As a son , whose dad was abroad living alone, fending for us back in India, for 20 years and my mom saving every penny that he sent back so that me and my sister could have an amazing settled future, I once asked my dad "Was it worth it?". He said "If only you guys live a comfortable happy life." He passed away soon after that. On his deathbed he said his only regret is he couldn't spend enough time with his family, he couldn't see our children and rest for a while. Since then I sort of prioritised being with family and near and dear ones, familiar faces.Before my dad passed I spent a year in NY studying and felt we Indians stick together more there , hang out in groups, we show more camaraderie than what we usually show in India. As a family, we become more tight knit due to some sort of 'imposter in foreign land mentality'. If you don't believe me, just have a casual walk outside Newport station in New Jersey. Being from a stable 'mid upper' middle class family , taking my family and sustaining a life there worrying about expenses and living job to job just seemed too much . I mean 'what is better standard of living' if you always feel like an alien, I know third generation Indian Americans who are still racially abused . That one year abroad helped me understand at the end of the day people there watched more indian movies, attended more shows from any random indian celeb and follow cultural indoctrination to the T. Sometimes teenagers on Indian instagram are more west than them. So I decided I rather stay back home, without the worry of where my next dough would come from, stay with family and not 'miss home'. I'm at HOME. As far as money is concerned, hopefully we are spending and saving wisely as dad intended.
@rsrs69592 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. Wise decision I must say. Life is short and it feels long when you are living where you feel like an alien, where you are not truly happy and don't have belonging and love. God bless you and always keep you happy. 🙏🙏

I am working in MNC managing projects in Asia, EMEA, US. I have worked in different parts of India & travelled different places in different states in India. I have also travelled to different countries on business trips for few weeks to few months. You are right that working with different people & culture gives global perspective, it changes attitude, enhances personality. It changes thought process. That's very important to grow anywhere in the world. 12 years back I had chance to move to US long term but after doing Maths & personal reasons I decided to stay in India, and preferred to travel on shorter business trips (at least for couple of months). I think the question pertains to just "working" abroad. Settling there is totally different. Working in a multicultural and multilingual environment is a life shaping experience. It also helps earn a lot of money but that's worth that much only if you spend in India. Moving permanently abroad has to have much more justifiable reasons. E.g. humanitarian crisis, war, famine, unemployment, poverty etc. Thats typical for a Pakistani or a Syrian may be, but not in India. For us, earning in dollars and coming back to India is the sole motivation.

There is a reason why Western Countries and Gulf Muslim countries (UAE, Saudi, Qatar, etc.) are DEVELOPED. I dont know why people here is so much motivated to live in abroad. This problem is known as 'Brain Drain' which had aroused back in early 21st century. As a youngster you should try to contribute to your country as much as you can in the form of quality work. We have ocean of opportunities here with the right skill set. Working abroad for short term can make sense but in the longer run, u have to come back to your roots someday.

Better earn millions in india while trading with international business people and you can literally travel the world every other weekend. You will definitely learn more and groom yourself more. Also india is perfectly and centrally located to travel the whole world.

Ofcourse its great to work/study abroad but if um for some reason ,can’t , even then u should atleast travel in India….u will be surprised,…abt the beauty, culture, food, people…..u’ll learn so much…..and by travel I don’t mean to and fro travelling….going to someplace, and come back…u knw something which is planned…NO……take a week off every year and go on an unplanned vacation….yes there will be some difficulties but u”ll gain soooooo much…believe me…

Hi Sir - I've theee questions for you -- 1) In which city in India did you come back, any particular reason why you like this particular city at India ? 2) Is there something called settlement in life - now that you left job how will you spend most of the time with ? 3) I'm a big fan of yours and have similar preference of life, would you still give career higher priority over family at this stage of life ?
