I started watching KZbin at the beginning of the pandemic, and the first channel I subscribed to is a young, married couple. They’re together all the time, full time traveler and they shared that taking time off away from the camera a few days/couple days a week, going on date night, continuing individual hobbies, etc.,has kept them going all of these years. I’m glad you two are also taking time for yourselves and relationship!

I did the road trip that you guys are planning to do through Portugal twice and one tip is to experience every local place you go to and take your time as yes it's all the same country but Portugal has different cultures and scenery throughout the whole country. One of the difficulties you mentioned is finding and re-filling your water. Just an idea....have a temporary hose connected to a funnel which you can easily hook up to your water storage and to a hook on the van roof. This way when it rains (just before it starts to rain) you can hook it up and you can refill your water tank (rain water harvesting) it's not a complicated thing to try out

Been on two big overland trips on the Pan American Highway and driven the Eastern overland route in Africa from Egypt all the way down to Cape . Did it all on a Landcruiser and we occasionally camped in our rooftop tent and mostly stayed in hotels. You’d have to put a gun to my head to do van life lol In addition to all the chores of living in a van, it’s completely useless if you are trying to navigate it in Africa on unpaved roads and if you do that in the rainy season, you have to come back 3 months later to pull it out of the red African mud slush. It also adds several layers of things that can go wrong with addition of things and lastly, emptying that toilet cassette every couple of days doesn’t look fun at all lol You have a flip side to “ we can go anywhere “ in Europe. You can’t drive that thing inside cities with the congestion zones and camp far away from the city making getting to places hard. Other than saving on lodging by compromising to live inside the van and hotels cost way more than €100 in parts of EU and Schengen zone, it’s mostly a hassle to drive a van in Western Europe.
@thebuddymoon2 ай бұрын
So far, we have really enjoyed the freedom to move around, having our own bed, and a space to call home (especially after living in hotels for the past two years-not all hotels are clean and comfortable). But yes vanlife isn’t for everyone. Your trips sound great! We’ve always wanted to do a Cape to Cairo trip. We looked into it before purchasing our van but through our research, we saw that you had to pay something like 100% and sometimes 150% of the vehicle value for a Carnet de Passage at the border of certain countries. Did you have to do any of that on your overlanding Africa expedition?
@Abraracourix2 ай бұрын
@@thebuddymoon Western Europe is not very conducive to driving a van and much easier to navigate by trains and public transport and stay in hotels ( obviously they are expensive if you are on a budget) and you can maneuver easily around with trains, public transport and rental cars. Hotel cleanliness depends on what you want to pay and I was not really on a budget. Outside the US/Canada and Western Europe, you can get a nice room for $100-150/night or even less. So it depends on what you want to pay. The typical hotel room in the US and Canada these days is around $200-250/night in a decent hotel and compared to that, many countries are cheaper for the same room. Southern Africa is not cheap either and the chalets in national parks are pricy and you should know this already. Plus we have to pay the Western world tariff to enter national parks in all of Southern and Eastern Africa. As far carnet, yes, you do need a carnet in some countries and I did the Cairo to Cape route and you need a carnet for Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and we used ours in Malawi and Lesotho as well. Others issue TIP and I think these days Kenya and Ethiopia also issue TIP for a small fee. Unfortunately, the Cape overland route is not possible now with Sudan and Ethiopia shut out. I shipped to UK and then drove up to Nordkapp in Norway and then drove to Turkey to ship my car to Alexandria, Egypt to drive down to Cape. If I were doing it now, I would probably ship directly to Durban or Capetown and drive up to Kenya because that’s how far you can go now. The land border on both sides of Ethiopia is a no go now though you can still fly into Addis and see most of Ethiopia. Sudan is completely off limits now which is a shame and throws a monkey wrench in the works. Coming back to Carnet, it depends on the issuing authority in your country whether you need a cash deposit or not. Here in the US as well as Germany which issues Carnet for most of EU, you can buy an indemnity bond in lieu of the cash deposit. You pay a small percentage for every $1000 of your vehicle value in exchange for an indemnity bond and it’s non refundable but you pay only a fraction of what you would put up as cash deposit. Check and find out if the Carnet issuing agency in South Africa does the indemnity bond thing. But Carnet is unavoidable in some countries where it is mandatory. If you don’t want to do the Carnet, drive the Pan American route where you don’t need a carnet in any country. But the current vehicle you are driving has another unique problem… RHD. Many countries in Central and South America won’t issue a TIP for RHD vehicles. You need a LHD . I was going to ask why you bought your van in UK to drive around in Europe but I guess you already knew the issue once you crossed the Channel Tunnel lol. But if you are going to overland all around the world, DO NOT buy a RHD. Every country that drives on the left will let in a LHD on a Carnet or a TIP but several countries that drive on the right will categorically not issue a TIP or let you in on a Carnet if you have a RHD. So if you’re going to buy a 4WD to overland around the world, do not buy a RHD. You will be ok in most of the Cape route as only Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia drive on the right and almost every other country in Southern and Eastern Africa drive on the left but if you do the West/Central Africa route, there are countries that explicitly won’t let in a RHD. Also you need a really good 4WD is Africa with off road tires, winch and other recovery gear. A 2WD van is pretty useless in most of Africa and especially after it has rained lol You are never getting out of the red mud in Africa in a from wheel drive van. Even without the rains, driving on sandy and corrugated wash board tracks is not possible in a van even in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. You can still do the Cape route now but you won’t be able to go further north of Kenya until the border situation in Ethiopia and the whole situation in Sudan gets back to normal. But there are still about 17-20 countries you can drive to in Southern and Eastern Africa and even Central Africa like Angola and even Republic of Congo ( not DRC). Most of them don’t need a Carnet and will issue TIP. Your own country has a weird system where you need a mandatory carnet if you import your vehicle into Durban or any of the other ports but you don’t need a carnet if entering through any of the land borders. South Africa will issue a TIP if you come through land borders. We stayed in hotels all through Central and South America as well as Africa except occasional nights we stayed on the rooftop tent. Plus, if you don’t plan on living in your 4WD, you don’t have to carry a whole load of crap most people carry trying to live full time in their car. It’s a lot of unnecessary weight and needless contraptions and with a lighter 4WD , you can still go anywhere most people can’t go and rest in a nice bed and internal plumbing lol Sorry Dan, but I am not doing the emptying bio toilet and grey water tank and tiny 2 minute showers lol

I think I've got a brilliant idea. In the past, I said to you, "why don't you try the local cuisine," and you mentioned it was expensive to eat out all the time. Now, what if you go to the local restaurant where ever you are staying. Look at their menu in the window. Check out the dishes you fancy, look at the recipes on the internet, buy the ingrediants at carrefour and make it in the van. They way you are still eating local food and getting the feel of the local people. Great hack ya?
