I've always loved the sounds of the steel drum, never knew it was so complicated to make. Took me 27 years to look up how it was made! haha

@Docv400 you have to get them retuned every now and then and it costs a lot of money to get it done right. At least out here in long beach it does.

How they make the notes templates sizes? Like what size for an A or a D etc... ? Someone?
@lochzoch898710 жыл бұрын
He measured it off his old one, but you can find templates online for them, you just need to make sure that it's a tenor pan.

How the hell did someone figure out that a really great instrument could be transformed from an old oil barrel? Epiphany and genius!
@PlayitonPan4 жыл бұрын
It was discovered by accident. It was found that biscuit tin lids and metal dustbins would produce different notes when dented. The first instruments only had two, then three notes (dents). Steelpans now have over twenty indentations (notes).

at the beginning, is he hitting the drum with a coconut?
@tundrapunx16 жыл бұрын
the origins of the steel pan drums are the islands of trinidad and tobago....not exactly known for their affluent suburbs. buying an expensive steel drum is, in fact, missing the entire nature of the instrument itself. you can make your own pan drum with litte more than a 55 Bbl drum and small array of hammers....and have an instrument that you can be proud of rather than lining some manufacturers pocket.

I find it odd that people did not know the origin of the steel drum was oil drums. That's traditional, and it makes sense - a cheap source of material.
