Fun story: here in Brazil this game was reskinned and the main character was replaced by popular comic character Monica. Which is kinda odd, because usually Monica comics are based in a world not unlike our own - not exactly a character you'd expect to star in a fantasy RPG.

Alright, another segadrunk video! Here's a nice story about WonderBoy: there is this hugely popular comic book series called Turma da Monica here in Brazil. Another popular thing is Sega, because there actually was a company specialized in distributing their consoles here: TecToy. And TecToy actually went on to make two mods for Wonderboy, changing its graphics, texts and themes to that of Monica's. So not only it was really cool to see the characters from the comic books in the game but also they were actually speaking portuguese, which we had never seem before. So yeah, WonderBoy is a really good game, but it holds a special place in brazillian hearts.

Okay so basically for those that want to understand the series, the Monster World games mostly share the same base gameplay with different variations on the formula while the non-Monster World games have completely different gameplay formulas for each entry in general. Said games, in order, are: WB1: Wonder Boy - First WB game. A simple side-scrolling arcade platformer, with the occasional skateboard gimmick. Also ported to the NES rebranded as Adventure Island, which turned into its own unofficial spinoff series sharing similar gameplay. The SMS port is known as Super Wonder Boy in Japan, while the Game Gear version is called Revenge of Drancon in the US for some bizarre reason. Also got a weird remake called Wonder Boy Returns. WB2/MW2. Wonder Boy: Monster Land - An arcade direct sequel to Wonder Boy with a completely different gameplay formula, starting the Monster World series. Compared to later entries, the game is more linear and stages are time-limited (as this is an arcade release. The SMS version was renamed to Super Wonder Boy: Monster World for some mystifying reason, but that's where the "Monster World" name started. Also got a PC Engine port, retooled into a licensed Bikkuriman game. What is Bikirriman? Well, simply put, it's a popular brand of wafer snacks in Japan. Yes, really. You can't make this up. WB3: Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair - An arcade autoscroller with run n' gun and sh'mup segments. Ironically, the Genesis port is probably the worst one. Oddly enough, it's the only Wonder Boy game in the series to get an untouched port on the TurboGrafx/PC Engine CD. WB4: Monster World II (JP)/Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (int'l): Someone on the localization team messed up here. Anyway, this game started life on the Master System, and it's the one that really solidified the Monster World formula. My personal favorite. Also got ported to the TurboGrafx as Dragon's Curse, with an original reskin to sever its ties to the Wonder Boy IP, plus it received an amazing remake just a few years back. WB5/MW3: Wonder Boy V: Monster World III (JP)/Wonder Boy in Monster World (int'l) - This game. WB6/MW4: Monster World 4. A more simple game, and easier than the other Monster World games, but it's still pretty great. Recently got a decent remake called Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World. WB7-ish/MW5-ish: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. This is a spiritual successor and not directly tied to the Monster World series, but it continues the gameplay the series is known for.

Hey, let me know if there's still a lot of input lag. I have hearing that was a big issue but I'm not sure if it ever got fixed or if it was as bad as people kept talking about.

I recently discovered the Wonder Boy series and I love these games, the sequel, Monster World IV is also pretty good.

@@gabemorales7814 I haven't, gonna check it out later, there's also an indie game called Aggalos which was inspired by the series, I heard it's pretty good

"You walk to the right and..." Practically every shot: moves to the left 🤷♀😄 Love the review, the Arcade games were of my favourite things to stumble into, nothing like plugging quarters into an RPG!

This was one of my favourite games as a kid and I still have a soft spot for it. I even attempted a sprite webcomic when I was younger...long dead now 😅 That last dungeon was a slog!

@@gabemorales7814 Until you fight the last boss he is way harder than the Wonder boy in Monster land last boss. The hardest part of the castle is when you jump back & forth on those 2 bricks because a lot of times the block gets stuck on the top corners & you fall right down. I found a trick that works though. You just buy Ceramic boots. That part will become super easy & you won't have the blocks get stuck at the top corner since the ceramic boots makes you jump lower than the Legendary boots.

@@gabemorales7814 Ok cool. Hopefully you play this on a CRT where there's 0 lag. Try it in 1 sitting. let me know if it's easier for that part with Ceramic boots vs Legendary boots.

One of my favourite series as a lad, be sure to play "The Dragon's Trap" first to enjoy some of the callbacks late in this game.

FYI, in Brazil these games were rebranded and re-released on the Master System and Mega Drive(Genesis) based on a very popular Brazilian comic book series known as Turma da Monica. Similarly to how Doki Doki Panic was re-released in North America as Super Mario Bros. 2. As far as I know, the reason why this change was made was to boost sales of the very popular Master System in Brazil, which I believe crushed NES sales in Brazil.

This looks really nice! I hate megaman sections like that, but the rest looks like a blast to just mosey around in.

I'm actually building a metroidvania game with a couple of friends, it will be for modern platforms/pc. It is inspired by a lot of these older titles with modern sensibilities.

This game's simplicity is one of its biggest strengths in my opinion; it makes it very accessible for kids. For those looking for something a bit more advanced, definitely check out Monster World IV. It does a great job of mixing up the gameplay, the art's just as good and the animations are the best I've seen on the Genesis.
@tonyp93132 жыл бұрын
You haven't played the last 2 levels of this. For kids this is really hard to figure out where to go & find all the hidden things. I wouldn't recommend this to kids. I wouldn't recommend Wonder Boy in Monster land to kids as that is also hard for them. For kids maybe Wonder Boy 1 on the Master system.

@@tonyp9313 I played this game at launch. I loved it. It was charming and straightforward. I grew up with tons of arcade-style games I couldn't finish consistently (Mario 1, Double Dragon, Zelda 1, the classic Mega Mans, Golden Axe, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi.) Never stopped me from having fun. Yes, the final boss is BS, but so what? Emulators and flash carts have support for save states and cheats.
@tonyp93132 жыл бұрын
@@ArmandoDoval All those games you named with the exception of Zelda & Revenge of Shinobi I can beat all those games in 1 sitting without using save states or cheat codes. Oh ok you are saying for kids to use aids like save states, cheat codes & looking up guides. Then yeah I would probably recommend this to kids & everyone else who hasn't played this game.
