George's comments at the end really struck a chord with me. I think many folks are searching for a sense of constancy and a model of perseverance in uncertain and changing conditions. In this sense, AtoA is such a strong metaphor for continuing to be driven by passion, yet also yielding and flexible in the face of change.

Watching the house roof go together was just.... it brought me to tears. It is SO beautiful! The craftsmanship is absolutely perfect. My meager skills are nothing in comparison... I spent years as a rough heavy construction carpenter where tolerances were "if it's within a quarter inch it's fine... but this has prompted me to pull out my old chisel set and take the time to sharpen them by hand, and start doing some nicer work in our old motorhome. We're refitting it to include space for our daughter, and just because I'm working with scrap materials and plywood doesn't mean I can't do nicer work. Arabella is an inspiration to everyone who sees her, as are the craftspeople working on her. I cannot thank you enough for bringing us along for this incredible journey.

The perseverance to keep going is why I can't stop watching. Been watching since before the lofting floor went down, and Lord willing, I'll be here for the launch and any content along the journey past that. Thanks for keeping on keeping on. Yeah, as George said at the end of the video, things have changed. We started with two guys building a boat and working their day jobs to afford to do this massive project while sharing it with whoever would watch. Then the channel caught on and spread, even more with the lead keel pour it took off. Now, one of our original guys is gone on to his own thing and we have seen numerous helpers come and go, experienced hands/shipwrights come and help, a pro videographer, a "host", and another shipwright. We've seen guest gatherings and plank parties. Now systems are going in and deck structures are just about ready for decking, the last of the hull planks are ready, and we are definitely past the half way point for sure. I'm wondering if there will be a bung party or if it will be just the two or three folks that are there usually. Guess we'll see. Still loving the channel, Thomas

@thomasarussellsr2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If you look around KZbin you can find many frim the next couple of generations that have the skills and gumption to get things done on their own. I just hope there are enough of them to keep the ball rolling, so to say. I am over 50 as well, and our grandparents' generation was way more productive than our parent's was and so on and so on. As service takes over for industrial as a means for gross domestic product, it seems fewer and fewer people know how to do for themselves. Those of us that do, need to pass this knowledge along to who ever will listen. Unfortunately, it seems, KZbin is the classroom of the future. Taking a young person into your shop and showing them, hands on, how to do things is a dying way to teach in this digital world. I am so happy they have Aaron there learning some skills. Maybe that will encourage some other kids to see what they can go learn hands on.

@samrodian9192 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve I love watching you use your large Stanly "Yankee" ratchet screwdriver. I've had mine since I started my Apprenticeship as a Church Organ Builder in 1970! (it was a present from my dad as I couldn't afford one lol) it looks as if yours is a little sticky and they can get gummed up. Try giving the two way helix a good sloosh with WD40 and work it up and down until totally free. Then dry it off with rags then a shop air blast, finally a few drops of light oil like 3 IN 1 into the ratchet mechanism and it will be good for another five years or so! Now I've watched all todays episode I will carry on lol. The fridge components look awesome especially the stainless steel (condensers?) and the idea of putting the tubes through with epoxy and making tapping fixings out of epoxy are very sound ideas the control panel is a great thing too, with enough options for cold water or tropical sailing. I love the fridge looks and design and the fact that it's construction is bespoke by yourself is a great testament to your design abilities Steve. Not long now until launch and much to do! See ya next week all!

Well said, George. I've been watching this channel since 2018 in far flung Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. Others have said what I want to say, but far more eloquently than I... Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio said... Not just the Spanish Main. The whole ocean ... the whole world. Wherever we want to go, we go. That's what a ship is, you know. Not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails. That's what a ship needs ... but what a ship is -- what the Arabella really is ... is freedom. Long live your freedom, Steve.

I've been following the build of Arabella since episode 40 something. I remember vividly binge watching the first few dozen episodes after I found the channel. I can't believe how far she has come and man does she look beautiful! Just try to imagine the first night that you are afloat and away from the dock. Rolling and pitching peacefully with the waves. Laying in your bunk, looking up at the ceiling and you think, "This is mine and I made this!" Yep, it took a lot of help from a ton of people but... The sense of joy and achievement will be incredible! At the same time Steve, boy oh boy there is a lot more gray in your beard then there was when you started this project! Be safe and stay healthy Arabella crew!

I like the removable divider. Having a larger refrigerator side seems like the norm in current society but when wanting to spend extended times in remote places, the freezer space is of far greater value. Like so many other things on the boat, you built it, so you know how change it as needs arise.

It's really fun to see how the boat progresses more and more and that you seem to thrive together, which is perhaps the most important thing. The refrigerator looks very nice but a small detail like that you install wooden moldings. Wood in cold and humid environments easily gets dirty with the accumulation of bacteria and mold. Oil or varnish comes off quite easily after a while. Plastic or stainless steel as an alternative. Otherwise everything looks very nice and I am very impressed.

Having installed MANY system's as a fridge mechanic, i like to install a MOVABLE 1 " thick separator, depending on what you want to freeze and or refrigerator , that way you can change the volume, i.e. you catch a big fish and are low on fresh refrigerated food, so more freezer space is needed. the separator is tight against the side's holding it in place.
