I don't get all these hateful comments against her speech. She's a woman who regardless of her status, has suffered a lot in her life, and she is still positive and trying to share that with people. She's also a very important latin american author, and that's what authors do, they share their stories.

There are a lot of positive comments too, why dwell on what you call the hateful comments? In fact, I wrote a negative comment without it being hateful at all. I think she is a wonderful woman; I simply disagree with and find disappointing what she has to say here. More than that, I think some of the comments are rather damaging to women. However, I am an admirer of Allende and that has not changed. People are entitled to an opinion which differs from yours.

I really like it when I see or hear about old but still active and happy humans, sometimes I feel sorry for them because they've probably known lots of people who have kicked the bucket already. I know lots of people who don't like the fact of being old and unfortunately they wish if they die before being old. I totally don't agree about their opinion but I think why don't they ask the almighty Allah for a blessed life, am 14 and I wish a joyful and active long life.

except in the most extreme of circumstances, where you are physically restrained, you will always have a choice. And even then, you can choose to struggle, or accept it. Even if it's a fruitless choice, it is still one you have. So, to say "you don't have choice" is pretty much as hard to achieve as you possibly can get. Know what? Choice could be taken away via drugs. Particularly forced application of said drugs.

SangoProductions21 Either Or is not really offering a choice. It's another version of "...Or Else". Werner Erhardt used to hit his EST classes with a question: "Chocolate or Vanilla - choose one." The response was to choose one and say "I choose (whatever) because I choose (whatever)." The response of "I choose none." was not allowed, but it represented a real OPTION that Werner didn't, wouldn't consider. What if I choose nothing because I choose nothing? And so it is with life. The third options are not offered. No choices. Like floodwater racing through a canyon. Go this way or nowhere. Back to the original subject. The speaker obviously came from a place of wealth and privilege where MENUS of options are offered to her to choose from. Many, many people don't have any option but to plod on or die. Either Or. No choice. Unless you feel that those who are too poor to afford menus to choose from are free to make the "Or" choice and die.

Allende has so much to say so this was disappointing in its platitudes. Why does she dwell on her appearance and how it has changed and how her body 'sags' and how she is no longer seductive and sexy; yet in the same breath she is saying she is happy that she no longer has to please men. I doubt a man giving a talk on living passionately in old age would diss his own appearance. And to say 'unless you are ill or poor, you have choices' was quite unfortunate as many older people are indeed both ill and poor and also need to be encouraged to live passionately. I think she played this for laughs and lightness and somehow just missed. Still, she is a marvellous writer so I will reread her books.

Really should have left out "compassionately". To say that to only live that way is by being vegan is extremely ignorant. Perhaps I am just plain miserable but this woman comes across as a Joan Rivers ripoff, minus the humour and honesty. She has clearly has work done on her face at some stage, was it before or after her great revelation on how to live? She makes lots of small quips and adds handfuls of innuendo to the talk, but it all falls flat. What makes the Joan Rivers work is the upfront honesty and profanity, while such a talk could never really happen at TED doesn't mean you can water it down and expect it to still taste the same. Nearly eight minutes of hypocrisy, this was not even entertainment. Also what was with the sycophant woman at the end of the talk? Is the normal sort of thing that happens at a TED talk?
