I worked for WGU as a student mentor in the nursing program for five years and it's a good school but you must be a self-starter and focused. The courses take real work and you must know the material, it is not a degree mill. Too many people put off the work and let the end of the semester sneak up on them. I know about the coursework because I earned an M.S. in management while working there.

That is bullshit and it is a degree mill school. I was there for one year and transferred to Arizona State that’s right even Arizona State is better than university of 💩. Your school advertises on daytime television you don’t even get a goddamn grade point average so good luck transferring to another school and those who get a job usually have the field experience and just want to get that degree your school is nothing but a degree factory school

I'm about to graduate with my BS in Network Operations and Security through WGU. WGU is designed for working professionals, and if you have a background already in the industry and need a degree to advance, it's the perfect choice. There is not a lot of hand-holding and leading you around by the nose like you'd find in a traditional school. Some people need that, some don't. I've been in IT for several years, and have earned several technical certifications on my own, so I adapted to the school's format fairly easily.

For the GPA, achieving competency is equivalent to a 3.5 GPA. If for some reason you would need to list a GPA, you could list 3.5 and it would be supported by WGU.

@@ellieem4716 The number they gave is incorrect. WGU uses a pass/fail system that guarantees that students have at least a 3.0 GPA worth of understanding during the final objective or performance assessment of a course. See "Commonly Asked Questions About WGU" on their main site, specifically the "Does WGU have GPA?" section. TL;DR: WGU graduates are guaranteed to have AT LEAST a 3.0 GPA due to their pass/fail grading system.

Personally for myself i am choosing WGU because i work full-time, sometimes overtime, and i am motivated to get the degree as quickly as possible. Plus, money is tight. Make too much per FAFSA but too little to realistically afford more than 1 term at WGU. Hoping for scholarships, if not, i can pay out of pocket for one term and am going to finish because i absolutely have to. Desperation either creates the most motivated people or the most defeated people.

I'm in the process of graduating from WGU (passed the capstone and just waiting on the graduate application to finalize). It's been a good experience. I mentioned the no GPA to one of the first mentor's I'd gotten when I started. Even though the courses are essentially pass/fail, you do sort of get a GPA. It's basically a 3.0, and that fact is mentioned on the transcript that you'd send to any other institution. They are also dumping Examity (the proctoring service) soon, so that'll be a welcome change. I will most likely go back there for a Master's.

My main gripe was, as you hinted, that the course instructors weren't involved. It's a name attached to the class. Only a handful of CI handle all courses in the major. You just get a course showing up in your portal and are expected to read the online materials and do the tasks. They often don't even make a video to explain complex topics or how to do the tasks. For someone like me who absorbs info via in-person classes or videos, this was really disappointing. The mentor was really the MVP.

See... I had a very different experience with this. An in-person class to me was a waste of time. I didn't learn much from WGU's cybersecurity degree but that is only because I am in the military for cyber. I loved their Cybersecurity degree as IT truly is do or die on your own. If you can't teach yourself through reading documentation and doing the task assigned, then odds are IT isn't for that person. However, I understand the frustration especially if you are completely new to the field. My mentor just kinda unlocked classes that I told him I wanted to do because I had proved I would just pass the class in maybe a day or 2. The one course that I had to go to the instructors multiple times on was Managing Cloud Security. That course was very unfriendly to me..

I've used the CIs a few different times and I always ask what the most efficient way is to get through the course. 99% of the CIs have been from decent (knowledgeable at a minimum) to great. Plus, you can meet with a different CI if it isn't going as well. Edit: My mentor has 100% been the goat.

Here’s my argument to your post. You will encounter this same issue in an in-person class. You will still need outside resources to help you understand the material. One’s teacher will have their way of teaching or explaining concepts that are not the easiest. You’re not going to find all the answers in one place. You need to adjust. Being in a professional setting is no different once you land a job in your career. The learning continues outside.

One negative I do have with WGU is if you start you better not change your mind. I wanted my degree 4 years ago and decided to start with them. Life happened and although my classes started, I dropped them 30ish days in. Of course, my fault, but now I feel they’re the best school for me because of their curriculum style but I’m having to jump through hoops to reenroll. You have to do an SAP appeal to be able to use FASFA (10 business day process must have documentation), must pay any collections from prior attendance (up to a 45 day process if you can pay it off), and THEN once you complete both of those and they’re approved, there is a 60 day readmission process where it’s quite possible they may not let you come back. It’s a very stressful process. That being said, I want to go to WGU because I’m at SNHU right now and having to write a paper every single week for every class, plus discussion posts, plus your final essay is a lot. Super writing intensive. Is there a school outside of WGU that would be a good choice that isn’t super writing intensive?

I understand if you'd rather not, but would you be willing to answer a question about the school's Psychology program? Specifically, has WGU set up it's Psychology program in a way that supports students hoping to push their education further? I'm determined to follow through and do what most psych majors don't, move on to graduate school and become an LCSW. Even have a specialty in mind. Doing that requires that I get myself into a graduate program in the first place. Doing _that_ is greatly benefited by having a strong positive relationship with your professors, and a school like WGU seems like a shaky prospect in that regard.

Honestly? If WGU got rid of the proctored exams, I'd say it would be the best school for IT. While yes, you could schedule the exams for any time (I took the Ethics in Technology exam at 3amPT), the fact that there were constantly connection issues, the proctors were rarely understandable with distorted voices, threatened to end your exam if you so much as coughed, and one time giving me the completely wrong test and counting it as a failed attempt killed the idea of WGU for me. Kinda sad when my favorite classes in an IT program were the English Comp I and the Speech class since I was told I could write on and give a speech on any topic I wanted. Honestly now looking at UMPI's Management Information Systems BLS for the degree checkbox on company advancement requirements and augment it with industry certs.

About to finish my MBA. I only ever had issues once with the proctor and it was on my end because my ISP had an outage just as we were starting the verification before the exam starts. I nvr failed an assessment but just from how often my mentor checks in, I am sure they are amazing if you do. My professors also reach out fairly consistently. Having gotten my undergrad from a state school, I actually prefer the flexibility at WGU. I’ve taken online, hybrid and traditional in class courses at my undergrad university and I hated the unnecessary busy work. Working a full time job, being able to knock out a class in a day has been so convenient than having to stay on top of multiple deadlines. I prefer the objective assessments only because I hate writing papers but I have had two performance assessments returned. When they that happens the grader leaves specific notes for correction. Both times it happened I made the corrections in maybe less than 30 minutes and resubmitted. They were pretty quick to get back to me that they passed. Only regret is not knowing about WGU sooner and that was before I heard about the degree hacking. Would have saved so much money.

I was thinking the same thing. The program I want to do is a Masters in Nursing (RN to MSN). Their program info says you can earn your bachelors degree (in Nursing - BSN) in the first part of the program, for RN's that just have their Associate's (ADN), then you progress into the Master's courses. Some of the Master's courses do not require prerequisites, so if you finished with your BSN and just a few of the Master's courses, you can still show on a resume that you did complete them and have that level of knowledge in those areas. So you still get credit for what you take as long as you prove competency, which is good.

Their rather "unique" enrollment process really put me off. I checked around online and people are reporting that my experience with WGU's enrollment process is not at all abnormal. Having to speak to a so-called "Enrollment Councilor" on the phone just to get your foot in the door after applying, okay I can do that, but wait, the enrollment councilor never calls you on the agreed-upon time, and you can't ever call them yourself, and when you finally do get them on the phone, they're late, and you can't hear them because their phone is so bad that it sounds like they're shouting into a vacuum cleaner... okay, maybe you can get used to it and start to make out some words and get a general sense of what they're saying. But then you get disconnected. After about two weeks of getting the run-around, I gave up. A college that is this poorly organized in the enrollment process can't be very good in the parts that really matter.
@CollegeHacked

This is one of the worst, most chaotic college enrollment seasons ever recorded. Major changes were made to the FAFSA for the first time in decades that ended up causing a lot of delays and bugs, meaning colleges have pushed back their enrollment deadlines to cope with a non-functioning FAFSA and are rushing to get everyone in the door and sorted. There’s also a ton of fighting about DEI initiatives, and confusion about standardized test requirements… none of that excuses the poor customer service you received, but it might help give you context for why it’s worse right now than normal.

Stick with WGU :) Like you mentioned, they are the better option if the goal is genuinely to learn and be prepared for a job after. The loss of credit you’re running into is because WGU doesn’t have a free elective section in their degrees, so the only classes that can transfer into one of their majors are classes that directly overlap with what each degree requires. But skipping the free electives means even more classes better preparing you for a job after! It’s all about the highest order goal you have, and for you, it sounds like that is gaining great skills to take into the workforce. So lean into that goal and feel good about it! 💪🏼

Do schools like medical school or physician assistant school will accept the classes you did at wgu for acceptance for their program?
@CollegeHacked
@CollegeHacked Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, virtually all professional health programs (PT, OT, PA, MD, DO, RN) require residential sciences with labs and won’t accept online versions. This changed briefly during COVID for one or two admissions cycles, but that exception looks to be over now. To be sure what your school requires, definitely do your research well ahead of time! And if you need additional help, our academic & career coach Dr. Lauren Daly applied to PA and medical schools herself and loves helping others accomplish similar goals :)

Future PA student here, you will need to have pre-requisites for this type of degree and usually they are science classes such as Anatomy, chemistry, biology, or psychology, on top of the clinical experience. I don't recommend you take those online since many of them will require lab work or more in person activities that you can't do online. Also you won't be competitive when you apply. They will consider someone else over you and this schools are very particular about who they want. I'm taking all my pre-requisites in person at my community college. I'm doing a degree in Business Healthcare, as well as getting my CNA, and doing community service so that I can be competitive once I apply. My suggestion is you speak with the school so they can give you advice on what to do before applying. Good luck.

If I did not have anything to transfer in (as I was not born a US Citizen and have only lived here for 10 years) and was choosing beween WGU and UMPI, which would people choose?

Depends on what kind of experience and major you prefer! WGU has proctored final exams, UMPI has paper/project finals, so no proctoring. Both offer pretty different major options, other than both offering business and psychology.

@@CollegeHacked Accounting is what I am looking at. Working full time in Hospital as Revenue Cycle Director and I want to have the chance to transition to CFO. Born in the UK, so no HS transcripts (just GED) and it looks like WGU gas a require to get on the account course of showing HS transcripts which will be a pain from schooling in the UK. UMPI has no such requirements. The WGU course on the other hand is MUCH more focused on the actual subject and I feel would be better actual training for the role. It's just if I can get in. I don't want to do the prep courses, I want to get started. I'll be 40 this year.

@@ldkellandshawA GED is fine for WGU! In the US, high school transcripts are synonymous with a GED :) Same thing, but some schools don’t make that super clear: As long as you live in the US, WGU should be fine. Just remember you have to hack everything first before you let them enroll you in courses or you’ll get locked out of transferring in credit. You can apply and get accepted first, then pause to hack before enrolling :) You got this!

You do not have to attend community college in order to be accepted to WGU or UMPI! It can be a good option for people who feel it would be a good way to practice study habits before transferring and taking classes at the home institution that are ultimately where the whole GPA comes from, but it's probably fastest and least expensive to skip community college if you're going to either of these competency based schools. :)

I never had a true issue with the proctored exams. Yes, the proctors are difficult to understand, but once you’ve gone through one, you know the steps for the next ones. I also do not believe the proctors are watching you 100% of the time. There were two or three times that I had a question during - I forget if it was to step away - they did not respond. As an online student, you need to compromise. You should expect proctored exams because what’s the alternative? An in-person exam? The whole reason for being 100% virtual is because the majority of students don’t want to travel for school - at all. In short, you can’t have it all. You are choosing to be an online student. You’d be complaining all the same as an in-person student for other reasons.

Don’t go to this degree factory school! They advertise on daytime television and their degree factory school what they don’t tell you is the people who get jobs have the experience and they just need the degree to check off the last thing on the box most of their classes are you don’t even gove you a GPA. Universities law or your degree but it’s competency based all you have to do is answer their stupid weekly question and responded to students. At the end of the day none of the Utah schools including: Brigham Young University, the Univetsity of Utah, Utah State , Webber State University or University of Southern Utah, want anything to do with WGU.

And WGU is good for some people especially those people who have the field experience, but they’re lacking the degree it’s good for working individuals as well. For me however, i want to teamster to John’s Hopkins PhD. Yes JHU will honor WGU but you will have no GPA. At ASU, they will honor your GPA. Graduating classes is easy. It is competency based so they’re just looking for basic competency all you have to do is answer the question of the week and respond to two students. Also, there is a reason why nome of the the Utah schools be it: BYU, U of U, U State or Weber St want anything to do with WGI. And we can agree to disagree , we are all entitled to our opinions, like you said.
