Speaking from Australia, the issue is most people are doing great, about 70% of the population. It's the bottom 30% who are basically trapped in an economic disaster where they will never emerge from. There is a mass immigration program that has been running over 20 years and there is simply no housing left. Land prices double about every 18 months in my area for the last 5 years. The culture is all about making money and exploiting others in society. You are not allowed to do any work yourself around home, you have to hire a qualified tradesman that charges $2000 a day or more. Further, the police and courts are totally corrupt - something people from abroad never think about here. No one has any morals - making money is seen as the only virtue. The wealthy middle class (literally all millionaires) control the political system, as they are the majority. If you want to start a business, you need to be a programmer and do it online, as the price of leasing premises has exploded, and if you can afford to buy somewhere, then you are already a millionaire don't need a business to begin with. It's a landlord and slave culture that has no prospect of improving.

I would argue that the route of "be a programmer and do it online" is getting pretty crowded. Thats what I did in 2008-2014 and then it was doable. Maybe 1/100 was doing that 2008 and market was growing exponentially every year. Now the growth has stopped and probably 25/100 are there competing for the same money as you.

No matter how bad or troublesome things seem to look right now, every clouds has a silver lining. Hard times, will create tougher people, boost creativity and ways to deal with the situation. Giving people a challenge will also build character and resilience. Things over time will at the end gets better. Gradually but steadily. There's no such thing of course as an utopia, but things will over time get better again. The prospects will get better.

I have a similar story, where in did digital nomad very early, then lived in southern california 10 years. As that place fell I went back to some digital nomad lifestyle and been doing so for 3 years now. It gets hard after a few years for me with no roots anywhere. I been doing mostly caribbean and Italy/France. Went to check out Serbia and eastern europe this summer but felt the same darkness there as you describe. I really like Italy/France but winter weather isnt healthy. Im considering doing winter in Morocco as its slightly better, alternatively move to argentina. Really, I just want to be in a place where people dont have the mentality that we are in the end times. I hear Africa has happier places but still no one moves there. It isnt easy

Yeah, South East Asia is the one I chose but if you can find a place in Africa which worksthat would be great. For me I want gringo convenience as well as well as safety, unfortunately South Africa just isn't safe at this point.

The answer for the question at the end: Yes, there ís a future for the Western World. One way or another, but it will not go or happen on it's own of course. But then again, Western society is very resilient, adaptive and so far still based on original, powerful principles: Power and the vote for the People. Freedom of expression. Wealth generation and meritocratic-based distribution of that, just to name some.

1. When it comes to Serbia the truth is always between corrupt foreign invasions, internal corrupt one party strongmanship, and mercurially erratic temperament going alongside Jewish-like sense of noblesse and moral/historical superiority. "Middle" in Serbia rarely appears, but the existence of that appearance gives hope that if we're not completely biologically mauled/wiped out we might build our own moderate state - pun intended. 2. West, or any other place: with further economic decline culture would be in a more steeper decline, to the degree of vanishing interpersonal fairness, justifiably augmented mistrust not only towards your government but towards any stranger everywhere - neoliberal wild west translated to the countries of origin. When under economic and thus political pressure internal cohesion of the country is disrupted, complete decline of western institutions, which is undergoing for some time, would mark west's end. On another hand economical rising of the new block, i.e. of the rest of the world that politically essentially hadn't changed for millenniums, would under some kind of global coexisting pact of sovereignists for peace lead into controlled liberalization of their societies. Fascist rise in the west as a child of capitalism in crisis and hopefully gradual "softening up" of the rest of the planet. 500 years was quite enough for a "headstart", now it's others' turn.

Russia has more long-term benefits than any Western country. There are several types of Russians and one high profile type is the deluded self-deprecating one. That means they think Russia is the worst country on the planet where they live under a dictatorship, no personal freedoms, can't build a business etc. But what it noticeable about this type is they they never try. They never try building a life for themselves, a life which Russia does offer and is affordable (if you work hard). Instead they point fingers portraying Russia in a bad light when in fact it's not Russia which is the problem...
