Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014, Denmark’s Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award in 2012, to name just two of the Chilean-American writer’s many honors, Allende has dazzled readers worldwide with her powerful storytelling and distinctive hybrid of magical realism and historical fiction. In her 17th work of fiction, Allende tells a compelling story of love and betrayal set in both present-day San Francisco and Poland in the chaotic days just after World War II.
Allende is in conversation with Marie Arana.

I was in attendance at this book reading/interview, which was a joy to experience. (To Francis Osuna, Isabel Allende's book is a novel centered around the relationship between a Japanese-American man (Nisei) and a Polish Jewish woman who arrived in the U.S. from Europe just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. The woman is living with her grandparents in San Francisco, where she meets the young gentleman Ichimei Fukuda. Frankly, it makes no difference if the novelist doesn't have a direct connection to Japan. What matters is if the novelist can educate and inform him/herself sufficiently about Japanese life and culture to offer the reader a credible and compelling novel highlighting a character or locale that is Japanese or tied in with Japanese life and culture.)

I'm reading this book right now and I've been rather boring. She seems to have all the right ingredients, but there's something missing.
