Yoshi players are undoubtedly getting better at smash. But it is true that most of the top tier characters can counterplay him (not extremely but definitely harder). If you use Samus or a character with a sword larger enough to zone him, he can suffer to hit the enemy. Overall, it's like use Wario but honest and with different inputs (just my opinion)

I mained Yoshi for the entirety of this series. With Ultimate, he's damn near perfected. Bless your soul Mashedpotato Samurai sama ;_;. While Yoshidora is the current king of Yoshis, I do really like Meme's Yoshi's playstyle as he aims to crack shields with point blank aerial ground pounds. I am curious now that you brought it up, why don't you give Yoshi a whirl? He's loveable and FUN!

I agree yoshidora is king. I like Ron’s style though. Yoshidora will kill you in 3 interactions, Ron will kill you with 1, but plays less safe and overextends. It’s fun to watch though

If a lot of people in the west play Yoshi at a serious high level he'll be a almost unstoppable I've being saying over and over again Yoshi is a sleeping potential most Japanese player consider Yoshi one of the best fighters in Smash Ultimate

I'd argue that Yoshi is indeed a meta relevant character in Ultimate. You've got Yoshidora tearing it up in Japan consistently getting 3rd and 2nd at supermajors and atleast usually making top 8 during his lows. He's won Maesuma Top 8 with Yoshi. On the other end of the spectrum we have Meme and a slew of other Yoshis putting in work too. The character has a presence in both USA & Japan. It's not early meta anymore. Yoshi is so much better than Smash 4 it's amazing. ( Honestly would've been his worst iteration had 4 lived longer. Brawl Yoshi had a lot of specific tech that really gave him an edge vs the upper cast. Meanwhile 4 Yoshi was gutted in so many ways and his core issues were NEVER addressed during that game's life cycle. WHY DID F SMASH LAST ONLY 1 FRAME IN SMASH 4? AND WHY DID BAIR HAVE MORE ENDLAG THAN ZARD'S? ) The character is totally deserving of his top 20 spot on the official tier list. Everyone has been putting in the work to make Yoshi shine this time. There's no stone walling the character like what happened early on in 4. We're realizing his "potential" now. It really helps that Yoshi is actually decent against the Big 4 characters. (Steve, G&W, Sonic, ROB. )

@@comprehendsirlgarbagedispo1495 Defensive characters that can force their gameplan on the rest of the cast without ever having to really change their playstyle will always rule the meta. It's happened in every smash game and was super prevalent in Smash 4. People figured out the top 10 about 2 months into the games lifespan and the top 4 even faster and they never really shifted until DLC came and powercreeped everything. I loathed Smash 4 in it's entirety. Absolute trash 2 stock meta with rage jank that would happen so regularly that it's to be expected. Rosa, ZSS, Sheik Diddy top 4 was terrible to watch. Only got worse when Cloud & Bayo came in.

Another thing about Yoshi is that he fits in really well as sort of an anti-meta character. He matches well into a lot of the characters that are prominent meta threats right now, like Steve, G&W, Kazuya, Snake, Min min, R.O.B, etc. And as many have said, his bad matchups are still very winnable. For example, Yoshidora has a winning record against Shuton's Aegis to the point where he plays Olimar in their sets now instead.

Very true. Only things are that Kazuya wins and he does have one really bad MU which is Samus.

@galuna_ I think Kazuya is even. Yoshi juggles Kazuya really hard, he has a massive mobility advantage, a lot of his pancake moves like down-tilt go completely underneath EWGF, and if Kazuya's combos aren't frame tight, Yoshi can escape them. The only reason it isn't winning imo is because your range means you still have to actually *fight* Kazuya

Only gof awful MU for Yoshi is Samus. Besides that Aegis and Shulk are really bad. Then the rest of the losing it's just Sonic, Kazuya, Palu, and swordies with the exception of Ike whom Yoshi beats. Dino has a really good MU spread.

Nah, I've always believed in Yoshi since the beginning; easy high tier. Now that his meta has developed, I think he's top 20. He only has a handful of losing match-ups, and all of them are -1 at worst.

@@steamboatbill4 Palutena, Cloud, Sora, Samus, Lucina, and Mythra are his worst match-ups (-1). There are a couple of other losing mus that are -. 05, but regardless, Yoshi does well vs most of the cast and can hold up against his few losing match-ups imo.

As a Yoshi main I’d say his loosing matchups (from most difficult to easiest) are palu, shulk, Samus, Lucina, Corrin, Aegis, Cloud, Byleth, Greninja, and Sephiroth none of these are that bad and are all certainly doable

@@oneofthe12sionmains70 I guess I haven't fought a super strong Samus but the matchup isn't that bad so I am curious to hear @XanderW7381's experiences. The main challenge is getting in between all the projectiles but you have tools to go and edgeguard Samus and juggle them in advantage state. I'd much rather fight Samus than a swordie, especially Cloud or Aegis. Those two are MISERABLE to fight against.

​@oneofthe12sionmains70 There's a few reasons why Samus is really bad for Yoshi. First, Yoshi has a very low shortstop, which means he has to full-hop over any of Samus's projectiles, making his approach more predictable. Two, Samus fair is incredible at stuffing out Yoshi's aerial approaches because it covers the 45 degree angle well. Three, Samus can hurtbox shift with bomb, which really hinders Yoshi's juggling, because his up-air isn't an arcing hit. In addition, Samus up-b is fast enough oos to punsh all of Yoshi's aerials. Samus also can edgeguard Yoshi pretty well because Yoshi doesn'thave a great ledgesnap, and bomb and chargeshot cover ledge really well. I think the fact that she has great grab range and a killing up-throw also reduce the utility of Yoshi's otherwise incredible shield. TL:DR- Samus keeps Yoshi in the blender by forcing and then countering approaches, she is difficult for Yoshi to keep in disadvantage, and she has really good survivability and stray-hit KO power, which is why I think it's his worst matchup.

Yoshi is super good, but it doesn't matter to me because Corrin slams 😊 Jokes aside, he is super good in Ult. That invincible jump does him wonders in disadvantage. It's almost impossible to edge-guard him, so you have to farm him onstage.

The reason Yoshi sucked at launch was because Yoshi players were bad. That character was ALWAYS broken af I main Puff so this might be baised as Yoshi is her worst mathup

Arguably top 20 despite being underoptimized. Yoshi is a master of survival, being hard to catch, hard to combo, hard to play advantage against, and heavy all at the same time.

This character is absolutely privileged in every category: heavy weight, best air speed in the game, all a buttons are good (high priority and sword like hitboxes, lingering strong killing aerials, a generous long acting spike hitbox, a stupid jab and dash attack that clanks with projectiles it rly has no business doing) and all b buttons are good (even egg roll at the ledge) gets free super armor for his double jump so just waits to hit you if you try and edge guard him, so he doesnt die unless he explodes its actually pretty annoying to gimp him for a character that has "no up b" (he can up b several times before it gives him no more anymore, then he still has air dodge left for a pseudo 3rd jump combined with the best air speed in the game when feather weight characters like Jigglypuff should have that) And if you think you can just shield spammy yoshi aerials, he has an aerial command grab to punish you If you think you can shield one of his ridiculous fast and strong smash attacks (forward smash flattens and rears back his hurtbox so dramatically and gives him invunerable frames on his whole head, dsmash is stupid fast, up smash is mini Ridley upsmash with less ending lag) yoshi can just punish you by breaking your shield with down b fairly easily if dont react fast enough and its his up b is his anti juggling tool that his harder to consistently punish than you think from the range of the stars that pop out from his landing Also his standard grab is a ranged grab like Steve or pacman or lucas or links and his egg shield makes it impossible to shield poke him He is just absolutely privileged in every area that matters and his one weakness doesn't work becuz his immense air speed, double jump armor, heavy weight, and vaired angles of up b eggs make him harder to gimp than you think He's harder to juggle than you think due to the best air speed in the game and his down b as well Swordies can do well against him by actually getting to juggle him and beat out his hitboxes but i still hate fighting against this privileged character. Yoshi can just mash against anyone with out sword like hitboxes and he never dies trying to recover you have to make him explode so he lives past 120 like every stock
