Wow. I'm from Australia and have never been provided with a plan in case of war. That really shocked me. But I just downloaded it to read and the Swedish doc looks excellent. We do have checklists and plans for people who live in bush fire areas. (Which is a lot of Australia) They are asked to prepare months in advance of our Summer. The idea of being told to never surrender really took my breath away.... 😢 Being prepared is the key, and I hope it's never required ❤ love to Sweden - what a brilliant country and people 🇸🇪

👋 Swedish native/Australian citizen here living in FNQ. Just to add to this, every cyclone season we receive information from our local government how to prepare for floods and cyclones, kind of the same. I think the biggest difference between our two countries are mainly geographical. In Sweden the threat is different to here, we here in Australia don’t border any totalitarian states that would pose a military threat. In a war or near war situation, I think Australia would have a bit more time to mobilise ADF. This and the fact that the personnel in ADF has it as their profession is probably the reason for us “normal” Aussies not receiving information about how to prepare if a conflict is imminent.

That part about "We will never surrender" is really comforting as a Swede. Even if they take over news papers or whatever we know that we wont surrender whatever the news says. It always reminds me of the Japanese fighter that was hidden in the forest for decades and they had to get his commander to tell him to stop fighting. That mentality helps you go trough life, its like a "Do what you need to to preserve who you are". Resistance fighters in Sweden goes deep.

I learned about the "Total Defense" strategy in school in the early 80s, around the time of the Whiskey On The Rocks incident. I especially remember the phrase of "never surrender". What stuck in my mind was our techer saying that "even if the king would go on the radio, and tell the people to surrender, it should be seen as a false order". It was such a strong statement.

Here in Denmark, we were told to have food and water for six days. Sweden and Finland is more on their toes, than many other countries. They have just joined NATO, before that, they had to manage it all by themselves (maybe). So being more active is in my view naturally. Buying some canned food and store it, isn't a big thing. So each year you can have a "dåse party", eating the cans, and storing some new ones. When I was in the army, some of the food was close to 10 years old. Tasted fine.

This way of think of defense and being prepared is ingrained in the Swedish psyche. When I was a child, I visited my grandparents. Both lived thru the first ww. There I found a very similar book. “Om kriget kommer” When I was 18 years old, I was drafted to then army. Ten months of basic training. Followed by a number of one mount repetitions at my station placement of war. This went on until I was 46 years old. Most men of my age have this experience. After this You would receive your war placement station. If you worked at a place that was important for the defense of the country you would be placed there. Women where also placed at a position important to the defense of the country. When I became 65. The country decided it did not need me anymore but I was still placed in the war organization because of my position in the local community. Most swedes who are I bit older, have been prepared all their lives. I hope you and your family also will find this country worth fighting for.

@vaikiАй бұрын
It’s a good thing that you bring this up, kind of shows the problem for “new swedes” to understand the content even if the brochure is written in their native language or the reason why. MSB kind of expect people to understand the Swedish idea of total defence. That total defence isn’t just the “green men and women” that would be on or near the frontline but EVERY person in Sweden (citizens AND non-citizens, boys and girls, men and women… well, any pronoun) from 16 years to 70 years of age are required to be part of the total defence. It might be, go to work as usual, volunteer at a hospital, drive buses or trains, take care of children and elderly, etc… keep the country running… while the military takes care of the “fighting”. We who grew up in Sweden during the Cold War, to us it’s normal Swedish behaviour facing a crisis or war. To people that newly have arrived to Sweden (i.e. after the Cold War “ended”) it may not be “normal”. Some people come from war zones, some people come from former totalitarian states or states formerly occupied by totalitarian states, and some come from states with military that has that as their profession. Sending out a brochure telling people to get ready can be a bit controversial… but, there has been a lot of information going out in media about the reason why this is being done in SVT and SR in multiple languages… so it’s not just the brochure. Now, what has happened to trigger this brochure being sent out? If I say “nothing”, I would lie… but as others have said, the brochure has been sent out all since WW2 and the information also used to be in the telephone catalogue that reached every household with a telephone. Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine, Sweden’s response to join NATO, foreign countries involvement in destabilising the Swedish society (the LVU campaign etc)… and now the actions done by Russia’s shadow fleet on the bottom of the Baltic Sea)… can possibly indicate that Sweden is already involved in a conflict… even if we don’t call it a war. Even for me, a native Swedish citizen living in Australia, I am part of the Swedish total defence. If Sweden was facing a crisis or war situation I’m not expected to travel back to Sweden but I am still expected to do my best to defend Sweden, if that makes sense?

This brochure is awesome. I've helped some friends learn short term resilience. It was kind of fun to make it a game to play with their kids. First we did it for a day, and the kids got the task to figure out for how many days this could continue without outside help. Then we did a weekend and the parents were tasked with figuring out how often they would need to rotate the supplies (you preferably want food that is not out of date). The kids were tasked to figure out what was missing (it is always candy and entertainment - and that is awesome). #1 thing people tend to miss is heating for food and comfort. #2 is probably assuming that they can always stay at home. Prior proper planing prevents (piss) poor performance.

It's fun to see people from other countries react to this brochure! To most of us who grew up here during the cold war and were conscripted for military service at age ~20, it is business as usual 😀. On a more serious note: It is no coincidence we have a large arms industry and a total defence agenda. We're simply too small of a population to defend this massive chunk of land if not everyone gets involved or if external supply is cut off. A country with hundreds of millions of citizens maybe can afford the luxury of choosing wether to participate or not on an individual level. We can't. Sure, now we're NATO members so some things might get a bit easier in the future. But we used stand alone as a non-aligned nation cramped between east and west and I think those memories will remain for quite some time. The idea was always to let a potential hostile nation know that they would face guerilla hell if they tried to invade a prepared population.

Similar brochures have been recently published in Latvia (where I lived for 5 years), Lithuania, Norway and Poland. I would not play this thing down, especially if you have been paying attention to geopolitics. As for your own country, Germany, your security services are predicting a major conflagration later this decade and there is a call from the gov. in Berlin for Germans to consider transforming basements into emergency shelters and to generally get ready. This is a very serious situation.

In Sweden with our safety nets we've felt that someone will take care of our needs and help us at once. One of the purposes with this brochure is to tell us that we need to prepare and think through different scenarios. We should all be prepared for at least one week without electricity and without possibility to buying food. Older generations remember when Sweden had huge storages with everything the population needed. They are no more .

As an American who pays a lot of attention to our own politics as well as some of the larger geo-political events, developments and trends, I strongly encourage you to not live in denial, tempting though it might be. Like it or not, there is strong and mounting evidence that your geographic neighbor Russia poses a grave threat to world. The US made a catastrophic mistake by reelecting a certain former President who openly and without shame admires and sucks up to the worst dictators in the world. There is a general belief, at least among many analysts in the senior US military and intelligence community, that Russia wants all of Ukraine; they will not be satisfied with keeping the Crimea and the Donbas region. The analysts further believe that It is only a matter of time until Russia attacks a NATO country, in an attempt to test how serious the alliance is regarding its claim: an attack on one is an attack on all. I encourage you to delve into the work of scholars on authoritarianism and so-called strongman dictators, such as Anne Applebaum, Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Timothy Snyder, and others. The fact is, the dictators of the world feel emboldened - in part because of the ascendancy of far-right so-called populism in many democratic nations around the world. The dictators are even teaming up and collaborating - witness North Korean soldiers fighting and dying on the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war. Do what that book recommends in terms of preparation.

Thank you for covering this. If you want an insight in the Swedish state of mind I can't think of anything written being more transparent than that brochure. For me as a Swede it was actually pretty heartwarming to read through it even if the subject is dark. Not only does it tell me to take care of myself and everyone around me down to my dog but also that there are other Swedes out there looking out for my safety. It also strenghten my sense of community and being a part of something bigger and remind me that I in fact love my country. That feels great! Also the "we will never surrender. All information pointing to the contrary is false." Is a very old thing that could be found in phone books back in the day. What this means in practice is that no authority can order Swedes to stand down in the event of a war. The idea is to make victory or the destruction of Sweden as an entity the only two possible outcomes. It's dark and honestly insane to a degree but at the same time... it feels right.

I live in the countryside so for me some parts are live right now. If the electricity is down, heat and water are gone, water pipes freeze in winter. As a basic (I assume you live in a city) you must have water: Always keep 10-20 L of drinking water and additional containers for at least 10 L per person in your household so that you can collect drinking water. It would also be good to have water to flush the toilet, so find a place where you can get water that is not completely clean like from a lake, river or stream that you can take in buckets. Warm room: Which room will lose temperature the slowest? Do you have a room without external walls? Could you make it possible to live and sleep there for a while, maybe as long as 1 week? Please at least think about it beforehand and you'll be much better off. It doesn't have to be a war, it could be a blackout of electricity or something like that.

I've seen other reactors, mainly British, review the brochure and say that they would like to see something similar distributed in the UK. People in general are woefully unprepared for any kind of disturbance to their daily lives. Our societies are vulnerable; a cyber attack on the payment systems would make it impossible to buy e.g. food. Imagine what it would be like after a few days... If you have food for three days, or better at least a week, combined with the means to store water, to cook food and heat your house/apartment, then you are less vulnerable.

Here in Germany, there is a brochure called “Ratgeber für Notfallvorsorge und richtiges Handeln in Notsituationen” (engl. „Guide for Emergency Preparedness and Correct Action in Emergency Situations“) from the BBK (Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe/Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance). This might be similar, but I don't think many people know about it. For example, the guide recommends stocking up on food and drink for 10 days. There are also tips on how to behave in emergency situations, but there is no mention of war.

Thanks for keeping us updated! Preparedness is something we don't see here in The Netherlands. People buy their groceries multiple times per week and I wonder if a large percentage of the local population would run out of food in a very short time if anything wrong ever happens. Having a good amount of essential items purchased in advance isn't only good as a safety net but it's also cheaper in the long run, if you buy what you need when on sale and you're locking present prices for future consumption. I am still using preserved mushrooms I bought for 55 cents that now are sold for about twice as much. Always check the expiration dates on what you buy and plan your purchases so you don't overbuy as well, even if there's a bit of flexibility with some of those dates, specially in a situation of disaster. I would personally lose a massive percentage of my stocked food because it's frozen, in case we have continuous power shortages. But... With our weather and the way some of our houses and apartments are designed we might be forced to leave as we'd also not have running water, probably, even though temperatures aren't as nearly as cold as the ones supported in Sweden (it doesn't get below freezing too often or for too long, depending on the winter). I also don't know if I'd stay here, being native from Brazil, but if there's such terrible war I wonder if diplomatic services would be willing to rescue citizens that chose to abandon their own countries. I regret having a tiny car because I can't carry my stuff to Portugal (my other citizenship) if necessary. Thankfully you have Finland as a buffer. I felt like visiting Sweden to check for houses to buy in the south (maybe even check with you if you could help me with that, for a fee, of course) but if I decide to move over there it seems the middle of the country might be safer. I overheard some Dutch natives commenting the government expressed we need to prepare, somehow, but in a more loose manner. Nothing official, no letter. I have a feeling natives have some sort of "common sense" that as an immigrant I am unaware of (most of it), like their children learn how to swim and it was funny that I went to a pharmacy looking for iodide as a supplement and they recognized it as a product sold to have in your pantry in case the country suffers a nuclear attack/disaster. It made me pause thinking about it for a few days, but we were too concerned about COVID that I admit moving forward shortly afterwards without a second thought. Like you say, if things to bad in Sweden, most of the EU will likely be in bad shape. I personally believe there's a higher likelihood that your family runs to you if they choose to seek safety instead of fighting, not the other way around. But they might stay to fight, of course. I might also choose the same, even though I am not a citizen, I was accepted here and I'd be willing to make a certain level of sacrifice, depending on the circumstances (I have no children, though). Stay strong. Enjoy life. Buy some extra food. Find a way to have some water stored (this is the hardest, in my opinion, since it takes so much space etc). Just don't overdo it and focus on things the government will likely not provide, like toilet paper, meat, anything else that's not extremely basic and more likely to be given by government programs. Not saying they might want to force people to work for those supplies, but they'll surely hunt us down if we stocked up and we hide from them. At least in The Netherlands we're all registered with our "proper" residential addresses, so they can come knocking if they want to recruit people. A potential enemy can also use that information as well. I believe we're already in a war. But a discreet one that's happening in plain sight and we're not seeing just yet. Hopefully the entire situation is de escalated and we can have another few decades of peace. 🙏🏻 Meanwhile, I wish you and your family a great 2025! 🎆🥂

This brochure is a good thing to get and should be taken seriously, you never know what is going to happen in the future. I am lucky to live up north with still quite severe winter 5 months/year, also in a tiny tiny village with a long way to stores etc. Earlier we often had no electricity for 2-3 times in winter due to snowstorms and that has given all of us experience how to manage for a while. We have our own (village) water well and we live beside a river with good water. I grow veggies in my garden, supplying us two for 1 year and we grow a lot of potatoes togehter with the other villagers. My hubby hunt, we fish in the river and foraging for berries, mushrooms and greens benefitting nutrition and health in summertime. We have 4 freezers filled with food and also a big pantry and a cupboard with dried goods + a cople of root cellars in the village. All inhabitants in our village has the knowledge of this and also baking and cooking on open fire. All of us also have two posibilitys to warm up our houses For hygiene we have the river and can also quickly set up a common sauna and couple of outhouses in the village. 3 hunters in the village, probably 2 going to civil defense also I and one of my daughters can manage a rifle but with a farm we can get both meat and milk if we help out with the animals. Two of us are caretaker and nurse with some knowledge in health, we all have big houses, being able to take in family living in town or other refugees needing shelter. There is 2 teachers living here, being able to take care of the children while the rest of us work. With the war in Ukraine we have become even more prepared. It is a little scary sometimes...war, climate change...worrying for the young ones. But I know I still have it much better than people living in towns. As a friend down south once said in our group chat with other friends; "If there´s gonna be a big crisis I think NN and NN will manage best of us". But you can still do a lot of things living in town, it it just a change of mind.

This brochure If Crisis or War Comes, is a great tool. Because then the Swedish people know what is going on and what they should do, after reading this brochure. You said that you have not seen anything like it in either Great Britain or Germany, then think how people will act in either of these countries if the crisis or war were to come to them. Because they do not know at all what to do and then it is easy for panic and chaos to occur. So in my opinion it is idiotic that other countries have not published similar brochures, so people in each country know what is going on. I myself know that if there is a crisis or war, then I will put on the military uniform and become a home guard soldier. And I know exactly what to do.

Hmm.. seems like that brochure gave you a very healthy reality check. 🧐 This Swedish "mindset" is probably also part of why Swedish support for Ukraine is at the very top internationally.. not only amongst politicians, but amongst people in general. Unlike some other countries, it would pretty much be political suicide to not support Ukraine in Swedish politics. If you look into it, you'll find that apart from the support from the Swedish government, there are rather massive non-governmental efforts going on in Sweden to support Ukraine.. Things remind us a lot of the 1939 Winter War against Finland, when they were attacked by the Soviet Union..🤔🧐

I think the brochure should be renamed, this from "If Crisis or War Comes" to "When Crisis or War Comes" since even if there wont be a war some new crisis will at the minimum happen. We should all count on that being the case!

I think there is a huge difference between the words "If" and "When". "If" is a reminder to and "When" is a more offensive and threatening word. All of us have not the same mind, children and young people that was not born during the cold war + immigrants, already with bad experience from catastrophys and war may get seriously ill if feeling scared and threatened. But what do I know...I am only a "word nerd"...
@PeterRobertsson26 күн бұрын
@@Passioakka I fully understand what you mean but even if war isnt coming there have been and will be different types of crisis and it is better to call a spade a spade and then for the adults, parents, teachers etc to explain the nyanses to the children and young ones. The fact that we all are in trouble now is precisely because everyone for the last 30 years stuck their heads into the sand and thought that we were moving into the ever lasting peace. This has created two generations who are "peace damaged" and cannot see realities until it hits them in the face and then it is too late. Politicians have also been able to "hide" behind the notion that there will never be a crisis or war again as using the national budget for defence in peace time isnt popular etc. It should for sure in my opinon be lable "When" as it is just a matter of time "when" a crisis (and hopefully not war if we prepare us correctly now so we together can deter) will happen again. Thats all - better to understand and be safe rather than sorry! Cheers!

It is not to be confused with some patriotic maga type nonsense. This is simply a "what if" kind of tip book. Having some water, canned goods, cash, batteries etc at the ready in your home is never a bad idea. But the main use for these light prepper stowaway things might not be war, but rather power outages during storms etc..

Sweden, Norway, and Finland have recently updated versions of our respective booklets, updated civil defense bunkers, and are getting fully back to the readiness we had under the cold war. I surprised myself when the bomb shelter signs reappeared after being home for a long time. The situation in the World both with regard to climate, and political crisis brings us back to, and beyond the dangers we constantly faced during the cold war. Emergency drills, and so forth. The requirements/and recommendations be prepared for 5-7 days with emergency supplies went out in Norway, and Finland too. All three countries have the same total war doctrine with the entire population being prepared, and mobilised. Still not all do think it is needed but unfortunately I think with an aggressive Russia, and a collectively insane US we better prepare in Europe for hard times to come. It is strange to me that the rest of the NATO members are not preparing. Better to be ready, than not.

Got stranded on a cliff outside sweden´s naval base in Karlskrona. Breznev in USSR thretened they would come and get it themselfe. Ronald Reagan in USA sent NATO to support Sweden. While the negotietioned was going on how to solve the situation, peacefully. Sweden´s position was that they would´nt let the russian navy come and do whatever they wanted on swedish territory. That led to Reagan got envolved in the negotionetions between russia and sweden. It enden peacefully. But it was very close it didn´t. If someone had done something really stupid (a politruk). This kind of instructions and advice has been around since WWII or even longer. Compared to the Cold War, today Sweden is a member of both the EU and NATO. Within the EU and its Lisbon Treaty there is a mutual defence clause (Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union) which oblige all Member States to come to each other's assistance if one or more EU MS are being attacked, similarly to NATO's Art 5. The EU has also adopted several new Directives dealing with cyberthreats and resiliens throughout the EU which obliges all MS to adopt legislation, strategies on how to implement those with heavy sanctions if you dont. Also under NATO Art 3 the civil defense is part of the resiliense, deterrence and requirements to support NATO operations in respective NATO MS. As part of that an agreement between NATO MS was made during the NATO Summit in Warsaw 2016 that all NATO MS are obliged to implement certain requirements to support NATO deterrence and NATO military operations. These are called Seven Baseline Requirements. Sweden's work on its Total Defence strategies and concepts is of great interest for NATO and other NATO MS to learn from and adopt similar measures in their respective country.

Total defence as a concept includes all vital services in sociaty, so it could be people working in the energy sector, IT, healthcare(obviously), transportation, water, waste managment etc etc... if these things(and more) start to fail you soon have "chaos", and it will be harder to defend the country, and peoples moral and will to put up a restistance might also take a hit. The opponent in a full scale war(like what we see in Ukraine) will try to break the back of the people, so he will target e.g the energy sector, because without energy, life quickly becomes a lot more complicated and burdensome.

You say that the first words in the brochure are quite ‘patriotic bug not in a bad way’. I think that is your German voice speaking as a result of Germany’s past. I can understand that totally and experienced is over the decades as I live near the German border in the Netherlands. You as a German really can feel and express this too! It is the way this has developed after the WW2. But I think that being patriotic is a good way to defend your values and democracy, just as the words stated in the brochure. Take for example France with its way of defending their values, culture, language etc. and we can take a lesson from this. We just are nations with values and that is to be defended. As there is a war going on in our east European border we have to be cautious at any time. I think we cannot totally rely on the government completely so we must do our part aswell. Now I can understand my grandmother back in the 80s why her caller was full of canned products. It is just the way of being prepared. My former prime minister mark Rutte is now the general of NATO, he also warned us and to take measures. Starting by assembling emergency kit.

As a Swede growing up during the cold war, when we where close to war against soviet I kind of got in the breast milk who is the enemy. We have a somewhat unique and strange relations to Russia. It's a bit schizophrenic. I can't explain it no other way. All we ever wanted was Russia to become one of us, but those hopes that we nurtured have gone up in smokes. Now it's back to truly bad again, and with every action Russia is going further away from ever getting back on track with that. I see it as nearly impossible now. What could have been...i dont think I even ask myself that question anymore.

It comes down to the doctrine of total defense. Finland has the same (and better) concept. Everyone 16-70 years old (even foreigners) living in Sweden is part of the total defense. If you want peace, prepare for war. Why does Sweden have a doctrine of total defense 1 Modern war attacks every part of society 2 Sweden has a small population and a big area. The problem with the doctrine is when to turn society into total defense. It will be at an extreme cost, and Sweden didn't even do it in WWII. The brochure is a part of the doctrine of total defense.

Excuse me, but isn’t the timing just perfect for justifying larger military budgets after NATO membership was shoved down our throats. The militarists have been scaring Americans for decades to justify outrageous and ever increasing military and surveillance state budgets that benefit a few, while pushing austerity measures, inflation and less privacy for the rest of their country. I moved to Sweden in 1986 and I see Sweden making similar mistakes that play into the hands of dangerous people inside of Sweden . The government is not your friend any longer. Russia doesn’t want Sweden . That is ridiculous . They want a neutral Ukraine so an ever expanding NATO isn’t at their doorstep. That is all! The rest is propaganda to enrich a relatively few zealots who insist on provoking WWIII with China, Russia and Iran. Wake up people and demand a negotiated peace instead of beating the war drums in an age where everybody loses if escalation continues. This is a sinister campaign that provokes fear at home and abroad. Demand a negotiated peace now, or suffer the horrible consequences of widespread war, carefully engineered as always by the ruling class. No preparedness will save Sweden from modern day weapons and technology if Russia is attacked further by NATO proxy, Ukraine, with NATO weaponry and Russia decides to retaliate/escalate on NATO territory. Sweden’s NATO membership has only made it a target if further provocation by NATO and Israel in the Middle East continues. Personally, I hope NATO and the Zionist project are dismantled. Unfortunately , Western propaganda stirring up widespread Russophobia has been rather successful. A referendum vote on NATO membership would have been democratic and revealed Sweden’s true feelings about surrendering it’s long standing tradition of neutrality. Happy New Year! 🥳
