The US doesn't use the HARM anymore. They have been steadily replaced since about 2010 But they do have them in storage and it's why they are giving them to Ukraine. It's part of the reason why you have such a high harm failure rate in game as you are using mid 1990s to 2000 Era missile against 2020 Russian Air defenses The USAF uses AGM-88E AARGM. Which is a HARM motor and frame updated with dramatically newer electronic and an Infared and Radar terminal homing function with image recognition in case radars turn off. The US is also as of earlier this year using the AGM-88G AARGM-ER which is the seeker and electronics from the previous missile with a new ram jet sustainer and a new frame to allow it to fit in the F-35 and double its top possible speed to over mach 4 (from about mach 2) and increase it's max range to well over 100 miles.
@lenn55
@lenn55 2 жыл бұрын
DCS has SAMs like the S300/400 shooting down a HARM which has never happened in combat. They aren't designed to shoot down a Mach 2 class rocket the size and flight profile of a HARM. DCS probably does it to make the game more "fair" and so the HARM doesn't kill all the SAMs making things to easy on the attackers.
@imjashingyou3461
@imjashingyou3461 2 жыл бұрын
@@lenn55 I think that statement is a bit much. I do think the S300 and 400 chances of themselves shooting down are not that high but possible. The SA-15s they should have with each battery are for that role. I do think that Russias radar tech, personel, and detection to kill process are not as good as this game depicts. Either way the AGM-88E solves many issues they have, in that the seeker is much better at detecting and geolocating the emitter, and the final guidance has other sensors to physically search for the emitter if its off or guide to a more precise hit. The AGM-88G should enable platforms such as the F-16 to fire outside of the S-400 effective engagement distance of probably around 150 miles or less. While allowing the F-35 to get inside of that ring to less then 100 miles to ensure a above Mach 2 impact speed and make it incredibly hard to intercept. There is one more issue people constantly forget Eagle Dynamics is a Russian Developer and a consistent theme I've seen in games like war thunder (Gaijin is a Russian developer,), and especially World of Warships (Wargamming is primarily Russian developer that is still run by mostly Russian and developed primarily in the St Petersburg office.) Russian equipment is often god tier for no real reason and will have things like no spall enabled for Russian tanks deep in the game code in Warthunder. In WoW it was laughably so as they had to ban more then 1 Russian cruiser from appearing in tournaments as it was so game breaking. It got laughable when Wargaming put out a Naval Legends documentary series that covered famous ships. Except for one of them they covered instead the Sovietsky Soyuz which was a WWII era never completed battleship with major design flaws in hindsight (it had the designed displacement of the Yamato, but less firepower, armor effectiveness, and speed then the Iowa's at 2/3rds the weight) then the I as well as the Russians didn't have the capability to various components to spec, most notably the armor which would have been 40 to 60% weaker then the British equivalent thickness. In the video they compare its fighting prowess, and historical importance to the USS Enterprise and HMS Warspite indirectly, and say it would have been the greatest battleship ever built with its mediocre speed and firepower, and poor armor, lack of radar, bad fire control, and poor AA suite, because it would have topped 70,000 tons. They really drink the propaganda cool aid in that one. All the major issues including Russia's inability to manufacture armor over 200mm thick and its poor metallurgy, and heat treatment are not covered. Now Eagle Dynamics might not be making the Russian equipment broken, but it sure as shit seems like its a cultural thing over there to compensate in media for the perceived technology difference with the west, as well as a cultural bias to believe the totalitarian states propaganda numbers on performance over real world examples.

In reality, Russian airdefense can't shoot down HIMARS or other missiles that strike well into Crimea. Moskva had only one operational turret and barely working engines. It's, of course, as broke and useless as the rest of the Russian war machine. Just look at their Flagship, their one and only Aircraft carrier. It's barely able to leave port before catching on fire which regularly kills its crewmen. Look how its only actual combat assignment in Syria went. They immediately lost 2 planes to faulty arresting wires, and immediately after had to transfer all aircraft to a nearby syrian air base, completely defeating the purpose of even having a carrier. I saw the battles here between American carrier group vs 'Russian ones, and it's pure bullshit. DCS is just completely unrealistic for Russian capabilites.

Ukraine has received unspecified "spare parts" for their MIG-29 fleets from Poland and Slovenia. If someone removed the engines, and shipped them separately from the airframe, one would have plausible deniability for providing "parts only, not aircraft". The number of Ukrainian Mig-29 has increased by 20 since the start of the war according to sources. As you touched upon in the video, these MIG-29s have been upgraded with NATO buses, and can fire NATO missiles, including the AGM-88 HARM. The HARM could either be targeted using the onboard seeker, OR, depending on version, be fed GPS data from some source capable of detecting radar from a long range, say one of those RC-135s or Global Hawks that are continuously flying racetracks along the Ukrainian border and in the Black Sea. Moving something like the S-400 takes a lot of time, and the Russians have probably not been to worried about Ukrainian SEAD to bother, meaning it could very well be a GPS based strike...Its not like the russians have shown supreme tactical provess in other parts of this campaign....The Moskva sailing around with shutdown radars come to mind....

DCS needs to change the S300/400 parameters. They have never shot down a HARM or similar class weapon in combat situations. They aren't designed for that. That is why these SAM systems are usually teamed with short range SAM systems that have a better chance at hitting small targets although even those have never shot down a Mach 2 HARM. Correct, never underestimate the human factor. Russian soldiers have proven to have very low morale and training in this conflict. Leaving material behind without destroying it, general lack of coordination and tactical provess etc. Remember the Moskva was sailing around with its AAA system switched off, probably either due to incompetence or fear of hitting their own aircraft. When the subject of HARMs came up there was a snort of disdain from several of them. "A waste of money and wing stations" was the general consensus. One of them was a veteran of the Bosnian action. He said the Serbs had 40 some SAM sites, mostly older SA-3s and 6s. He said the AF shot over 450 HARMs at them and not one scored a hit. Can you point me to that podcast (Name and where it is). Serbs used radar emission imitators and new tactics to avoid HARMS. They would switch a search radar on, find a target, fire a missile at it's predicted intercept, turn a search radar off, move a targeting radar in position, wait for a pre calculated time before impact, turn a targeting radar on for final corrections (pilot would have only a few seconds to react), turn it off, turn on a radar emission imitator and turn them off after a few seconds. This would make a HARM go for the radar emission imitator but it wouldn't have enough time to get it's exact position and it would just fall between a radar and it's imitator.

It's that way in most games pertaining to Russian weapon systems - SAM's and everything else included, because what can a game go off of other than what Russia claims.... and what Russia claims holds no weight anymore. Their "most powerful" weapons have proven to be overstated junk. Edit; something also worth noting, is that in no case have we seen any S-400 sites set up this well defended. The best we've seen were Russian photos from Crime with 2 S-400's next to each other, and only one Pantser, and that was one setup Russia was relying on to defend Crimea... so the amount of defenses in this video, I'm extremely doubtful of.

Get the standalone version. There's no difference between the versions, but the in built auto update works perfectly well, is easy to manage, and drops the then needless complication of adding Steam to the mix. You don't miss out on special offers (of which there are many from Eagle Dynamics, as well as 'miles' which you accrue with purchases, and can use to get discount on your next buy) and you just buy directly from their site. Sometimes, modules are released, or patches are released slightly later on Steam as well, and if you're running the Open Beta version (which is, IMHO, the best option because you get all the lates fixes as they come out) then, again, the ED version is best. I have a lot of games on Steam, I've got no issue with it, but there really is no need to use it in this case. My 2c...

There's a photo floating around of a Ukrainian MiG-29 with an AGM-88 attached. The photo popped up around the same time Russia released the photo of the remnants of the alleged HARM. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if we've upgraded Ukrainian aircraft to use NATO weapons. In fact, that's the most reasonable thing too suspect; since this war doesn't look like it's gonna end any time soon, and inevitably, all we can continuously supply is our own NATO weapons. It only makes sense to adapt their aircraft for NATO missiles. Edit: On the same note; I'll add that I'd expect to see AIM-7's and older AIM-9's like L's and M's being fit to Ukrainian fighters in the near future, definitely AGM-65's and other, older air to ground weapons; and likely in the next few years, Ukraine will probably start flying some F-16's.

If you want a loose feeling for heli flying with the TM warthog, try getting a stick extension long enough so that the base is on the ground. Good job. Sierra Hotel. I actually think the Russian SAM's in DCS perform better than the real world systems. A GMLRS rocket flying in a ballistic trajectory should be an easier target than HARM and have similar velocities and yet the Russians are struggling to splash them. Yes-GMRLS is a fast pop-up target...and so is AGM-88 if you carry out a pop-up launch like the Reapers. Pantsir definitely seems over-rated. Real world performance seems somewhat mediocre in comparison.

This technique seems to be the common strategy used in so many scenarios, not only on this channel, but also in other wargames. Modern-ish and advanced AA systems are good enough that the way to beat them is to throw enough shit at the wall until something sticks. I wonder how realistic this is. I wonder if it is economically viable, especially if some planes are lost during the mission. The sinking of the Moskva is an obvious exception regardless of the proposed possibilities for the failure. It couldn't defend against 2 low flying anti-ship missiles. I wonder how many missiles it took to strike Nefedorovka airfield recently. Or, more precisely, I wonder how many were fired vs. how many were defended vs. how many hit on target.
