Just a shoutout to other 'old' interns from a current nearing 40s intern : There is no problem and nothing shameful about being a 30s/ 40s/ 50s whatever age intern. The fact that the company took you in, and kept you around means that you still have value. And if you're doing a compulsory intern, GREAT! You're back in a position to learn, make mistakes, and still get credit units for your course too! I'm proud of you!

my cousin is studying accounting in suss, she got an internship opportunity from the Big 4. so i think it’s changing but there still still time before everyone changes. im still in diploma/mass communication and seniors above us study degrees in mass communication w SIM and got to work for MNCs as well.

STEM peeps can start off at a higher basic, it may not be fair among most business degrees. A fresh IT grad in an SME might start off higher than say a small finance firm back office role.

All the panelists from non-stem courses. I would think that having a varied mix of degrees, e.g. some STEM, some non-stem, some diploma holders, would make for a more fruitful discussion! As much as they say uni doesn't matter - truth is that for some jobs, it does. It's very difficult to study electromagnetics, advanced circuit theory, finite state analysis, on your own without weekly tutorials, office hours and labs to reinforce the concepts. And for the jobs that need them, e.g. circuit validation engineer, analog designer, RF engineers, where pay is upwards of 6k pm in companies like AMD, Nvidia, Xilinx and DSTA, you definitely need those fundamentals. What about software engineers you say - can't they just learn some react and html and start applying? No. The market is super saturated at entry level nowadays and resumes without degrees mostly get thrown into the reject pile simply bc there's so many applicants to choose from, why bother with those that have no degrees unless they've demonstrated their worth elsewhere?

Write down your own reasons for going to the course you chose and put it in a time capsule to be opened only after a year of working after graduation. Don’t show to others or compare with others.

I like to think in this way that perfectly describes society (no matter where you are) : 1) those who want more money = more qualifications thus more responsibilities/tasks (in general ofc. There are people who are already lucky to be rich from their siblings/parents, and there are those who are smart driven meaning they know how to get money the shortest way possible). 2) People who want a simple life = whatever amount of qualification that suffices which are not responsibility/task demanding. Their minds are not about getting high status but good enough quality of life. -- I'd be lying if I said degrees don't give you the best options in life, but I'd be lying as well if I said the best kind of life must be with a degree. I used to hate science and math back in school which I failed in the 0 level exams but years later, after experiencing the outside world with all of its highs and downs, I started to appreciate these two important subjects more in life. So just because you failed at life, doesn't mean life failed you. And if you don't get a degree, don't be disappointed at yourself, no ones gonna praise you but no ones gonna laugh at you either. Be happy that you can learn. The whole purpose of knowledge is to learn them. Even if you're not a scientist or doctor, it would still be a joy to learn about the nature and wonders of this world. Even if you're not a mathematician or a engineer, it would still be a joy to learn about how the algorithms and systems that can exist in this world too. I hope more people are reminded of this. Let us be among those who encourage each other to learn and show them how learning can be joyful no matter where you are in life. Be the one to explain how math can make your life better, not those who only tell you where you would end up if you don't get a certain degree. That is all. Hope you enjoy reading!

yes worth it. for the sake of local uni, i went back to take a 3 year poly course then local uni (smu). it took me 7 years (more if include the gap years). by my 2nd year from grad im earning six figures. of course there is also a difference between which uni.. always pick smu/nus/ntu over any other uni.... of course there will be some outliers out there that could do better from others unis. but always go for the better prospect ya.

i went poly straight, but left halfway and went to work. eventually found out that degree is still important and it's a huge road block for many paths without it. then i went back to poly@@michelletang8476

Help! I am more confused about my uni application now. I can enter NTU engineering and media but my interest lies more in mass communication kind of thing. Then, I want to apply for SUSS marketing also but like it’s not the big 3 so idk if it will still be recognised 😭

I was from NUS and I think the school does matter to some degree in SG, and more so outside US. NUS had and still have a lot of industry programs that I felt was more impactful than any other course I ever took. I work in silicon valley and a lot of singaporeans here are here because of these programs at NUS. The marketing content 101 is the same in every school, the difference is your classmates and your lecturer. How driven, inquisitive, entrepreneurial your classmates are; how much industry knowledge your professors have to guide your career choice. I work in tech product marketing, people are hired not for their marketing degree but your industry domain knowledge even as a fresh grad, critical thinking skills, how you segment a market etc. That's not taught from a marketing textbook, you learn it from effective lecturers who really knows their stuff and course mates.

University graduates are dime and dozen, chances are if you were to throw some stones along Orchard road you'll hit some graduates. Think about what you want to do in life earlier ; I more or less chose my industry & rough career path before I made my choice to go poly -> university-> postgrad. Not all professions require a degree. Eg if you are someone who likes to fix things , it might be more lucrative path becoming a plumber, electrician or mechanic unless you are academically inclined . There are degrees that you can spend 4 years on and not find a job that you think pays you "fairly". The economic value is different for different qualifications. Personally if I was interested in business, I would apprentice under a boss to learn from practice & start my own. If I wanted to be a social worker, I would just go for a diploma. In any society , whatever trade you enter you have to strive hard be humble to learn from mentors and put in time to gain experience. If you get good in your trade of choice and you have strong passion, someone will pay good money for your service or product.

My wife does not have a degree. Her current salary is 8k per month with bonuses around 2.5 months. I myself also not a degree holder, just diploma. Salary around 5k plus. Do we need a degree? Maybe not. Are we happy in our current situation? We are not rich, far from it. But it's enough.
