I thought I wanted aesthetics. I had diamond parts. Then I met Yannie and remembered why I wanted locs to begin with: freedom. My journey is spiritual and my locs reflect my freedom. They are fuzzy, lumpy, healthy and protected. 🙏🏼

The health of my hair is definitely my priority.... "Sis worry about the body, just take of that...Jimmy & I will handle the hair" ....is truly a spoken blessing & her hair is beautiful!

Health…I still have my original parts, my locs are thin and when freshly ‘done’, I look ‘scalpy’ but I get compliments on my hair because its HEALTHY. I am almost 4 years loc’d and no longer care about the parts, the fact that my scalp shows in places and that my locs are thin. I realize that all of our hair is different. No two heads of locs are the same. My locs are unique to me and I love them with all their HEALTHY imperfections!! ❤

OMG Jimmy and you have done wonders for her hair. A person would never notice that she had health issues that has caused hair damage.I pray that God would continue to Bless her and you in the healing journey. Be Bless.

Mine was about both. I was always wearing faux locs so I just decided to loc my hair. My locs started thinning so I started to watching your videos and stopping washing my locs so much, stopped using 50 different oils and products, stop manipulating it so much. My hair has never been so healthy. My loc stylist begs me to style my hair but I tell her I will wait for my locs to get longer and healthier before I style it. 😅

I prefer to focus on my hair health instead of obsessing over aesthetics or worrying about loose hairs showing. It brings authenticity to my locs having a lot of imperfections like lumps and bumps.

My journey is definitely about health. I wait a minimum of 3 months between retwists. I don’t style my hair. I do love beads and jewelry in my hair which I didn’t start until year two, (I’m four years in), I make sure they are light weight and keep them towards the ends of my locs.💛

Hi Yanni I am from South Africa and honestly the first six months I focused on the neatness a lot and I manipulated my locs a lot to a point that some of my locs thinned out and fell out ,but after watching your videos I learned that heath matters more than anything else and I am very thankful for your youtube channel and your advices because I am now 3 yeas loc'd and my locs are at their healthiest form.I stopped styling and I see the beautiful results. Been a fan of your video almost 2 and a half years now and I am very grateful. I will keep on following your avdices because they helped me a lot. Stay blessed Queen ♥

My daughter has autism and when she was younger doing her hair caused GREAT emotional stress. It would often take me a week to do her hair because of her struggle with combs/brushes (no matter how gentle I was), washing her hair (being wet caused her stress), anything & everything haircare related. I finally made the decision to loc her hair when she was in second grade. I stressed over the decision but by far it was the BEST decision I could have made for her anxiety & emotional well-being. She's 15 now. She has beautiful fuzzy, "no comb" hair. Her locs are thick and down to her waist. She loves her hair now and the stress has been minimized greatly. We are "Team Disrespectful"...Thanks Yanni for that term. 🙏🏾

Health should be first on anyone’s mind in my opinion. The aesthetics come with having a unique crown. No two sets of locs should be the same! ☮️

I just started my journey in March and I am in LOVE with my hair. It hasn't fully locd yet of course, but im looking forward to the day when i won't have to retwist as oftne. I know I don't want freeform, but I also know i don't want to be going to my loctician every couple of months. Im excited about my journey. My hair is beautiful already and its not even locd yet

As a mom of four and an employee for such a long time making sure my hair looked presentable was always my number 1 rule. I never worried with cosmetics due to how long it seemed to take my siblings and mother to finish but I religiously took the time to do my hair so that I didn't have to turn to durags or bonnets. Now that I am mainly working with my two younger children at home, I don't need to have my locs extra neat. I do feel a little self-conscious about the way my hair looks on occasion when I am going to appointments for myself or my children, but at the end of the day, I am unapologetic when it comes to my physical appearance. God made me just right the way I am, and as long as I am of sound mind, I will not try to enhance it or tweak it to meet the approval of people who can't be satisfied. Optimal health is my motivation from now on.

Honestly Yannie, When I started my locs 5 years ago June 6th I knew nothing about how to care for them and I saw others with styles etc and I thought that's what I needed to do. Thank God I came across your videos very early in my journey! Long story short, I never got a style or used products. I embrace the fuzzies and my locs are healthy and beautiful..... and I do my own hair. I owe it All to youuuu! Thank you so Much! 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤

When I first started my journey in 2021, it was definitely the aesthetics. I made sure to come in every two weeks to keep the frizz away. I stopped going to the shops a year later after finding out how much buildup was left in my hair from the excessive gel, some locs were starting to thin, and feeling pressure from the workplace to have my hair neat. Since then, I stopped styling and pulling my hair and just let it be. It taught me to accept myself and it’s been a liberating experience. There are some days where I feel like I should style it like I used to, and then I snap back into reality and realize that i need to give myself and my hair some more love. At this point in my loc journey, I’m transitioning more into the health perspective of my hair, and it’s continuing to teach me A LOT about myself. My view on retwisting has now changed to understanding what my hair needs from me instead of what does society expects of my hair to look like. So I’ve retwisted my locs every other month now, and I use hair products specifically for promoting healthy locs. The lady’s hair in the video is beautiful. I hope to come to your shop someday, your advice has helped a lot in my journey. ❤

I'm definitely about the health of my hair. Started locs, and a lot was being done to it until about a year before chancing on your videos and I've never regretted finding you. I'm almost 7yrs into my loc journey, less manipulation and I'm loving it each day. Thank you Yannie and Jimmy

Wow Yanni! You were speaking about the 12 Tribes of Israel, they are the 12 sons of Jacob, and yes, they still exist even today!!! God has not forgotten them, even if they have forgotten some things about themselves!!! It is written and it will come back to remembrance! The health is above all, scripture says we are a peculiar people, not like anyone else. Our crown is included in that!!

When I started I liked my hair neat aaallllll the time. As soon as I saw the tiniest bot of frizz I was in the mirror with some gel. I got it interlocked every 2 months. I got tired of my scalped being yanked from that. I saw one of your videos, and it confirmed what I was already feeling and thinking. I stopped using gel and stopped getting interlocked. I started taking care of my Crown myself, and my scalp and locs have thanked me for it 😅. Now I wash my locs whenever and use one oil BCO on my scalp. I usually oil my scalp when I wash my locs. My locs are to my thighs, and they are happy and healthy, not dirty and smelly. These are not product filled, so they are not heavy.

I am about health. I don't care about parts or style. This is a lifestyle for me. My hair is thin and I embrace the fuzz. I retwist every 3-4 months. I would love to transition to no retwisting at all, but not sure how to take care of the new growth. I'm afraid my hair will thin out too much.

Health for me. I was getting relaxers in my hair for 10 years. Then suddenly, I was just fed up with it. Those chemical burns hurt! Eventually, I decided to grow locs. With Yanni's guidance, I've been taking care of my barely tameable locs. Been at it for almost 20 years and haven't looked back.

Hello from the UK! When I first started my locs, I think I was about both but since finding you about 2 years in (6 years now) I’ve been about the health of my locs. It’s been interesting for me cause most of the ladies my age with locs are about the aesthetics. I don’t do all those fancy styles, most I’ll do is basic two strand twists twice a year max and I try to make sure it’s not tight at my scalp. I have dyed before but I used the no ammonia cream of nature. I have never and will never touch bleach. My parts are different shapes/sizes and I go 3-4 months between maintenance. I have no issues with my hair not looking perfectly ‘manicured’ for the exact reason you said, cause I know in the long run my locs, scalp and hairline will thank me 😌

Blessings...thank you 4 posting this video. I am definitely in it for the health. I've bn following you for 3yrs and I love my locs less is more. I have thyroid issues and I was aware of possible hair loss. However I do love color I redo my blonde abt every 18 months, I don't do ANY TENSION STYLES....Thanx Yannie for sharing your knowledge...Joy of Wadmalaw Island, S.C.

I am in my 40s now and health is primary for me. But this is my 3rd time. I would take breaks with natural hair in between the first time for spiritual reasons, the second time was for health. My stylist interlocked me. It was horrible. The first two times I had my hair in locs I was more focused on aesthetics as I was younger and less informed, but this time my third time starting them I am looking a healing my whole self, including my scalp and hair.

Question: when you say that, you work with people that don’t “style” their hair. I’m curious to know what that means exactly. Do you mean that they don’t do the tight professional styles that the locations do? I’m assuming that it’s OK to do a ponytail for work here and there and put it up on your own, something simple that you can take down or keeping your lock covered. But when I just try to wear my hair out without at least putting it in a ponytail or something. It drives me crazy. But I don’t want to wear headwrap all the time.

I would say it's about both especially in American culture because of how our country operates. I don't think a person have to choose between the two but both can coexist.
