My father in law teaches Quran and Tafseer classes and Arabic grammar classes. He has tremendous amount of respect in the community we live in. At the same time, he loves movies and dramas but watches them in the privacy of his office. He will never go to watch a newly released movie in a theater. I always wondered. Now I now why. I think the scene where he goes with the friend and then gets angry and calls him names. That scene isn't about showing that the main character stands up to wrong things. It shows that while he is being judged, he is judging others too. In the movie, almost everyone has double standards.

I watched Zindagi Tamasha’s screening in Stuttgart Germany a few months ago and I was sad that people in Pakistan couldn’t watch it and I’m overjoyed that they uploaded it on KZbin. This movie is truly reflective of our society. I remember I was in awe of the visuals. Every frame is poetically real and raw. People who got it banned in the first place are from the same lot of people portrayed in the movie. Irony!

There was nothing offensive in the story. He was a jolly person from childhood as well as a religious person who loves Prophet Muhammad PBUH. I started crying from interval till end. I could relate to his daughter too because sometimes we all struggle to understand our parents.

Loved loved loved the film. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the film and as Aamna rightly said, the so called thaikedars of Mazhab saw their own ugly reflection in the story, hence got all riled up and felt threatened by it. My heart went out to the character of Khwaja sahb and the things he went through absolutely broke my heart specially by that daughter. Uff I hated the daughter. Kudos to Sarmad And Team. Unpopular opinion, but in its current form - it is not a masterpiece, it was underwhelming. We l never know if the original version had better flow. The ban and the controversary are of course condemnable and quite sad. But I think the delay and ban increased intrigue and positive hype as well. The realism was great and the best thing about the film, along with Sik Mitran sung by Saakin which is magical. But other than that it did not invoke much emotion, didn't hook me, and offered little to no insight about what made any character tick - again I don't know if this was due to too many parts having been cut from the original. Some performances were good, but the lead was not impressive. It made no sense at all to ban it, in fact I don't think it would have been banned if that one clip wasn't in the trailer. Very stupid to create such fuss and to chop it up so that now we as audience can't consume it the way it was meant to be consumed.

I've studied film criticism and work as an entertainment journalist in London, and I have watched the film in its entirety at a festival. It's not very different from the one released on KZbin. I was underwhelmed then, and I'm underwhelmed now. It's a good film, and people should watch it, but it's not a masterpiece by any stretch of imagination.

@MShah. , exactly. I love Sarmad Khoosat's work and will always support it, but this film isn't his best work. It lacked coherence and depth. Yes, it holds a mirror to society, and it's important to showcase that, but that's the main focus of most of Sarmad's work. I also felt it was too long, and 30 minutes could have easily been omitted out.

I am not sure Amna and Hassan picked up the very pointed suggestion in the film that the lead is a naturally effeminate man - we learn he loved wearing his mum's dupatta and dancing as a child but had it beaten out of him by his father, the way he actually dances at the wedding, his grooming of his wife's hair the way girlfriends do each other's hair, his maternal attention to his wife and daughter's needs, etc. - but like many ordinary men he has stepped into the role that society expects of males. His outrage in the scene where the video walla takes him to the party and especially his words to the effect that it is the one thing he has never done all paint the picture of a man who has relinquished that innate side of him and has made a life for himself where there is enough happiness for him to get by. I found it all so deeply tragic. His love of the old films and his enjoyment of the songs is very pure and devoid of lustful gazing and ogling. He connects with the female singers/actresses in a feminine way. All of his househusband duties are performed naturally, he serves his wife with humility and good cheer and so on and so forth. Surely I did not imagine these little hints and suggestions. I don't want to bring Sarmad Khoosat into it but he himself is very intriguing in terms of his own energies and he has crafted this with a lot of sensitivity. I believe his story still stands as it is bit if you read this narrative into it there is an even deeper layer to the tragedy. Some poor guy who is contentedly trundling along in life having suppressed his true self and in an unguarded moment unleashing a storm that shakes the foundation of his little world. Those nonverbal moments with the eunuchs were also very telling. The kindness he bestows upon them probably stems from an understanding of the misery he has narrowly escaped through the turn his life has taken.

Hassan, regarding your view that such films'content should be released on OTT rather than in theaters will be a serious blow to film makers, as they will need a completely different arrangement for funding and marketing. Also, right now OTT is flooded with controversial content that is easily available all over the world incl. Pakistan and people are avidly watching ' consuming it. This is the height of hypocrisy! As if watching in the theaters is the only way you can corrupt people.

All this movie talks about is that our idea of honour as a society is so fragile that it holds no room for any mistake. Makes us understand why people go so crazy to protect honour, because for many people when you lose it, there is nothing lift to live for. This movie is precious, please promote this. I was not able to pay on account directly but I paid for the vimeo director's cut to do my part to contribute to it financially. I know it might not be even remotely as serious as this movie, but there is a similar aspect shown in the recent Indian release Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahani about one of the male characters being a professional Kathak dancer. He is not gay, he is not even effeminate, he just has a passion for dancing which the society finds difficult to accept and he often gets made fun of. Please do talk about it if and when you guys review this film in Beyond Borders.

I APOLOGIZE DEEPLY for my earlier very dismissive comment. Please try to forgive me. After watching Hassan and Aamna’s synopsis and review I realize that my real problem with the movie was not understanding it. It was late evening and I was frustrated with struggling to comprehend the high Urdu parts and trying to make sense of the appearance and eviction of the Khwaja Serais and the effeminate dancing etc. Please disregard my previous negative comment. I am so very ashamed and sorry. This was a very courageous film with some superb acting. It also presented some very ugly and alarming aspects and behavior of many sects of society. Yes it was little weird to see a person who recites naat dancing and watching movies and songs coz ppl who willfully adopts and indulge themselves as proper religious person they dont have hobbies like dancing singing but now thats a point that khawaja sahab is not religious or extremely pious or some imam person. He has shown to be a person with good voice who recites naats and also sehras at wedding and qawwalis he was shown to have liked movies and songs and thats her daughter knows. He is just a normal man with hobbies. Being a naat khawan with good voice and being a total religious person are two diff things. Atif aslam recited kalam e allah and tajdar e haram and he also sing songs and dance too why? Because he has just a good voice and same is khawaja sahab. And also he danced in intimate grp of friends and not for virality or anything. And thats make the naat khawan being dancing totally digestable and i wont take it as a mistake even that he danced uski marzi. If he didnt do thats also fine. And there was no way that they eas glorifying any bad thing. Homesexuality was cursed by the main character clearly. The message was just that the person in fun danced with grp of friends who is not shown as a religious person at all. Just a naat khawan. I was watching every scene k ab ayega kuch controversial but nothing like that happened and I was surprised why was it banned even. And maulvi ok can object if something glorifying the gher ikhlaqi thing like lgbtq. But this i just dont get it.

I would like to know why you rated it so low when you praised it ? I think the promos were misleading, the poster shows the lead with a dubatta and the promos focus on the small scenes if seen out of context can make it look controversial. It will reach audiences that are now world-wide and its acceptance world-wide will be the best repartee to the elements that called for a ban. A very pertinent question and literally the white elephant in the room is ..... can anyone post a video taken at a privatesetting among people who are sharing some intimate personal moments and acting out in complete faith among them, on a public forum?? The video when seen in isolation can be ibterpreted so wrongly and our society which is so hungry to pass judgement on "strangers" at the drop of a hat, can do immense harm. Such trespassing of a private moment has to be legally punished. This is serious form of irresponsible and serious defamation. I haven't watched this movie and will watch after paying for it. But I felt really sad for Sarmad. This man is a gem who despite these bans, gave us more and more and still giving. Sarmad and his movies are the ones that we can proudly present globally. The people who watched the movie are saying it's not controversial. My point is even if it is controversial why we are finding Islam in movies.Movies tell the stories. These can tell stories of those who are practicing Muslims,not practicing Muslims, committing sins, living lives that can be beyond our imagination or our practices. Don't watch movies to learn Islam. For that there are other mediums.

I thought it was building up to something but there was no such climax not even a subtle one. One thing i had noticed at the end was that he was sitting alone wearing his wife’s sweater and hat, it was a hard watch. Somehow we all do this to someone in some capacity where we refuse to forgive people for being human. It’s an excellent movie based on a very sensitive issue. Sarmad is an outstanding actor and director. I’m glad he released it on KZbin. I wanted to support more, but I had to pick the Vimeo option. I wish Sarmad should have kept the open opportunity of ‘thanks’ on KZbin to support the movie. Please tell Sarmad to keep that option on his link so the viewers can help him more. Rocky and Rani movie also has this sensitive issue about male dancers. Dancing, Singing, and any art are emotions and these should be out from the name of religion, cultures, and barriers of countries.

The only problem I had with the film was that it lacked a balanced view on the clergymen. They needed to show someone who was from the same community who had his back or was at least sympathetic towards Rahat. Just one scene in the entire film, not much, would’ve really contrasted people who get religion/it’s aspects of mercy or forgiveness and people who don’t! Not all of them are like that, you know, which the film failed to portray. Specially, the milad sequence, using Nasheeds in the background, to show such horrible rigid religious men, was an overkill (this scene was probably why it was banned tbh)! Maybe it speaks to the biases of the film makers, but it was a tad bit polarized and dramatized! Felt really bad for him though throughout the movie, and what an a-hole of a daughter.

@@sab-ali yes but that doesn’t mean all of them do! Just in that scene, some kind of “ominous” background music would’ve had the same impact, the makers just didn’t have to be so aloof. Having adab for others helps you sympathize with them, respect them, understand them and also forgive them, where was the adab in this scene, adab where it matters the most? But the makers were too cbf. I totally get why it was banned. When you make a movie in Pakistan, you have to understand you can’t cross certain lines, and when you do, you can’t cry about not having a theatrical release. When we can give the makers credit for shedding a sympathetic light on the marginalized khajasira community here, who btw were being evicted for not paying rent, which is totally understandable in any other context, we can surely expect respect and adab in the religious sense or at the very least some balancing factors that don’t portray us as a blind strict dichotomous society. What happens to Rahat is unfortunately far from the teachings of Islam, and is heartbreaking to see - powerful story telling indeed, but in all honesty it’s a bit unrealistic to portray such a strong boycott for someone of today, over a dancing video. No one person came to their rescue, except a khajasira for a minute second, outside of their family? Itna zalim bhi nahi hai hamara samajh!

I have also remembered one incident after watching this, this is a nice molvi that faces alot of challenges i have remembered that i am in university and one day my friend came to me and asked do you pray namaz? I just say now a days i am not praying... Then my friend continues to laugh alot on me and mocking with friend and told her... "See, this girl donot pray namaz i think she is not muslim" And continued to laughter that day i was crying alot all the day... 😢😢😣😭😭😭😭 then i talked to allah then i got peace... We have grown up in an environment listening to na’ats on loud speaker in Ramadan. All I mean 100 % of these na’ats were exactly sung on tunes of Indian songs. So how were these made without listening to these songs.

SARMAD's dance was a depiction of Rahat Khwaja's desires, passion and fondness for dance and films, which the society never approved. Depiction of his hobbies which he was not allowed to express in country like Pakistan full of ignorant clergy. Who does not know how to debate or showcase Intellect in most cases. I do agree that Sarmad's appearance in that dance could've been avoided.

The poster for Zindagi Tamasha is highly misleading. It shows Khwaja sb with a gold embroidered dupatta on his head and wearing bracelets. There is no such image in the film!! All along, at the back of my mind, I was expecting that Khwaja sb was harbouring a secret of being a cross dressser or something and the film was going to explore the issue. Felt a bit numbed at the end of 2 hours, as the poster image took me off on a non-existent tangent, thereby taking away from the actual flow of the movie. Why put such a poster out??? I'm annoyed!!

Great story ! But I honestly felt like it would've made a very good short film, because the format and style of the story was perfect for a short film. I just felt like it didn't need to be 2 hour long . There were many things that were left unsaid, I guess that was the crux of the movie that it was meant to be critiqued and perceived by the audience. This all could've been done much more perfectly in 15-20 min. Just an opinion !

Zindagi tamasha is a brilliant movie but i dont think its a movie for the cinema. I wish it was released on netflix or some other OTT. I wish sarmad khoosat all the best for future. He raises the bar with each of his projects.

I saw this movie recently. Honestly , i was enjoing it as a movie and while watching it, i decided that i will show it to mt family as well. But then that sarmad dance scene made me uneasy and i felt cringe . That scene made me think weather i should show this movie to my family or not. I think there was no need for that scene. Otherwise it was a good movie

Definitely watched it as it came live on yt. (It had ads though) and was convincing my family too to watch it but due to the prospective the majority of our religious groups created against this movie, they refused to watch it. Anyways... It worth the time. It was painful definitely but was awesome also the main actor was amazing. I don't remember seeing him on tv or movies. About the story. It surely showed the bitter reality of our society. I onve watched a man fron turkey maybe, a molvi and old man dancing and enjoying. And remember that my friend who shared it with me said, it is quite viral there and people were using similar words that i saw in the movie. It was funny and odd at the moment but also concerning about that individual who was facing digital bullying but how miserable it will be in his surroundings. This movie reminded me of that old man... This movie have talked on the matter of bully one get by his mere mistake (his mistake wasn't dance but trusting his friends who abandoned him, even friend's son didn't come afterwards to meet his wife despite promise whuch was so sad) Molvis of our society are toxic and manipulative arrogant group who always bring choas and hate among people. The molvi in this movie portrayed the arrogance and entitlement that we usually see around us. They lie, they abuse, they torture people, they support crime in the name of betterment of religion, they choose to stay silent over sins their fellowmen commit or choose to stand with it by blackmailing others. These are absolutely not part of islam. But here we are... It is unfortunate that this masterpiece didn't get to cinema screen.

I saw this movie the day it was released on KZbin because I wanted to see what’s said in there and try to understand why it got banned. First of all I didn’t find even one scene in the movie which could have pushed it to be banned. As you said it was a reflection of us all, and that might have been the only reason why those people who banned it, actually went for this decision. Because they saw themselves in this movie and couldn’t bear looking at their own ugly faces. Its so sad that we are so intolerant that we cannot bear to look at ourselves in mirror. 😢 The story, the characters, the situations hit so hard on my heart. It was very sensitively made and definitely merited for all the awards and appreciation that it won. Sarmad Khoosat is an artist who is way beyond our times and caliber. I will see this movie again because it was beautiful. ❤

I felt the pace was too slow and the story was too predictable and straight forward! It was a mirror to society but it could've been a 40 minutes film at most! It would've been more crisp and good! If i compare this to joyland or Kamli, the film was mediocre
