No not really, I don’t see what XP12 can add to my flight sim experience with MSFS2020 + Aero. I haven’t even bother trying XP12. I tried XP11 in the past. From what I have seen on youtube it doesn’t even come close in visuals, performances and ease of use meaning MSFS2020 doesn’t require anything to look good, no ortho, ORBX, etc. And even with the extra stuff, I don’t think it can rival with the visuals. For having been a real IFR rated pilot and currently using a 6DOF motion sim, I am extremely impressed and happy with the flight dynamics MSFS2020 is currently offering. I think at this point in the flight dynamics debate, it’s probably a matter of preferences, both being equally good! I am glad XP12 is trying, we need competition, but right now they’re too far behind MSFS IMHO, I wish them the best! Now what I am more interested in, is P3D apparently switching to UE5, let’s wait and see what they will be able to come up with! But even there I don’t think they’ll be able to rival with MSFS. At the moment MSFS2020 is the power house with Microsoft behind it and the amount of resources it can provide, and let’s not forget the sim is only gonna get better and so is XP12! My 2 cents! I totally agree with you that the realism factor of VR in X-Plane 12 edges out MSFS2020. I would also add that X-Plane 12 owns the night as well. Well done!

For the sake of pushing innovation from all flight sim devs, it's EXTREMELY important that all the KZbin flight sim channels (and the community) feature and support BOTH MSFS and X-Plane. It's absolutely clear that X-Plane, with version 12, is a fantastic competitor to MSFS, and with this VR feature, that's going to (/must) continue. --> The LAST thing anyone wants - devs or the community - is for this field to be reduced to a single player. Remember Intel before AMD's Zen? - appalling innovation for waay too many years. Imagine if there was only a single player in HDM's?!

Yes Steve, please make some more X-Plane 12 videos, hopefully focusing on settings for VR. I have a 9900K @5GHz, 32GB @3600, 3090, and a Varjo Aero. I would love to be able to tweak X-Plane to the best performance possible. In my opinion I think X-Plane has better flight dynamics. Now we just need Orbx to update their stuff.

I love X-Plane, having been a supporter since XP7, I would love to see more vids on XP. The lighting is a real winner for me, it’s just makes it far more immersive. I’ve been using XP12 more than 11 these days. It’s still early days and XP development will always get better, especially since I’m running an older system with a GRX1650 4Gb. Great vid!

Don't own a pico, but I've heard the best practice is to run it on a dedicated router in the same room.

X-Plane 12 looks so much better to me than msfs. I don’t understand people. Look at the ground textures in the airport with the cracks on the aspalt, the grass that is realistic etc… in msfs the tarmac texture is a bland grey crap with ridiculous 10cm large gravels, the side of runways is made of a crappy soft blend, the grass is a low quality mushy grunge texture. How can people criticize xplane so much regarding graphics vs msfs when it’s actually superior on many points ? Makes no sense to me. Msfs only beats xplane when you are very high up because they can stream satellite textures, and (most) cockpits are more detailed I agree (and laminar should really update that), otherwise I think many people say one looks better without really comparing the demo… but it’s true that performance wise xplane could improve a lot, just like msfs did.

As a long time fan of the channel I personally would love for it to go back to it's roots a little and hear some more detailed thoughts/setups etc on xplane 12. I appreciate it doesn't get the views so you can't put to much into it in that regard but I and I'm sure quite a few others would look forward to some more of this content. To me the 'blade element theory' really is simulated flying. was good that !!!

I'm using a Rift CV1, 1080Ti and I7 11700. I deliberately peg my FPS at 30 using VMI-Twick and the XP12 demo works great. I will probably buy the full version once I have seen that the Orbx GB scenery works OK. Yes, more videos please!

First time viewer here. Subscribed in the hopes for more x-plane 12... 🙂 I have a R7 5800x3d + GTX 2080 + Valve Index, and I'm not really happy with the performance. To get 40 frames I have to turn gfx down quite a lot. I hope LR can improve that in the future... 🤔 And I agree, they absolutely nailed the lighting.

Thank You for the XP12 video. I have Ryzen 5900X/32GB/4090/Varjo Aero VR and the XP-12 seems to be quite CPU heavy in some maps according to fpsVR. Maybe MSFS had similar issues in the beginning. Let's hope there will be improvements in graphics optimization as well as level of detail adjustments involving the CPU. The flight modeling is IMO better than in MSFS for sure. I'm a pilot but have been into engineering for long long time since those days in aviation. XP-12 has many new aircraft which is also nice. There is a very nice glider among others but what really caught my attention was the Beta eVTOL. That looks revolutionary. I believe Austin was involved in the early simulations of that aircraft. There is a KZbin video on that. Search for new beta evtol and you'll find it. So, XP-12 looks very promising but needs to improve on the fps performance. .. and yes, please, more XP-12 content would be very nice.

XP has always been CPU-bound unfortunately. The developers think that 40 fps is good enough (based on their statements from time to time) and they optimize the simulator's requirements to match that.

I prefer XP over MSFS, yes MSFS looks great from higher perspective but near the ground cities looks apocalyptic. I dont like the helicopter flight model and I really hate the menu, the Installmanager and the long loading times of msfs. XP12 is much easier to setup and go for a quick flight, I also prefer the clear structures over the AI generated stuff. But my favorite scenery is still the handcrafted Marianas Island at DCS ;) So please more XP contend! And would like to see how the pico4 performs at a last gen system … for example I have a ryzen 5700x, RTX 3080 12GB , 32GB RAM

I would love to see more x-plane 12 videos. We're pretty much back in the prime of fsx when all the other sims didn't get much attention from content creators (gosh I hate that term) regardless of how good they were which was a shame. Honestly once they sort out some live weather weirdness and improve the anti-aliasing a bit (though I already prefer it over msfs's taa) with some ortho it'll look *very good* The creator/owner of x-plane also said that improving scenery is rising to the top of the priority list for them.

Mate, give autoortho a look. I use it and it pushes the ground textures to almost as good as msfs. But autoortho with xplane 12 and xplane's avionics is >>>>> msfs.

Yes indeed do more content. One of things about X Plane 12 as you mention scenery wises that is not on par with MS, however the scenery is step up especially with some default airports and some city landmark and the vegetation where some would rather fly with just the default with maybe a few Othos. Other has added the Sim Heaven scenery and Orbx TE which I have short cuts links to my 11 installation. The lighting really looks convincing where you see the time of day just by the sun position with the looking at the clock. I had completed a flight from Naples Florida to Port of Spain in Trinidad in the Aeroback Phenom 300. That was nearly a 4 hr flight and enjoyed every bit of it, round trip in VR. In the Zebo I did 17 all VR and working on CL650 in Van Nuys to do a test flight to Catalina Island. I think I might told you but if not I settle for the meta quest 2 and I am enjoying. I believe LR will be working on add OpenVR support as it was on the list of todo's. Right now I am 12.01 b1 release. So yes, it time for you come back home. You been out there playing around long enough.😉 But all seriously we need some reviews and set up for the new user out there. I think it would be good for them who wants to get into X Plane and use VR to know what to expect when they looking to get a headset.

Hi Steve - Been loyal to XP11 and now 12 mainly thanks to Toliss line of planes and an almost 6TB library of Ortho and 100s of payware scenery. G2 has been my choice of headset and I have logged more than 1000 hrs flying in VR so far, Despite having a 3080Ti /10900K i9 I am forced to use the OpenXR mickey mouse trick in order to get decent performance in VR in Xp12 at a cost of losing functionality of my controllers. Would love to see you explore better VR options for us until LR fixes the VR solution. - Many thanks - Kam

Hi Steve, Without a doubt xplane 12 is a great platform for serious simmers. I would be very interested if you could show us how to setup the open composite tool along side the open xr toolkit companion. I have not been able to use this with xplane 12, every time I try to use it with xplane 12 my sim crashes, so that would be my top priority. Keep up the good work.

I am using Xplane 11 and 12 and msfs. There are thousands of videos about VR set up for msfs using all available headsets but almost nothing and absolutely nothing new on either xplane sims. I am sure that a few videos involving different headsets would be appreciated. Msfs is more than 2 years old now so give some time to XP12 and we will be surprised. Let us not forget that XP is the only sim that is recognised for commercial DOT approved simulators. That alone should send a message to non believers.

On my PC with Windows 11 (RTX 3070, 64 GB RAM) X-Plane 12(last Pre-Version before Final) works very unstable! (In VR i can't See my Controller) it crash many often to Desktop, if it Start it works max. 5 Minutes and crash... I will try a new Demo with Final Version but currently i love to fly in MSFS2020. 🙂

Ive tested the new machine a lot 13900k rtx4090 DDr5 6000, and it is confirmed frame generation is indeed working with MSFS 2020 in VR. It does have limitations though and photogrammetry has to be off. I have everything set to ultra on both pc and vr, and am getting 128fps flying most aircraft. If I turn off frame generation it drops to 58fps. I have a 1080P 48 inch monitor/tv and the simulator is run at full screen. Running windowed makes all kinds of problems with frame generation on, and it crashes with most aircraft. Just thought you would like to know Steve.

just wanted to add Directx 12 for people who don't already know has to be utilized, and also I am using FSTL for traffic, and that does drop my fps somewhat. Frame generation in VR seems to work better with msfs aircraft that came with the sim, and some add on aircraft are less stable. I don't really need frame generation, just thought it would be interesting to try it out. I also have the rolling data turned off, because with 1.25 gig download speed I don't need it, and it is way smoother without it on. I mean like butter no matter how close to the ground I fly. Later guy, thanks for the videos as always, and I won't be buying Xplane12 any time soon. Just deleted xplane 11 from my older machine.

Hi VR Flight Sim Guy, thanks for the KZbin video. I would love to see more. I am a mad VR X-Plane 11/12 user. With and AMD Ryzen 7 RX5800 3d XT CPU and and AMD RX 6800 XT GPU with Oculus Quest 2 VR headset and I can never get more than 30 FPS in low density scenery and barely struggle with to get 20 FPS in ORBX and ORTHO scenery. X-Plane 12 is even worse I will always get booted out of Vatsim at large airports or major cities because I fall below the 20 FPS benchmark. Furthermore ZINC will not work with the AMD GPU as the screen becomes jumpy and unplayable. I have finally bit the bullet and decided to turn green and I'm waiting on an NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4070 Ti GPU. So any tips that you may have would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers Zed

How clear are you navigation and instruments. Meta Quest 2 is big let down in that department for me. I wondered if your pico headset suffers from blurr. I am constantly having to use zoom to see anything small.

Go into your oculus software and make sure the resolution is set to max there. Also make sure it's not being changed in steamvr if you're using it. It can display things with more than enough resolution to read things in a cockpit without zooming in (and being able to is pretty objective). The issue is performance like always

got my pico 4 and nah bro,even with a 4090 and VD the compression artifacts are crazy with a last gen expensive router,the lenses are great,the panels are also good and sharp,but damn what a tragedy lack of a 5$ display port connection is for this headset,so im back to my 8kx and returned it.

The experience probably also depends on your bit rate and network strength. I've heard some people absolutely love it, while other like yourself are struggling. However, I'd never recommend anybody change from an 8KX to a Pico4!!

Thanks for this. I'm wondering when I might enjoy XP12. i hate having to get out my hand controllers to enter the "menu" in the hangar. This seems unwieldy. I've had XP12 siince early access, and still haven't had a decent flight in it VR or otherwise. It just seems to be an "update" to XP11 more than a totally new product. But, I like supporting Austin and Laminar for all they are doing. Right now, I enjoy MSFS much better, although to move to Xbox support at the cost of all else is annoying me as well in MSFS, too, however.

I’m a huge fan of XPlane and running an i9 with a a 370Ti. I have always preferred the feel of XPlane but have had loads of trouble with the new version where it just crashes. At one point it would do this on loading but after reinstalling the whole program it now usually waits till I’m well into a vr setup takeoff and then crashes. I’m so disappointed with it I now stick to MSFS. A huge shame to me but reliability is paramount. I wonder if anyone else is having the same problem. Now if I do try XP I revert to version 11.

I fly x-plane 12 in IFR with mostly airliners up high with some ortho scenery. Looks decent. Low level VFR and VR flying, MSFS absolutely destroys x-plane 12.

I'm running a Valve Index under Linux, Core i7-7700K, RTX 3080. Under XP11, I get 40 fps. Under XP12, I get 17 fps. The clouds in XP12 still look very blocky and low-res. Not sure why you're getting good clouds and my clouds look like crap. I still haven't purchased XP12. I want to purchase, but I'm waiting for VR optimization.

please , make more vids of xp12 ! I'm a big fan from the very first start of xp adventures. I was very frustated whith all the non official releases , with shimering, poor framerate, black line in the sky and more. But the official release makes me happy to buy it. best interface of the sims (msfs,dcs...) very ergonomic, feelling of really flying a real arcraft and not playing a game on a console,sounds, lightning, night - OMG ! fly at night as no comparaisons in others sims! But some point to get: they kept the same engine and add more autogen. As the result: poor framerate. yes it's smooth with a Cirrus,but try the Zibo , with Ortho, simheaven, and take off at KLAX with those settings. your 4090 will cry. and you are lucky to have this beast, my old 1080TI is on their knees at low settings. Oh, and really, am I the only one who didn't like those trees? when we're in flight, we don't see every tree one next to one ! we see pack of trees, just a green mass irregular and with changing color! Asobo has understood this. realism takes a bullet in the legs with those trees. Thanks to be there and share your opinion, happy new year for you and all the simmer community!

The lighting doesn't look as good as msfs though. Lighting isn't the light. Light is about reflections. Light is everywhere. Part of light is surroundings. It is what you see. The environment matters. When looking into the sun msfs and can xp compete, but part of the lighting is looking at clouds, rivers, mountains. It is about contrast vibrance and everything. 7:49 Where this for example is not necessarily bad, it is probably a little outdated. It does not at all resemble reality. Where are the clouds casting shades on the ground. The ground looks like it is high overcast. I think the lighting engine in some easy situations like overcast can maybe compete, but in others it is just leagues behind msfs.

X-Plane 12 VR is a pain in the butt compared to MSFS. MSFS is quick and easy to setup for Vr flying x-plane 12 it's just awful when it comes to graphics etc.

45 fps is uncomfortably too low in my view. 90 fps is bare minimum for enjoyable VR experience.

I have MSFS, Areofly and x-plane 11. X-Plane 11 is at the bottom of that list. The interface, the graphics and overall game play are really bad compared to the other two. I had to spend hours adding add-ons to make it playable. I sure x=plane is better.

Performance hog. With an rtx 2080 in XPlane 11 I had to turn everything down and fly high. I am not even tempted to try it as I am sure the performance won't be any good at all with triple screens and VR. I get between 30 and 50fps, depending where I fly, with 1080p triple screens on near ultra settings in MSFS2020 on my 10th gen i9 Rtx2080 and about the same on my i7 2070S on a similar triple 1080p setup. With the Bing world and photogrammertry I am more than happy.

man id love to configure a flight but doing anything in a menu in VR is fucked and eye straining..... thats why MSFS is great for VR because you can press CTRL+TAB and easily go from VR to monitor and back

Laminar need to stop fiddling with flight models and focus on the visuals at this point. They are like 10+ years behind on the visuals now and other than the new clouds they've made virtually no other improvements. The 3d trees look terrible, the roads and edges of lakes and waterways are still jagged, the buildings still look like building blocks. I actually find that X-Plane 11 with the add-ons available for it can be made to look better than X-Plane 12, which is quite sad. In contrast, MSFS with my RTX 4090 and my Pimax Crystal headset looks photorealistic. The only bad thing I can say about MSFS at this point in comparison is that they need to continue working on the flight model to bring that "alive" feeling that you were talking about to the planes. The flight models are kind of ok but they need to feel more fluid.

Dear Steve, I'm glad you tried the XP12 again, especially in VR which is how I fly only. I agree with you regarding the feeling you feel when flying a plane in XP.... I'm not a real pilot, but having tried the two Simulators, I like the feeling of Laminar planes more. but attention FS2020 has improved a lot in that aspect. set my configuration: i7 8700K @4.5Ghz , gtx 1080ti 32Mo RAM - Nvme disks for win 11 and XP12 , Oculus Rift S I get 23-24 fps. I bought Msfs recently and quickly refunded it, I have a 3080ti and it ran like shite. Not paying £50+ for a game that barely runs on top tier cards. I want to love flight sims but they’re so badly optimised it’s beyond a joke. I wish KZbinrs called out this bullshit more.

​@@VRFlightSimGuy The 4090 is a complete marvel in terms of compute performance, yours has been brought to its knees in return for sub par graphics (compared to other games). It's badly optimised. Compare it to the performance on the Xbox The 4090 is 10 times faster (TFLOPS). Where the hell is all that extra resource going? I guess the term 'sim' gives it a free pass for it's abysmal performance.

@@L3eh123 Check out my 4090 first look video in msfs and get back to me. X Plane is not well optimized yet, a discussion I highlight in this very video? There are not many other applications you can buy within the consumer market that's more complex than a modern flight simulator. At times I'm achieving over 200% more performance than my old 3090. There is still work to do, but I call that progress.

I acknowledge this video is about XPlane, my main complaint is about MSFS (Xplane is collateral) which I had to refund because it ran abysmally. The physics in flight sims haven't progressed too much in the last 10 years. I watched your 4090 MSFS debut video... I think your mistaken using the term progress, NVIDIA bringing out a more powerful graphics card isn't progress for MSFS, it just makes up for the shortfall and shines the turd a little brighter..
