Yep. Always Scrap my transformers, even if it's aluminum. I don't Scrap the aluminum ones for profit, I Scrap them to keep busy in the winter and I really enjoy it.

Yep I take apart all transformers except the tiny 9nes that are mostly plastic and tape.

I noticed my copper was covered with Aluminum wire, but once I got pass the Aluminum, there was copper underneath. I didn't want to take it apart because of the Aluminum wrap, but I'm happy I did. Is this common?

Do you mean that it was tin-coated? Or was there aluminum wire strands around it?

This is not small transformer, this is big fine transformer 😀 but sometimes is made not from copper but from CCA (copper clad aluminium) so sad for scrappers.. thank you for good i formations, merry christmass 🌲

Your opinion. I do commercial HVAC and have been collecting contactors to get the copper coils out of them. I also collect the contact points cuz I was told they are SILVER. IYO, Is it worth collecting the contact points if you have ALOT ? I have 3 home Depot buckets and a 30 gallon trash can full of contactors,plus every week I add more, and I have to disassemble and get the coil and silver contact points out. Copper is a given,but how about the contact points? Is it worth it ? Thanks, Howard Haraway

Tom one thing you didn't mention was when cutting copper to wear a mask....copper dust is very bad for the lungs..especially if your using a 4" cutoff wheel. #happyscrapping

Was wondering about the small transformers in circuit boards, are the yellow tape with copper #2?

Generally it will go for a #2 copper price, maybe a little less depending if insulation.

I strip wire like that all the time. But for flimsy wire like this I need to be sitting down and have the wire rest on my knee.

I have seen your videos about ingot making. I do not make them and do not have the set up for such. I did see one of your latest videos discussing the price of scrap stagnating until possibly 2025. Would you now suggest ingot making to save space until later?

We still do not recommend ingot-making for scrap sale purposes. We wanted to create ingots more for fun. Your mileage at your local yard may differ, but generally yards do not like accepting them

My question: I seem to not be able to find the price for transformer copper wire that is coloured. Does that effect the price? Whatever the answer is. Is it 1 or 2 ect?

typically any coloration means theres likely an impuritiy or oxidization, meaning youll likely be graded lower

i have a problem i like to tear down the small Transformers ,,lol But i also keep finding the Transformer with Aluminum Wire, witch i have but putting it in a Bucket, am I Wasting my Time ? Probably ,,,lol Do the Scrap yard ( in General ) pay for the Aluminum Wire ??

Never process the aluminum winded ones- not worth it.

Always check both spools, sometimes one is aluminum and one is copper, sometimes both are copper, sometimes both are aluminum. My scrap yard pays (currently) $0.50/LB for the aluminum wire windings

Follow up question: can u explain the difference between a transformer & ballast. Ive never had an issue understanding the difference until I found a 'transformer'? with the word 'ballast' stamped on it. wish i took a pic of it before cutting to make it copper & steel. I can only suspect the country of origin uses that term 4 both & their scrap yards pay same 4 both?
