I have had my LeMond Zurich with Shimano Ultegra since 1999. I ride it almost every day. I've never washed the chain, and I've oiled it maybe 10 times since '99. The bike runs just fine. Food for thought.

@@jarozita2715 I had a mountain bike with 9 speed SRAM that I also neglected. 10 years riding without any maintenance and it functioned ok too. If you let newer chains go over 0.5 then the whole groupset is ruined. Older stuff that isn't being put under much pressure can be ridden for ages but when you do need a new chain you're changing everything else too.

@@Hornet135 0.5 wear as measured with a chain wear checker. Go over 0.5 with 11 or 12 speed and you'll likely need to replace the cassette when you replace the chain. If you get to 1.0 wear you'll need new chain rings too, not good if you have an integrated power meter.

I always waxed my chain, not just for lower friction, but greatly increased chain/sprocket life. I do have 2-3 spare for each chain type, so no need to wait for the whole process

@@200Carl nowhere near as bad at all. It gets dirty, but not oily caked mess dirty, if that makes any sense ? I use it on my gravel bike and it takes a good solid 2 weeks of every day rides before I notice it’s “dirty”, and even then it looks like an oil lubed chain after 3-4 days of road ridding . And a simply wipe down after a ride with just a rag gets most of the dirt off since it doesnt cake up like it does with oil. I went back to oil when silca announced their new super duper lube and man… it was so much dirtier. I’m back to wax . I kept the oil line for my old bike that lives on the trainer in my garage … perfect for that

rewaxing every 200 miles? that is once a week... even if the drivetrain lasts longer (which is about to be proved) the costs for the wax + the working time will outnumber the savings.

Not having to deal with grease, and the dirt that stick to grease, is the real benefit. It saves time, and makes you want to clean your bike more often.

The whole drivetrain lasts longer. So chains, cassettes, and chain rings, all last longer. That kind of saving adds up. Once you've done the initial clean, you simply re-submerge the chain (you don't need to deep clean it every time) Even with standard dry lube the weekly cleaning is significantly more than for wax. (Used to take me 40mins to an hour to degrease and clean a bike, now it's about 30mins)

If you live in an area where rain might fall at any time during the year, waxing is not gonna help much. If you ride for more than 10-20 minutes in the rain with a waxed chain, you must immediately remove it from your bike afterwards, and do a rewaxing. Otherwise it will begin to rust. So for wet countries, I'd say it's better to stick to traditional chain lube (in winter as well).

Haven't had that issue here in the Netherlands. I just use a water wax suspension every few weeks depending on use. Just grab a rag with wd40 to clean the worst and apply the waxy stuff after

@@Mike0 does not matter. The obnoxious unsettling grinding noise you may get while riding in the rain is not coming from inside the rollers (if properly waxed). If you pour oil on the chain is will lessen the noise but also trap grit inside your rollers and destroy them - so a bad idea anyway. Also you get no rust while riding. Only afterwards if you do not wipe the chain down/dry it.

The thing is, just which kind of miles. Riding in the wet with dry lube and you need to reapply after every single ride. Use wet lube and it will attract dirt like nothing. If wax can withstand bad weather then it might be worth it to have a chain for that kind of condition, and another chain for dry condition, because no one wants a squeaky chain

I waxed my last chain and it was a mess. Sometimes I had to reapply it every 100 km to get rid of the squeaky noise. Also my chain was long over dead after almost 2000km. It was cleaner yes, but more maintenance and I used almost a complete bottle of wax for one chain, which basically makes riding my bike 3 times as expensive when it comes to maintaining the drive train.

I found a product called chain butter all weather that acts like a wax but is easier to apply and can last for literally thousands of miles without reapplication. So much better than waxing the chain.

It definitely makes you go faster, first time I applied it I was maxing out my gears a lot sooner. Though it doesn't last very long. I found that cycling everyday 13 km after 4 days I could feel the difference

So if you wax the chain to your bike why don't you wax the gears I understand taking the gear system off the bike would be hard but in a professional-level if you could add a coat of wax and it will just give you a slight advantage on shifting and going through the motions a little easier wouldn't that be worth it.
