The term "gaslighting" is based on a 1938 play called Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton. It was then turned into a movie in 1944. The plot follows a woman who marries a cruel man intent on psychologically terrorizing her. He does this by dimming the gas lanterns and then denying it, essentially denying her reality. He also hides things from her and denies it, even accusing her of stealing them.
