KILLIN IT. Now to come back to this video in 10 years 👀

Doing final pixel composites on LED walls doesn't look real enough for several reasons (such brightness:dynamic range, pixel pitch, not augmenting the foreground with motivated pratcal lights, not matching color and black levels (OCS), most environments do not look realistic enough. A hybrid green screen with LED environment will look much better and be more flexible, yet most don't try it for some reason.

What’s an example of a high end production that has “unrealistic” looking backgrounds? Didn’t see an example in vid

it's mistake to say that virtual production is a tech bubble. Virtual production is merely an evolution of what has been done in the past from the use of matte painting and both blue green

No because there are so many applicable uses of virtue production that go far beyond film and TV production. Commercials, Business events, concert and event production, etc. After all, the Unreal Engine is a game engine that has expanded to other industries.

Completely agree! We were at Unreal Fest this year and it was so cool to see how many industries are using UE5. NASA was there showing how they're using UE5 to help plan out their upcoming moon mission haha! Thanks for watching.

I still can not Unterstand why you have less than 30k Subs XD

Great video. Not as objective as it could be (some more sources and less opinion would have helped), but I think you're fair in your assessment. One thing you're bang on regarding is the quality of the environments on all but the highest budget productions. It is VERY difficult to create photorealistic environments in a game engine that have to run at the required resolution and framerates. Unreal Engine's Lumen and Nanite help, but its pathtracer shows how far Lumen is away from being a true competitor for offline rendering (in some scenarios). RTX is one option, but that is still far from being optimised enough to be useful (and Epic have discontinued support for developing it). My prediction is, in about 10 years, you'll be able to get (near) pathtraced quality in realtime. The problem is, by then, all the LED volumes will likely to have become obsolete tech, which either require updating or being scraped entirely - most having probably never being used to help make a decent production.

Thank you for your comment! Agreed- environmental realism has to get over some big hurdles... but I think we'll all be surprised by how fast those improvements are made!

How many beanie babies does it cost to build an LED volume?
@BraidenWatling Жыл бұрын
By my estimation it's at least seven.

Great Video! Thanks for summing pros and cons up so nicely! Just to chip in with another take on the quest for "Final Pixels in Camera" Here is an example of an experimental scene: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ66ZKyjhcSMaLc The Scene was shot on a $1500 old-school rear-projection screen with two projectors (together approx 750 Watts), using Unreal and a Vive Tracker. "The Pathfinder" is the result of our latest ViZARTS Project workshop for filmmakers and techies at Aalborg University in Copenhagen, Denmark. - What do you think about the quality of our efforts? - What can be improved before our next workshop?

ILM and Marvel are beginning to abuse the Lo-Res Volume shots. Most people don't realize that the truly good looking stuff (Season 1 of Mando, for example) might use the volume in production, but it's all rotoscoped out and high res stuff is composited in during Post. The lighting from the Volume remains, however. But take a look at the trailer for Ahsoka and it is a massive Volume cringe fest. It looks like a cheap rap video, lol!!
