38spl +p is the lowest caliber I’d carry. I’ve been considering the 32h&r mag though with that ultimate carry jframe, but more than likely if I end up upgrading my 642 I’ll probably stick to 38.

Good video, however one thing that was not discussed was selection of carry ammo. Within the various calibers, they do not all perform the same.

I remember an article from a *LONG* time ago by Mas Ayoob on the best carry gun. After writing about the pros and cons of what makes the "best carry gun" he summed up with something like "The inferior gun you have is far superior to the gun sitting at home in a drawer." His conclusion was that the best gun to carry is the one you _WILL_ carry.

I’m a retired LEO of 30 years and a past firearms instructor and I carry my weapon 24-7 and my wife wanted to carry one and she tried and tried and tried with a 9 mm but because of her thumbs or wrist being week she had a very very difficult time to rack the slide so I’ll try her with a 38 snub nose And she just didn’t like the recoil so I got her a Ruger SR 22 with a 12 round magazine and she shoots it now without any problem and has good groupings and feels better with it. I also purchased the CCI stinger 22 hollow points for her to carry for self-defense.

I am a retired LEO and have opted away from the 9mm I used to carry, not necessarily due to the calibre. I live in a hot humid weather state and one thing I was constantly fighting was sweat rusting my 9mm. I found a weapon that works well for me in several categories. I carry a Kel-Tec PMR-30 a 22 magnum with a 30 round magazine. It has high visibility sights, has a composite frame that resists rust, is highly accurate, points naturally, conceals fantastically in shorts and a t-shirt, and is light in weight. And with 30 rounds, I can put multiple rounds on target very quickly. It may not have the single knock down of a single larger round, but I don't need to have extra magazines on my person to feel safe. And the bark and flash from the barrel is also impressive as a deterrant for the bad guys to stick around. It checks a lot of boxes for me personally.

The great Paul Harrell said he normally carries a micro pistol (Beretta) or a J frame because of program compliance. I carry a pocket pistol 90% of the time. Really it comes down to carrying the gun that checks your boxes. For most of us, cost is an issue. "Oh, but can you put a price on your security?" Yes, actually, it's the amount you can REASONABLY part with at the time you are purchasing a gun. Ain't no point in buying "the best" gun if you can't even afford a box of ammo to go with it, good holster, and extra mags, much less train regularly. I would say, though, if a significantly better gun is available for $100 more, yes, spring for it. I was originally looking at a Hi Point C9, but I noticed an Astra A-100 in .40S&W for $100 more, and bought it. Fast forward almost 6 years, and I've trained like hell with it, and I've saved up enough to get a nice upgrade, maybe something like a Sig P226 Legion. I've tried those itty-bitty guns, and would rather have the full size service pistol. Then again, I'm a freakin' 6'4" giant, so it's pretty easy for me to conceal a full size gun. If all you can afford, or reasonably carry, is a little .380, by all means, carry it, and train with it. If you're old and have arthritis, maybe a Ruger MkIV 22/45 Tactical Lite is the gun for you. My dad is 79, arthritis in his hands, but he can operate my MkIV with ease (Lite version is about 10 oz lighter, which helps). Considering how cheap it is to train on .22LR, your shot placement should be pretty dang good with a .22LR. Plug a baddie in the eye sockets, and he'll likely be dead before he hits the ground. Even if the skull deflects the round, you probably just took all the fight out of him. Certainly better than cowering unarmed, pissing yourself and pleading for mercy that won't be granted. Train, train, train. Practice makes perfection, not Glock.

A friend carried a 32ACP (WWII bring back) Walther PPK as his backup gun (yes, he was cop). During a serious fight with four men back in the 80's, he lost his primary gun and got hold of his PPK. He wounded (not killed as both survived) his assailants, retrieved his primary weapon and killed his third attacker. The fourth man ran, they caught him eventually in another state. It's what's is your hand, not what you wish you had that wins the day.

I saw a video on KZbin many years ago. It was made by a former homicide detective from the city of Chicago. He was making this video to settle the age old dispute of how much stopping power do you really need. Being a homicide detective in Chicago gave him access to a century of forensic evidence for every shooting in Chicago. So he collated all of the data and put it on a graph to show his findings. What the graph showed is that with 2 exceptions, there is no statistical advantage of any round over the other. He said that you should shoot what you feel comfortable with. The two outliers were .22 being significantly less effective than other rounds, and 12 gauge shotguns being significantly more lethal than everything else.

What if she is home alone and something is happening that needs to be handled with a gun. She might not get the 12gauge I don't realisticly think that she can fire more than 1 round of that. I have a lot of guns because I teach "Never shot a gun before" people how to shoot. I start with a .22lr single shot rifle, then a bolt action, then a semi auto. This teaches not only "hey, I don't have to be scared of this thing" but also the different actions. Then they get the .22lr pistol (Ruger Mk II, the same pistol I learned on) and then a different .22lr (a walther PPK/s in .22lr) so I can make the next one, the Walther PPK/S in .380acp, which leads to the 1911 in .380acp, so you can clearly compare how different guns in the same caliber feel slightly differently when shot. a 1911 in .45ACP, then there's the beretta 92 and the Glock 17, 19, 26, 34, and 43 so you can see some real differences in how what is essentially the same gun, just different sizes of it, controls how you shoot. The AR-15 and the .35 rem deer rifle, the then .410 shotgun, 20 gauge, 16 gauge, and finally the 12gauge. (really need to get me a 10 gauge too one of these days) 'Course, we also have "class time" before we get to the range, so I can explain why we use the terminology that we use, and why "magazine" and "clip" aren't as interchangeable as they are in the movies. Why there's a difference between "Charging a magazine" and "loading a pistol." (to prevent accidents, btw) When I say "Load" there's only one thing that I can possibly mean because that's the only time I use that word, and that's when I'm telling you to take rounds of ammunition and put them in the firearm. I show them "This is a bullet. This is the casing. This is the primer. This is gunpowder. There's lots of different kinds of gunpowder, including black powder, but we haven't used blackpowder since the start of the Civil War, and even today when people go "black powder shooting" they aren't using black powder, but a more modern, less acidic, less smoky substitute (pyrodex or similar, but it's still nitrocellulose). I teach people to aim, the same way my grandfather taught me, Point shooting. (if I can win a state championship at 16 vs life long shooters, pretty sure the method is sound.)

Have been a CCW holder in CA for 10 years or so. Been through several guns until I found favorites to carry. The point is, I look at 2 issues. First, how effective is the caliber. Second, how loud is it. I always have my .380 on me. And half the time I also have my SIG .45 auto as well. I'm a big guy so both are comfortable on my belt. The .380, as it is small and powerful enough for up close and personal. The .45 for more distance or area, e.g. a movie theater or restaurant. AND, although my favorite gun is my S&W 357 Magnum, I refuse to have tinnitus the rest of my life, whether or not punsters think it is better to have ear damage than to be dead. The .45 has far less acoustic energy than a 357, and will not permanently harm me OR the poor bystander whom I have no right to so negatively impact their lives. I do keep some earplugs in my shirt pocket, and on certain occasions will carry the 357 instead of the .45

Have tried that “give away a gun” technique with my family. So far they’ve passed on the opportunity. Besides most likely takers are son and brother-in-law who live in another state. My understanding is that in order to be legal I need to get gun to FFL in their state, who will facilitate transfer. Either I pay a local FFL to ship or I carry it up when I visit. Hassle prevents simple hand over and FFL cost cut into financial benefit versus just buying them same model from dealer there.

I have the shortest barrel and missed the most. Also, "missed" wasn't wild shots I just bearly missing the metal targets. But everyone with compact to full frames had less trouble hitting. Also! They have larger mags. PPS largest mag only holds 8 rounds. I love my gun but 6 years ago the options were not as mush as now

There's no such thing as too small. .22's, .25's, and 380's have been used for a century and perhaps over, for self defense. There's many a grave filled with attackers who came up against these calibers and lost. i carry a Baby Browning in my shirt pocket. A friend of mine back in the day carried one in the top of his boot.

FBI stats say this. 82% of fights over without firing, just showing a gun. Then the rest 18% of the fights takes 3-10 seconds, 3-5 shots, within 10 feet. Thats why im not for all this 10-15 craze etc. 6+1 to 7+1 would do. Prefer semi auto for quick follow ups, 380acp and up.

If it can send lead towards the target with relative accuracy, its good enough for self defense. You don't always need a 152mm howitzer or a 600mm unguided rocket propelled fuel rocket, sometimes a pocket pistol is enough to humble a threat.

My concern with this reasoning is how they came up with the worse case scenario and how it's used. So basically the worst case scenario is having to weak of a gun. I don't think that's true. I could come up with other ones, like someone grabbing your gun (a gun retention situation) or being in a borderline situation where deadly force might be or not be justified. The gun is only a tool, but sometimes not the right tool, so having a more powerful one or more of them isn't always a solution.

@@TangomanX2008you should be training how to defend yourself without the gun too. I came up in the rough hoods of Memphis and Vegas. I had no choice but to learn long before I was in the military. But people that don’t grow up in rough areas still need to learn. Life is totally random, no amount of forethought can account for everything, that random encounter. In most places crime isn’t just in the hood, it can be anywhere. Being afraid of prosecution is not going to help your loved ones.

Tell me I'm wrong, but I'm betting any caliber to the head is more than likely going to allow you to get away. I've been shooting for 50 years, recoil is a non-issue. This from someone who just bought a Seacamp .32ACP. The one you have is the best one for a situation because the alternative sucks. Just get over the idea you can be stupid and go places and put yourself in situations you should not just because you are carrying. Forget you have it..until you need it. My biggest worry isn't whether it will stop the perp but where is it going to go when it leaves the perp. I also live in a less populated area where 4 legs are plentiful. I carry an NAA in 22 mag when I go to the big city and pray I will never have to use it, but chances are the one on the receiving end is going to have to get the varmint copper particles removed by a surgeon.
