@josephj1234567 Жыл бұрын
@@askher229 Definitely! So they have these recordings called 'Cohorts,' and they also host live ones, but you have to wait a couple weeks for those, and that doesn't help speed things up. So on my way to work and while at work, I would listen to all the available ones the class had saved once or twice, and then when I got home from work, I would spend about 2-3 hours doing some more studying. Also, about 5-7 hours total over the weekend. I stayed consistent with this for about 5 months straight, with a couple weekends off if I had things going on. I would also start with the pre-assessment first to see what information I already know so I can better determine what to focus on studying and manage my time better. If I feel like I did good enough on the pre-assessment, I would do the actual assessment no more than 24 hours later since I'm flooding my brain with all this new information. For the papers, I immediately started reading the rubric to see what is a 'go and no go' to see what I have to do. If you can set a goal to do 1 class a week, then you'll be set. I aimed for 2 classes a week, and that's how I got it done quicker. I'm starting my master's in two weeks at WGU for my MBA, so I can provide insight on that once I'm done in a couple months since it's only 11 classes compared to 40 classes.

@lifebyjustin2 жыл бұрын
@Shane Hummus No problem at all, happy to share. Well I can comment on my approach, which could be a fusion of perseverance and luck. Initially, there was pushback from the enrolment counsellors while attempting to apply. I explained how I knew of Canadians who completed WGU programs in the past and that I was connected with half a dozen on LinkedIn (so I knew it was a possible to be a student from another country). I explained that I had a background as an online learning student in the past and was confident with the teaching and learning approach. I minimized concern around timezones (for mentor and instructor calls) by explaining that I was in the zone as Utah. I was told “maybe but we’ll get back to you”. I followed up about three times via phone and email but with more “maybe, we’re asking management” from their end. I think at one point I was able to talk directly to management who eventually cleared me. On my application, I wasn’t able to put my official Canadian postal code and in turn was unable to move forward in the process, which many international applicants deal with and reach out to me about. I entered 00000 as a zip code and asked my mentor to adjust it once in the program.

I do my classes on the weekdays for 8 hours a day then I take time offs on the weekends. Being a good test taker will definitely be a big help. The pre assessment and the actual assessment (the exam you have to take the pass the class) are not always similar so you have to make sure you still study everything. The exam questions make sure that you understand the materials as they can be tricky sometimes. The pass/fail on the transcript can be a hurdle for some government jobs as they require an actual GPA number on the transcript (even though our pass is equivalent to 3.0 gpa)

I just wanted to come back to say thanks, and if someone is reading the comments in the future. I am a real working adult who just went back to school in WGU. I started researching a couple of weeks before Halloween after talking for weeks with my previous community college. They came back and said I needed 7 classes to finish my associates degree now when I left to take care of my first born it was only 2 classes left. Angry and just saying "screw it, I am gonna get this done and out of the way with as fast as possible whatever it takes" and that lead me to reddit posts online and that is how I found your videos about WGU and quickly getting my degree. I applied the beginning of October, did a week of Sophia courses, and a week of getting my google IT support certification for free and got accepted and started in January. I knocked 2 classes out my first week with WGU, 2 more the next week, etc etc. It is now 6 days into march. Just 2 months and change and I have went from needing nearly 30 classes in October, down to 22 at the start of January, I am down to 8 for a degree in BSIT. I will be done with 4 more classes by the end of next week. I have 5 certs from WGU, and will be getting 2 more next week. I wanted to say thank you for your valuable information. It doesn't matter if I leave or stick with my current job. It doesn't matter to me if this will get me a promotion, or do anything more than check a box for others. This has been a huge moral boost for me to finally not feel like lack of certs and a degree hanging over my head making me feel like I am one layoff or bad job change from potentially starting at the bottom again. It is nice to feel like I can do quite a lot if I feel motivated. Word of warning though. While I find these classes pretty easy from my work experience and am good with taking tests. This is all still work. I have spent 2 full months where nearly every night I come home from work and do WGU work until I am done. WGU has been a second full time job for me, but it has genuinely been worth it. Best words of advice I can have if you want to follow. Apply for your FAFSA today, do every course you can for sophia as fast as possible and transfer it into WGU (after wgu checks your other transcripts). I personally skipped a lot of sophia courses to do fundamentals classes with WGU which is also a good option, but every gen ed (and if you don't care for project+ cert then do that class with sophia as well). This has been an absolute ride and even if I don't do anything with it, it has been a massive confidence boost to get me out of my rut and feel like I am doing something again instead of being depressed.

I pivoted from mediocre part-time musician to cybersecurity analyst in about 2 years thanks to this school. It's true that WGU can only get you a 3.00 GPA, but it's the perfect option for a lot of people. WGU is what you put into it. You have to push yourself to be resourceful and self-motivated to succeed. You'll be reading entire textbooks yourself, doing labs on your own, and you don't get to ask as many questions as you would in a conventional class room. The lack of a classroom to show up and sit in means only you can hold yourself accountable for completing your work, and it's so easy to become lazy about it. This school can either be incredibly amazing or absolute garbage for you depending on how disciplined you decide to take it. But even at its peak, no school is perfect. During my time with WGU's cybersecurity program, I had two courses "change versions" on me, meaning the final exam curriculum was slightly altered while I was halfway through the class, which can be very annoying. Also, the quality of program mentor you match with (who is ultimately responsible for determining how fast you're allowed to go) can vary significantly. You can get a brilliant one who understands your needs and pushes you to succeed-- or you can also get a trash one who doesn't care about you. It's possible to request a new mentor through student support if your current one isn't working out, but I was lucky enough to get matched with the most amazing mentor I could possibly ask for from the get go and hit the ground running. Anyway, despite the flaws, WGU is an amazing school and I'm proud to be a WGU alumni. It still has room to improve and I hope it does. Choosing WGU for your degree has a pretty niche use case (such as for those pivoting careers, folks already working in their designated fields, etc) so make sure to do your own research to determine whether it's the best choice for you. Also, let go of your delusions of finishing quickly. I went into WGU expecting to graduate in a year, but it took me two, and I was stacking like 24 units a term.

I’d have no problem graduating from that school. It’s not a scam and it’s not an ITT or University of Phoenix. And although if I were an employer or in law or med school admissions I’d probably look more favorably on a WGU graduate considering the self-motivation and discipline it requires, I suspect that others in those positions generally do not. My undergraduate degree is from the University of Kentucky. Along the same vein an employer or law or med school admissions committee would look more favorably on a Princeton or Yale - or even a Duke or Vanderbilt - degree than mine. But some WGU grads do go to law and med school and also do very well in the job market. Although from what I understand it’s a heavy lift to a law or med school. You essentially have to do well - extremely well - on the entrance exam and also figure out how to make sure you have the necessary pre-med course work in that instance. Because I had a 3.9 gpa I wasn’t under as much pressure when I took the LSAT - and probably did better on it than I would have had I not had that little added cushion of my gpa. It’s not for everybody but again I think it’s a great idea and I would have no qualms about attending. But if I were a graduate I would hope people would hush about getting these degrees in a few months. Yes it’s a selling point but it also cheapens the degree in the minds of many. It is what it is but common sense dictates that a degree obtained in a few months may not be equivalent to one obtained in a few years.

It’s not about profit or “not making sense” when it comes to other colleges not being as transfer friendly as WGU and it’s a little too bias to just write it off that way. The vast majority of 4 year colleges allow up to 60 credits to be transferred from community colleges plus 30 credits on top of that to be from another 4 year. So potential 90 out of 120 credits needed to graduate. Some classes don’t transfer as they don’t match the course curriculums taught at that school. They have an in residence requirement of 30- 45 credits because they want their graduates to represent what they teach and how they teach it. It doesn’t make sense for a Harvard graduate to say they are Harvard educated if they have all their credits from Yale. It’s more accurate to say traditional 4 year brick and mortar schools aren’t “alternative learning/ 3rd party/ credit by examination/ etc” transfer friendly but that still goes back to those alternative courses don’t align with their courses’ curricula - what they feel their graduates should have learned. They want their students to have a more in depth familiarity with the content than these 3rd party courses evaluate for.

WARNING: I would say it's not for people who want to do medicine, law, dentistry, or other post-grad programs because you will get a 3.00 GPA for every course you complete, as it's pass/fail. This is a huge caveat that warrants a thought bubble in the video as it could steer people into the wrong direction that they won't find out about until later. I'm planning on using WGU myself for a Masters degree. WGU is an amazing concept/model.
@thiagomattos30192 жыл бұрын
I’m a little confused. Does that mean you can only go up to a 3.0 gpa and not higher? So a 4.0 is not possible with wgu?
@XAUCADTrader2 жыл бұрын
@@thiagomattos3019 That's exactly what I mean. Because it is competency based, it's pass/fail, so a grad school would have to assign it a 3.00 which can be incredibly damaging to a grad/professional school app.

For medicine and dentistry you will not be able to complete your prerequisite courses at WGU anyway. In fact it is highly discouraged to do them at a community college. You can complete general courses anywhere but your med prerequisites should be done at a 4 year university.

Not Good financially when you’re already paying them thousands of dollars! I wasn’t advised on this during the enrollment process! Their proctor exams ARE hard!!! Also, after a 4th attempt, you must go through an appeals process. Why are you not talking about this? I must also add- while the mentors are really nice, you must reach out to multiple professors for each subject just in one class. They do assign a course instructor but they are mainly there to encourage you, not so much to help you pass. Their lectures are recorded, you only get a live professor by request which is no good if you struggle with certain courses.
