Why would anyone dislike this video. Phillip goes out of his way to take the guess work in buying an amp for everyone. Who does that? Phil you're a class act, this was a huge video for me as I wondered this myself. I have yet to buy an amp for my Home Studio but now the picture has become clear. Off to watch part 2.

Very insightful. I've been playing a 20 watts Engl Ironball head and an Engl 2x12 cab for two years now. I never even have the master half way up on stage. In rehearsals, I usually have to back it down to about 9 o'clock and it still cuts through like a charm. I'm playing mostly heavy rock, by the way. So the drummers I'm playing with hit hard.

Damon Rothermel My lead player uses a mustang amp 4 I think, it is a solid state I'm sure. I got a customized crate flexwave w angled 4x12s, put 2 British speakers and 2 regular celestions also made it so it can split channels and play 2 12s on either side so I can totally change the amp side to side or all 4 12s at a time. Thanks to my instrument tech, if I lost that guy my life would suck lol.

I have the mustang V. v1 it would be overkill but also have superchamp Xd dialed in at basic levels it will roar clean just gotta tweak with looper playing while standing as far back as you can . Although mustang V could double as a pa for drums and keyboards because of stereo input and stereo speaker output

Here’s the issue. When the guitar takes off by itself, the sound is clear. But,when the drums kick in, you can here the compression on video camera take over. The sound volume drops and turns very muddy. It probably didn’t do that live, but it did on the recording.

I always see comments Like " it works for club gigs but you might want something larger for out door gigs" why ? no ones ever heard of monitors ! most national acts don't even have live amps on stage- I've opened for lots of them. Been playing a long time and have done many large outdoor shows. Have never needed more than a small combo amp.

In 1983 I went on the road with a 100 watt Half Stack. We had a sound tech that told me, "That's too loud. If you turn it down I can get you in the mains."Turn down? Nah, but I'm accomodating guy, so I set up a 35 watt Vibrolux. "Too loud."So I borrowed a 25 watt Carvin combo. "Still too loud."By now I was getting frustrated and as an attempt at malicious compliance, put the mic on a 15 watt Squier practice amp. "Perfect!"It was a revelation. I bought a 15 watt Marshall Studio 15 and have played it before huge audiences. By the way, that sound tech now mixes FOH for Blake Shelton.

@@hino-ucanada4506 PAs weren't even a thing that handled guitars at the time Townshend and Hendrix played, so of course they needed all those 100w heads and 4x12 stacks so they'd still be heard clearly and with a pretty clean signal across hundreds of meters from the huge venues and festivals they were playing. By today's needs and standards, that's fairly obsolete and pedantic. You'd also sound more stale and boring with a 100w head up to 1-2 on the master volume than a cranked 15/20w small valve head

In 1981, I bought a Music Man 100 RD amp. Tiny little thing. 100 watss, one 12" EV 12 L speaker. Weighs a TON. It's the ONLY amp I've had since. Through all the gigs in Chicago playing covers, to my original band in Austin, Texas. For 36 years.... thats it. Time and again I would be laughed at as I wheeled my little amp in front Marshall Stacks during the 80's metal years only to see the look of astonishment after our set at how LOUD and clear and awesome that little amp was. The only effect I used was a Whammy 2 pedal for a few years, otherwise, straight in. I still use this amp to this day in my cover band. All those bands with the giant stacks got rid of them now and play these little amps. Great work Phillip, I really enjoy your posts!

For rock and distorted tones, most 20 watt tube amps are capable of drowning out a drummer, but for strictly clean playing, it just may not be loud enough for a full band. Just my experience.

+Lothar ThirtyFour This is one of the big questions. We are going to do a clean shout out. If you have some suggestions of ones you think may or may not make it. Let me know. I have a rough idea of some of the ones I am going to use. But input is welcome. Thank you for watching and posting.
@lothar34

No suggestions really, I love the channel. I just wanted to point that out about clean tones, because I see so many people ask the question in various forums and someone will answer with something like "oh yeah- 10 watts will keep up w/ a drummer no problem". But the first guy didn't specify what style he plays and the 2nd guy didn't ask. Everyone just assumes rock/metal, but a clean country or jazz guy probably isn't going to be able to turn 10-20 watts up loud enough (while remaining clean) to be heard in a mix.

@lawrencegenereux8567
@lawrencegenereux8567 6 жыл бұрын
Oscar Bird Music If you need to keep it clean, it won't help. The power amplifier in the amp and the efficiency of the speaker system are the limiting factors when dealing with clean tones. Boosting the signal in the effects loop will only get you into distortion at a lower preamp setting.

I have used an Orange Micro Terror and a MusicMan HD 150 on low power to play live with a band. We always mic'd it anyways. I was always able to hear my amps on stage. They were even run through the monitors. I used 1x12 cabs, I play in stereo. I sometimes used an Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum and the Orange Micro Terror. They were fine as well. Now, I run through a stereo pair of Orange Micro Terrors with either my stereo 4 x12 or pair of 1x12 cabs. It is plenty loud. I even have the volumes of the overdrive section of my pedal board attenuated with a volume box. I do not really have to crank the amps to hard to get plenty of volume. The Orange Micro Terrors are no joke.

The loudness is determined by the speaker(s) as much as the amp. Also the type of music and the size of the club. Speaker efficiency is rated in db per one watt input measured at one meter. 100 dbw is high efficiency, 90 is low. Larger speakers tend to be more efficient and multiple speakers are more efficient than singles. Each 10db requires ten times the power. So going from a 90 dbw speaker to 100 dbw is like going from 10 watts to 100 watts. Clean takes more rated power than dirt because amps can put out more power at the cost of distortion. That is why tube and solid state watts aren't equivalent. Tubes sound much better than ss when driven into distortion so this is done intentionally, but not so much when playing clean.The drop-off in volume with distance from the speaker depends on how reverberant the room is, how high the ceiling, how many bodies, etc. I'll see if I can get some info on that. But 15 tube watts with the right cab should be loud enough for most clubs.

Yeah, a 15 watt tube amp driven to clipping is probably outputting nearly 30 watts. A 15 watt solid state amp sounds nasty when clipping so it is driven to its maximum clean capacity and given an overdriven guitar effect instead, producing only its rated 15 watts or less.
@jessebfly
@jessebfly 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I use mostly all 18w amps or less....I'm currently digging just using a tweed deluxe these days with a mild overdrive basically set to unity to give it a slight boost. Plenty of volume - especially mic'd up, but man the tone. The biggest crime is convincing young, new guitar players to buy big wattage amps. Most players are clueless on how to use gear, and when they finally get a gig the band is so f'n loud it drives the customers out the door! As venues keep drying up and being replaced by an ipod or a DJ, we players must spread the gospel on lower stage volume to preserve live music. It makes you a better player as well. AMEN! :)

Marshalls are known for punching through a band mix very well, this is because they have a strong midrange (the most important range for a guitar), and cut out a lot of lower bass to prevent it from sounding muddy. That way it stays punchy. That can really make the difference when you're pushing them to the limit. Marshall do have very specific classic tone, you either love it or hate it. I also really liked the Krank, sounds quite modern, but nice and balanced. 15-20 watts of tube power should be enough rehearsal without mic-ed amps, as long as you dont depend too much on pristine cleans or very bass heavy metal sounds. Speaker efficiency and number of speakers also make a big difference. If you go from 1 inefficient speaker to 2 efficient speakers you might end up gaining 8-12dB, which is a LOT!

I liked this but I would have liked a brief 30 second close up of the amp with a little over view of it's build. I have a Fender Band Master and a 50 watt Marshall and I have two smaller hand made amps one about 20 watts and a 15 watt 6V6 built into a old 1950s Carvin 1 X12 combo and with pedals the little amps are very usable for gigs. This was very nice pretty much real world a crowd might make some difference because when you get bodies in the room that absorbs quite a bit of sound. Now I must watch the second one. Great Job

It was solid state, which surprised me, but when I drive a bridge humbucker through an old Metal Zone 2, using only the gain and no distortion, it sounded very good. It was loud enough for a large living room. I usually play bass, and need more wattage and a cleaner sound.

Great video! The Marshall was definitely my favorite. Would be interesting to see how the Jet City 20/22H would stack up. I have the 22H and it is LOUD.

I thought the little Peavey cut through the mix well and the guitarist got a good sound out of it.I believe the Marshall given the description,is potentially the best amp of the bunch but I don't feel like it was shown in it's best light in this vid. To my ears it had too much of this obnoxious upper midrange frequency happening. The Boogie is another potential winner but in this instance it sounded too flabby in the low end.

I like the Marshall but $2000. Many years ago I had a Highwatt Bull Dog with one 12 that sounded great. I use to just mic it and run thru the sound board. The Orange Micro Terror or Dark does ok and is a easy small back up amp to pack for gigs, and only around $250 with a small cabinet. Nice video 🎸🎶

@4:21 it's the EL84's . I played lots of bars and clubs in the early 90's thru around'01 , 200 to 1500 people with a Mesa Studio 22 and then later with a Mesa Subway Rocket 25 watt. Both amps had EL84 , they were never blazing loud but always cut thru with a band and sounded good . Those 25 watt tube amps also sound great thru a 4x12 marshall slant cab laid on its side for some L/R separation .

I had the same "Idea", was going to create a channel to test gear in actual band situations ... guess I don't need to do that anymore! Thanks Phill great video, looking forward to more!

Human volume perception is logarithmic, not linear (hence the use of log pots for volume knobs). Generally speaking, you need to increase the power output by a factor of 5-10-fold to double the perceived volume. In other words, a 50w amp will only sound twice as loud as a 5w amp. If your small amp isn't quite loud enough, check your speaker specs - you might have speakers that only produce (say) 89 dB at 1 metre for 1 watt input. Replacing them with more efficient speakers will increase the volume - every 3dB increase represents a doubling of sound intensity. Or just mic your amp through the PA.

Wow, finally some real world data on using amps in a live setting. Most local bands have to deal with exactly this kind of situation. More so if you're the opening act and have to use some of the headliners gear. No one is your friend at 2:30am and you need to lug a big Twin up a narrow flight of stairs. Small amps are the shit for a reason. More clubs need a decent monitor system so I can DI straight into the board and use my little amp as a personal monitor. Thanks Phil.

I now what players say about headroom of an amp. The extra five watts from Mesa recto 25 diffidently helped and made band sound better.

That marshall is 2 grand for a reason. As a viewer i cannot confirm volume levels, but it seemed to be the only one that cut through at the benchmark ~20 watts within a band scenario. This coming from a proud owner of a recto 25, mark V 25 and mini recto mesa fanboy. Band is tight. :)

it would be really nice if you could do more vids on different practical amps in a practic or live situation ,this is how to me vids should be done on amps to give people more of what they can expect from an amp. this the best demo hands down that I've ever head from a video.

hey Phil, this is a great video series. This is how amps should be reviewed and demoed, i.e., in a band context as well. Can you PLEASE do a series just like this except with modeling amps!!
