On long drives I fill up at about half. Too many times I’ve found myself on long lonely roads with most of the few stations closed for the night. With half a tank I can go a hundred miles to next station and still “nope” off for next station. I don’t use the take turns guarding the car approach. My solution as an over the hill female who isn't even 5', is to ALWAYS bring one or more of my trained imported German Shepherds with me. They are fully trained and wouldn't hesitate to stop someone attempting to harm me, I always leave the window near the pump down. They won't react unless I give them a command so I feel safe when my husband isn't around. I trained a dog for each of my children as well to keep watch over them.

I'm a 58 yr old single woman n I worry about this especially as I get even older, which seems to be happening fast lol. Right now I'm prudent n don't feel a need to go to bank ATM or get gas with anyone tagging along but that could change. But anyone who has a spouse or significant other or grown kids should really consider making it a habit to do these things on a day they are with others. Why make yourself more of a potential victim.
@gsdmom11942 ай бұрын
@@brandyk I agree. My husband usually does these things. However, on occasion, when I do need to go somewhere, I always take one of my dogs. They are sound so I can take them in public and children or strangers can pet them but if I give a command or I start feeling extremely stressed, they will pick up on my changes and pay close attention. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get your adult kids to believe you about the world being a dangerous place. Push to hard on the independent ones and you make it worse. All I can do now is pray we taught them to use common sense.

I always roll up the windows, lock my car doors and go inside to pay for my gas. I do this for two reasons: 1) I do not trust the gas pump credit card readers and 2) some credit cards withhold much more money on my credit card when paying at the pump. Going inside finalizes the sale at the final amount I say. Ten dollars is just ten dollars and nothing more is withheld. When I return to the car to begin filling the tank, I keep my hand on the gas nozzle because I could use it as a weapon if someone tries to attack me. Upon filling my tank, I use my key to open the driver door only; I never carry a key fob. Once inside my car again, I lock the door as I start my car. After I pull away and while driving I then open all the windows.

I'm old enough to remember before there were self-service gas stations and gas attendants would fill you tank and even wash your windows (and even longer ago they would check the air pressure in your tires if you asked). They would take your money/cash and give you change, or use your card. One of the very few states where attendants still fill your tank is Oregon. (It may be the only one.) Most of them will only take cards and do the transaction in front of you. (If you pay cash, you usually have to go inside and pay so the attendant stays safe.) Having gas attendants prevents you from getting out of your car, staying safer and having something bad happen like this video addressed. Also, it keeps more people employed. I don't go inside the store, I'm ususally prepared with water, snacks and pain meds (for headaches), this way I don't have to be a victim of circumstance in the event they rob the place. I also treat my 1/4 tank as empty and get gas right away, if not you will get too low and may end up in a less desirable neighborhood trying to find a gas station. Be watching for traffic that suddenly turns into the station and drives toward you. Or stops and backs up, or makes a U turn. A c-store clerk may be texting her BF while you are filling up. Bank tellers have done that, vectoring in their bf's on people. Don't fill up within walking distance of trashy motels, wiggle the card reader on the pump if you do.

I was in a Walmart parking lot putting things in the back hatch of my car. A lady walked up to me a from behind and sort of startled me, saying she was looking for money for gas to get her husband to dialysis. I looked over and saw a man sitting in this low end pickup truck watching. I said, "Oh sure, I was a dialysis nurse for years!" She had a funny look on her face like maybe she was lying, who knows. But I gave her a $5 bill and she mumbled but didn't act real appreicative. If she had been, I would have given her $5 more I had decided. Anyhow, point is don't turn your back in a public space like a parking lot.

That $5 probably went into the till at a liquor store. I was putting my groceries into my trunk at Walmart one day when a woman drove up, 7:31 rolled down her window and asked for some money. I told her that her car was at least 20 years newer than mine so she should be giving ME money. She quickly drove away. My car is a 1997 Toyota.

Those grocery stores that have gas stations where you can get gas at night when no one is around is also a big no! I was very low on gas and pulled into one and out of the corner of my eye could see a van parked way back in the corner so I got back in my car and as I was driving off saw a creepy man just sitting there as though he was just waiting for his next victim!

All excellent points. Re the auto-locking programming choices....my car came with the setting that when I put it Park, all the doors unlocked. I changed that to none of the doors unlocking. Then I changed the passenger door to unlock all four doors when I touch the handle because I load everything from the passenger side. Now you've made me wonder if I'm sitting at a red light safely locked inside my car, if ANYONE walking up would be able to unlock the passenger door by touch. I've got to pull the car out of the garage and practice, if it does, I'm changing the programming. Thanks again for the tips.

Danger is everywhere! We must have a plan anywhere you go. I've read a lot of true stories. A female senior was walking to her car after she went shopping at Target she watched her surroundings as she was walking toward her car. She was going to unlock her car and a guy starts running toward her that she kept an eye on and was going to grab her purse. She immediately pressed her wrist safety alarm button and it sounded off very loud and the guy ran away empty-handed. Glad she was safe. Her plan worked. So, it's important to buy a wrist alarm also which I have. I also have my key in my hand. If, I see danger coming while I'm gasing up I will use my key fob Panic button or alarm button To sound off More then likely danger will run away if it were to happen. I always walk around while my car is fueling up and look who is near or at a distance. After car is fueled I walk around my car to make sure someone is not ducking down outside on passenger side once I unlock my doors to get in. If my surroundings are not safe I will walk inside the gas station and get an employee to walk me to my car to unlock and leave. Danger Is In Every City. Drugs, hunger and homelessness are everywhere. Stay safe Be alert! Even if a person asks for change. I say I don't have a job I'm using my daughter's car I'm still looking for a job.

I keep another full-size pistol behind the front seat and a large knife. - I would take the family Doberman when he could fit in the back seat roll-down window at the pump. - as older adult today, I drive nondescript vehicles and out a car collection hobby.

I always keep my car locked when in and out of my car. When I stop my car , I have my car programmed to open only the driver side door. I also my keys hooked to my body at all times even when driving. I had someone follow me home but I didn’t go home. Instead, my instinct was to pick a block and drive around the block yielding at stop signs until the police arrived. I was on the phone with 911 the entire time. I wasn’t stopping and I wasn’t going anywhere I could get stuck. I stayed in town and drove around the block. Eventually, the road rager left the scene and the police hadn’t arrived yet. I was able to go safely home without incident. Kept my car in motion to avoid being shot, carjacked, kidnapped or assaulted. It was an automatic response to my situation. I am situationally aware at all times and I always have an escape route no matter where I am in the moment. This all comes naturally to me. I had to keep myself safe and alive from 5 years to my 50 years! When you live like this, you are equipped to survive almost anything.

My legs are paralyzed. I have my CCW. My elderly mom is my medical caretaker and transportation in her car. When she gets out to pump gas, I remind her to pay attention to her surroundings (to the point she replies, "I know, and always do"). That being stated, I have my handguns under my thigh, not in my belt holster and using mirrors and what little ability to turn my head I watch for suspicious persons or other vehicles nearby. In my state, defending an occupied car and/or any form of carjacking is considered the same as defending your home. Although I am on defense, even when Mom is pumping gas, we lock all the doors, except the driver's door (her door), so nobody can jump into the back (four door vehicle). Mom leaves her purse with me, along with the keys to the vehicle. When she is at the pump, she's always looking up and around and does not stand motionless like a mannequin. It's clear to anyone watching that she is aware of everyone around. She won't make idyl conversation with others who are pumping gas (distraction) and if the receipt is jammed and she gets the "go inside to see clerk" message, she will simply not get the receipt for that filling (she itemizes every penny spent that is taxed to write off on taxes, so her annual locker filled with receipts has one less receipt in it). She's not going to walk into a gas station, leaving too much distance between her and the vehicle. The main thing is situational awareness, as not everyone has an armed passenger do aid in defending from an attack, premade plans, practicing those plans... and use your card, not cash.
