I always love it when I’m working with a horse and they are showing signs of relaxation. If we are working on something new I wait until I see those signs before trying it again or heading onto something else. Makes it a lot better for them.

When i stand beside my horse. Maybe where the girth would go or a little bit back, and put my arm around her back so my hand is on her other side of her ribs she pins her ears back and looks at me. She doesn't get ridden shes maybe about 8years old and shes in VERY light work. Could that be a problem that I need the vet to check out? Could it be ulcers? Edit: thank you guys for your replies, I'll ask my parents if we can get the vet to check her out.

I am not a vet or anything like that but I do have 3 horses that are all completely different. I would get it checked out just in case.

I would get her checked. She could have a sore spot around her ribs, could be an ulcer or she just doesn’t like being touched there. Obviously you know your horse way better than I do but it’s wise to get them vetted if you have a concern about their health.

My big guy will do this, BUT, we know the cause. He is a schoolmaster and is literally the most experienced gentle guy ever!!! Someone else was riding him and they accidently did his girth up too tight & pinched his skin. That was 10 years ago & he still hates this area being touched & he reacts just as your mare does, sometimes he has even warned people off with his teeth!! He only accepts and allows me and one friend to tack him up now. It could be caused by bad experience, but always check with your vet just in case. Good luck & I hope your girl sorted out!
