The green engine is a Bavarian S 3/6, a pre-WW II German locomotive and carries the number (3673) of the last member of the class built in 1931. The second one has more the classic German look and resembles a DRG Class 03. Some of the Class 03 members worked in East Germany and Poland in Post WWII.

Z scale is my favorite! I do quite a bit of N too, so my area of interest is the smaller scales. I am building a 2x4 foot home layout in Z using 1 foot square wood plaques I bought in the craft department at Walmart set on a wood frame I built. It's a very light and portable setup as the plaques are only 1/8" thick not counting the borders. I have an oval of track and a Marklin beer train I ordered off eBay. My layout will feature a city scene I am working on with highly detailed paper model buildings I download and print. I get very elaborate by layering the details on the buildings and having transparent windows and interiors.

Next on TrainBoy: “I Tried T Scale”
@bow-tiedengineer44533 жыл бұрын
I was starting to make a stupid comment, getting my facts wrong. Glad I checked. Z scale wasn't the one that lined up nicely with HO and O. If you want to do Arlesdale Railway stuff, you might be better off working with N scale track, as it lines up better with track gauges for the larger railways. With the small railway on N track, the narrow gauge would run on HO, and the NWR would be O scale. I found this when I was looking into how much space would be needed to model the entire island of Sodor. (just under a mile square in O scale, if you're curious.) If you were truly mad, you could could run the Arlesdale on T, the Skarlowey on Z, and the NWR on TT, but I had never even heard of those T scales before I started looking up how big a miniature Island of Sodor would be, fitting the whole island into a third of a mile square. running the Arlesdale on Z has a similar issue, as the Skarlowey would be on TT, and the NWR would be on S. Also, you were calling the small controller the thin controller, I gotta point it out. Probably just a slip of the tong, but I have to make sure. The Arlesdale Railway is run by the small controller, the thin controller runs the Skarlowey. Anyway, whatever you chose to do, I would love to see tiny Arlesdale engines. Considering Z is half the size of TT, which would be the gauge the Arlesdale would have had in the model era of the TV series, a good looking Z model of them would really disprove the whole thing about not being able to include the small railway in the classic era due to modeling difficulty. and, speaking of, the island would come out to a mile and a quarter across in the G scale the TV series used. And to think my younger self thought there was a layout with the whole island on it in a production studio somewhere! That would be one hell of a studio! :P

I happen to bought a z scale size railway set couple months by the company name Rokuhan. I’d say it’s really nice to own a z scale train around, I was able to place it as my desktop on my table, so busy or not I have a small running railway on my table.
@OwenConcorde3 жыл бұрын
Z scale may be awesome for very tight spaces and those who want a large layout without making the same mistakes with larger scales like me and my O scale trains. I wouldn't touch N scale or Z scale because of how breakable they are, but I am more careful now than when I was younger (thanks to building non-train model kits). I actually know one of my teachers from back in middle school and one of her adult sons wanted a Z scale set (packaged in a fancy little suitcase) while he was going into college, but they were super expensive, so he ended up going with N scale. As for German trains, I think they're a nice escape from the average North American trains due to their unique designs. I was going to get deeper into British locomotives several years back, but I find the German ones are more appealing and more popular even though not as popular as North American locos.

The stages of small model railwaying. Stage 1. The N Scale phase, from here is where most people will stop and be like "yup this is how small I'm going" Stage 2. The Z Scale phase, this is the point were most people are daring thinking it can't get any smaller than this. The final stage. The T scale phase, you have by this point gone as small as you can go and, you want more but will never find any. If you are experiencing any of these and coming from anything S scale and up it will feel really foreign.

In theory, if you're comfortable with a soldering iron, you could cut the red wire on the controller and place a potentiometer in series between the controller and track, and as you turned the potentiometer, the electrical resistance will rise and the train will move slower and slower. Or you could just buy a proper controller. ;P

Tbh, the only real issue with Z scale is, that Märklin is the only company that produces anything in the way of rolling stock and tracks for it, as they've 'invented' the scale. And the problem with Märklin is, that it's, in most cases, twice as expensive as other company. I own(ed) a Märklin H0 set, and know from experience what a pain their prices are. I've checked their web site, and the cheapest loco listed there is a small passenger tender engine for 179,00€ RRP (≈ 216,00 USD), which is almost the price of a Hornby 00 LNER Pacific...
