I was disappointed you really didn't understand the full working of the AESS system. You never touched on the crossover or the fact the top loaded speaker is more like a sub woofer in the sense that by selecting 700 hz in the Function menu . This allows only 700 hz and lower through the top speaker. It also provides a spatial sound in the same manor. I quite like it. Now I too could run the audio through my studio monitors and greatly enhance it. That would be true for a $5K radio as well. In conclusion for you to say this is a disappointment is curious. I think the AESS version provides a sound quality ( when used correctly), as good or better than almost any Radio on the market ! Well worth the extra $50. PS By using the "curve" filter at a center near 650 hz and a little DNR, the audio is quite pleasant and warm. Better than most radios I've ever heard. There is also a Bass - Mid - Treble function in the RX audio menu to make it even better.

I think you are correct that the radio itself has the ability to have its audio tuned to get the best out of it. It is a small 8 ohm speaker in a metal box that was sized and designed to look pretty when put next to the radio.

I am tired of people mis representing this radio ! "TruthFilter" your absolutely right. It seems most people dont get the sound they want because they dont read the manual, watch yaesu videos, and actually adjust their sound. AESS mixed with their notch filter. I get great Audio!

I've found that the Realistic Minimus 7 is simply the best sounding speaker for communications. It's clear and has a great range. I've got 6 of them in my shack.

That's funny, I was going to say the same thing. I also have 6 Minimus 7 speakers in my shack. They are great sounding speakers. I bought my first pair back in the 80s.

Which is why the cheaper 710 "Field Edition" makes more sense. It come with a nice strap too!

Adding the material kind of bypasses the whole function of the AESS system. Its supposed to be an acoustically tuned chamber. Anyway, you coukd play with the many adjustments to tune the audio to a more warm pleasant sound Im sure..

when I am picking up a transmission that is to bass or to treble you can use the AESS to adjust it out. He also held his mic by the external speaker only... not giving the effect of both speakers working together.

Most rigs' internal speakers are crap and are only driven by about 0.65 watts. I gave up on my rig's internal speaker and built an external amplified speaker with DSP spectrum noise reduction. I reverse engineered an Motorola 18W bridged amplifier and built that into an enclosure with a home brew DSP and TFT display. Then I found a bunch of Motorola cop radio speakers on eBay. The results were so fantastic I built three different versions for all three of my rigs.

I use a soundcore speaker and it sounds great, I would love to find a 50 watt speaker and hook that up.

You don't understand the advanced engineering and economics in play here. The speaker cost $1.29. The plastic enclosure cost $3.71. The Yaesu sticker cost $96.

I wrote a big explanation on this... but TLDR so I rewrote it simpler... just get a pair of 4 ohm low wattage bookshelf speakers and run them in series either side of the radio with the radios speaker just audible.

Disappoints you? I could not agree more. I purchased the Field version but added my own external speaker just for a test. I was not impressed. I think the AESS as well as the 3D display feature is all hype. I do not see any value with the 3D display. As for the speaker, I use only my external speaker in the shack and the internal stand alone speaker is ok for a POTA activation. I forgot, I also went into the menu and took away a lot of the base in the audio. Did not like the way the radio sounded with the default settings. Barry, KU3X

LOL it is interesting, your video stating a distaste for the radio convinced me to buy one. For me, the more lows on the sound is harder to differentiate the phenomes. With the AESS focusing it's ability to make the speech easier to understand not necessarily a better sound. Mixed with the notch filter I get great audio out of mine. Also the appeal of a radio's sound also comes down to the ear of the beholder. Meaning we all have different hearing. Some people hear high pitched tones better, some low pitched tones better, some mid range tones are better and then add how our hearing diminishes. I hear less high frequencies than I used to (age and exposure to loud noises over the decades), so for me the AESS system rocks., also an internal equalizer you can adjust as well. I had to throw in my 2 cents, I love my FT-710.

I have the yaesu ft500 and not impressed with the aess sound. I think your speaker sounded better with the stuffing. It got rid of the echo. Try Heil's parabolic equalizer might sound better.

It definitely got better with the acoustic insulation tjats for sure, it sounded muddy and hollow before, after adding the foam it got crisper with higher tone quality. These manufacturers really need to do a better job especially with what they're charging for these products.

I have the FTDX101MP, it has an external speaker integrated into the power supply and for "symmetry" they make an extension speaker too. (So you can have both main and sub-receiver routed to external speakers). It all looks great but sounds awful, the sort of sound we expect from a cheap speaker in a glorified biscuit tin. I suspect I will ultimately use a pair of old computer speakers. One of my older Yaesu speakers has a t-shirt stuffed in the case, sounds much better than it did, a shame as these speakers do the radios no justice. Soon have you reaching for your headphones...

yup, very lame sounding audio and lacking frequency response. kids who grew up on heavily compressed digital audio just don't know what sounds good these days. something happened at yaes too, like they stopped caring. the menu design team doesn't talk to button layout team either but the worst part is there is zero possibility of communication between customers and management. the us based cust srvc team does the company a great disservice with their attitude.

I'm not crazy about the design of the large buttons and nobs forcing more menu options. It would have been nice to have more, smaller buttons so one doesn't have to go into the menu as much like the FTDX10.

In the external speaker case, it looked like the speaker is mounted on a plate with very little open area for the speaker's sound to pass through. Only a few holes. I'd try to make another plate where the entire speaker's surface is open to the inside of the box like conventional speaker enclosures. I'm certain that could be an easy source of the tinny sound. 73

I'm glad i watched this video, the audio sounds like crap ! I just bought a set of Phonema Miranda - S speakers for my Icom 7610 and I am truly amazed at the audio quality! I had thought of buying a 710 as a backup, but not now. Sounds like the audio is coming from the bottom of a barrel!

Audio is fine, especially through the external speaker, which I already had. The FT710 is a great radio, and I don't regret the purchase. The receive sensitivity and filtering is phenomenal.

ohm is a unit of measure you mean resistance (or impedance) there is no way to lower the resistance of a speaker other than hook up two in parallel. the speaker should have been matched electrically and accoustically to the radio but the whole thing has been cheapened so much it's just sad.
