That last was some genius wit! Presented with an absolutely inappropriate question, Allende diffused the super awkward situation by playing along and making a hilarious joke! Well done!

Nice. She says: "It's great to let go... I should have started doing it sooner." Great advice. I know the older I get the less important are the things that upset me the most in the past. Say "yes" to whatever comes our way. Life. Nice.

I don't get all these hateful comments against her speech. She's a woman who regardless of her status, has suffered a lot in her life, and she is still positive and trying to share that with people. She's also a very important latin american author, and that's what authors do, they share their stories.

There are a lot of positive comments too, why dwell on what you call the hateful comments? In fact, I wrote a negative comment without it being hateful at all. I think she is a wonderful woman; I simply disagree with and find disappointing what she has to say here. More than that, I think some of the comments are rather damaging to women. However, I am an admirer of Allende and that has not changed. People are entitled to an opinion which differs from yours.

I really like it when I see or hear about old but still active and happy humans, sometimes I feel sorry for them because they've probably known lots of people who have kicked the bucket already. I know lots of people who don't like the fact of being old and unfortunately they wish if they die before being old. I totally don't agree about their opinion but I think why don't they ask the almighty Allah for a blessed life, am 14 and I wish a joyful and active long life.

then you occasionally have decent choices. You always have choices no matter what. Whether they get you killed or worse is another question. But the answer you are looking for was probably so obvious you didn't intend to get an answer as much as make a statement.
@AveryMilieu
@AveryMilieu 10 жыл бұрын
True. I really don't need a reply or response to my comment. Frankly, I found her arrogant and privileged and pointless. Her blithe dismissal of those people who really do have few, if any, real choices was actually a bit offensive. And that "you always have choices" that YOU droning, SangoProductions21 is a load of crap. A choice implies there are options. "Yes" or "No" is not offering options. Not a choice.
@SangoProductions213
@SangoProductions213 10 жыл бұрын
except in the most extreme of circumstances, where you are physically restrained, you will always have a choice. And even then, you can choose to struggle, or accept it. Even if it's a fruitless choice, it is still one you have. So, to say "you don't have choice" is pretty much as hard to achieve as you possibly can get. Know what? Choice could be taken away via drugs. Particularly forced application of said drugs.
@AveryMilieu
@AveryMilieu 10 жыл бұрын
SangoProductions21 Either Or is not really offering a choice. It's another version of "...Or Else". Werner Erhardt used to hit his EST classes with a question: "Chocolate or Vanilla - choose one." The response was to choose one and say "I choose (whatever) because I choose (whatever)." The response of "I choose none." was not allowed, but it represented a real OPTION that Werner didn't, wouldn't consider. What if I choose nothing because I choose nothing? And so it is with life. The third options are not offered. No choices. Like floodwater racing through a canyon. Go this way or nowhere. Back to the original subject. The speaker obviously came from a place of wealth and privilege where MENUS of options are offered to her to choose from. Many, many people don't have any option but to plod on or die. Either Or. No choice. Unless you feel that those who are too poor to afford menus to choose from are free to make the "Or" choice and die.

Allende has so much to say so this was disappointing in its platitudes. Why does she dwell on her appearance and how it has changed and how her body 'sags' and how she is no longer seductive and sexy; yet in the same breath she is saying she is happy that she no longer has to please men. I doubt a man giving a talk on living passionately in old age would diss his own appearance. And to say 'unless you are ill or poor, you have choices' was quite unfortunate as many older people are indeed both ill and poor and also need to be encouraged to live passionately. I think she played this for laughs and lightness and somehow just missed. Still, she is a marvellous writer so I will reread her books.

God how I detest these people who are supposed to be some kind of experts in how to live, as if they know some secret to life or are experts in living, or just because they smile and are positive. Do people really need to be reminded of this, and why in such a superficial way?

***** See, the reason I hate these kind of people and talks is that they attract stupid people like you who call people names if they don't agree with you about wearing your rose colored sunglasses. You really are stupid too because unsubscribing from this channel would be a poor reaction because then I would not get to see the good videos. You're just an obnoxious dolt who seems to like to try to hide it behind trying to seem mindlessly positive. So, next time you get the urge to belittle someone you don't know think a bit, then just shut up, Mr. Positive.

I agree! Try telling someone who has nothing or very little to "live life" positively and enjoy it by doing "these" things. Please, sh*t like this makes me vomit right now! Really should have left out "compassionately". To say that to only live that way is by being vegan is extremely ignorant. Not sure you understand what compassionately even means by how stupid that sounded. Anyways on regards to living healthy, in terms of longevity only, there hasn't been any longterm studies that prove that. In fact most would argue against it. Sure such things as salmon are so bad for you!!. Anyways the speech was a dumb one. She's has plastic surgery, and just talks about having erotic fantasies. Okay.... That encourages me to live passionately.

What's wrong with being vegetarian ? She said she loved animals then she just turned around making jokes of not eating them? One of the principles of Buddhism is to abstain from meat and dairy, because all lives are equal and killing is a huge sin. She should have been more respectful on that note. It's not something to joke about.

Perhaps I am just plain miserable but this woman comes across as a Joan Rivers ripoff, minus the humour and honesty. She has clearly has work done on her face at some stage, was it before or after her great revelation on how to live? She makes lots of small quips and adds handfuls of innuendo to the talk, but it all falls flat. What makes the Joan Rivers work is the upfront honesty and profanity, while such a talk could never really happen at TED doesn't mean you can water it down and expect it to still taste the same. Nearly eight minutes of hypocrisy, this was not even entertainment. Also what was with the sycophant woman at the end of the talk? Is the normal sort of thing that happens at a TED talk?
@mrsbillforshort

The only thing she has in common with Joan Rivers is that they were older women in the public eye. This is Isabel Allende, former journalist and Chilean expat novelist who wrote House of Spirits. Sorry you're feeling down. So am I. Hope we all feel better soon.
