Cheapest way to play Keio Flying Squadron legitimately is to buy the demo of it, as JVC screwed up and left the level select cheat in, unlocking the full game (did a piece about it on my "Game Demos that Accidentally Contain the full game" video) :D Also, ThunderHawk!!!

@@anonamatron the problem was marketing. Sega of America put all effort in propaganda for the shitty FMV games but for the good ones?None. @@carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526 Yeah, it's too bad. I don't think I did much more than read Sega Visions at the time and look at games in the store. The real turning point was when I was at a used game shop looking at Sega CD stuff and the girl working there said "do you like RPGs?" and popped in Lunar, which I'd never once noticed in a magazine or store. That was a quick buy. That made me aware of Working Designs. Most of my friends were big into Final Fantasy, and were pretty amazed by Lunar. Less so by Vay but it was still a cool looking RPG they didn't have access to. Was still having a good time on the Sega CD before noticing those RPGs though.

A really great summary of some of the best/most interesting games on the system. Glad to see some Core games on there - they were to the Mega CD what Rare were to the N64. If you were to ever do a second video, then I would recommend the following: Thunderhawk - another Core game with plenty of scaling. Jaguar XJ220 - if you like Top Gear on the SNES, then you'll like this too Dune - great mix of point and click adventure with resource management/strategy WW3 - a unique strategy game BC Racers - another Core game, this time like Mario Kart (but with Road Rash-style punching) Rise of the Dragon - similar to Snatcher Mansion of Hidden Souls - a Myst-like "horror" game The Mega CD also arguably had the best 16-bit versions of many games: Earthworm Jim, NBA Jam etc. It was definitely more than just an FMV machine (although, I have to admit I quite enjoyed some of those too)

Yeah, what a mistake making that thing the pack-in game. Think that was only on the second model though. I had the first model which came with a bunch of stuff. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective (showed off video and speech which was cool at the time), Sol-Feace, which was a letdown because after the animated intro with voiceovers, which blew me away, the rest of the game was nothing that you wouldn't see in a normal Genesis game... it was a pretty good shooter though, so it was okay. Also got a 4-in1 Genesis CD. Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, and Columns. Just standard genesis games, but a pretty nice collection of good stuff there. I spent a ton of time on that CD. Then I was at a used game shop and the clerk said "hey do you like RPGs?". I said "yes", and she popped Lunar into the Sega CD I was playing stuff on. Bought that, never having even heard of it before, and discovered that the Sega CD had some really good RPGs on it.... I got tons of use out of that thing. For Sewer Shark, just refer to the AVGN review, because it's pretty spot-on.

Fun fact: Toei Animation did the animated footage of the game. [From wiki]: It was animated under the guidance of Yoshinobu Inano, who also directed or key-animated such films such as Gundam: Char's Counter Attack, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, and The Transformers: The Movie. It was animated using 15,000 hand-painted cels to produce over 30 minutes of animation. Game director Yoshihisa Kishimoto, who previously worked on Cobra Command, later directed the arcade version of Double Dragon, where the car from Road Blaster can be seen inside the Lee brothers' garage at the start of the game. Also in the footage of Road Blaster, we can see at the beginning of the gameplay the chopper of Cobra Command/Thunder Storm arcade.

Damn!! I never used the hot line for those but dang was it tricky to figure some of it out. Rise of the dragon was the worse since you could mess up and not even know it and keep playing. Willy Beamish would sometimes freeze up so I once got to a part that I couldn't pass because I thought the game froze up when it didn't lol. Definitely two great games. I would also had the secret of monkeys island to that list.

Saturn had a lot of good games but it sucked unless you are REALLY into fighting games... Probably one of the greatest fighting game line-ups (if you include Japan) but otherwise the library is quite thin. Dreamcast, which will always be one of my favorite systems, had a much better library within 2 years than the Saturn ever had.

Snatcher is really good, it has such a good aesthetic especially if you grew up in the late 80s early 90s. I think Hideo Kojima once said Snatcher and Policenauts were his favorite games and he felt were his personal best games. I always wish he would have made another one like this for GBA or DS.

This may be anecdotal, but having grown up during the heyday of the Sega CD, your impression of the Sega CD was pretty much the norm. It was constantly portrayed as the console of crappy FMV games. It's a real shame because the console has some major cult hits. A choosy collector can actually build up a respectable library of games for the console just by tuning out all of those Digital Pictures/TruVideo releases. I found that Sega CD is one of the more interesting failures in gaming history as it's actually worth revisiting.
@retroprojections
@retroprojections 3 жыл бұрын
No matter how badly they crashed and burned Sega was always interesting. The 90's were very imaginative, with Nintendo and Sega giving no "f" about the perceived rules of video entertainment. In the end, the best video game rivalry of all time made the consumers the real winners.

Eternal Chamoions was a great fighting game! Totally under appreciated and had a fun concept of bringing “champions throughout time.” Teleporting to this tournament before their ultimate demise like Rhamsesll, or a cat burglar during the 30’s and 40’s, Amazon warrior etc. super fun game. As far as a really difficult game Dracula Unleashed was super difficult. The one game I could never beat with my best friend we would rent that game and work on it for 3 days and never get off the first disc of a two disc game.
