@@oblitafierOh I see, I thought it was setup as a keyboard split. With the lower part of the keyboard playing the Prophet bass, and the upper playing the chords on the ISI-NIN. Just because the left hand and right hand patches sound quite different. But I forget that this can do splits, maybe because only few synths of this type can. Makes it really powerful, and the price doesn't seem quite so steep considering that.

Dear Alex Ball, good news: On start the Roland JP-8 will always perform the given split point as indicated by the arrow. But...: It can be temporarily shifted by holding the split key mode button down while playing any key, which then will become the new lowest note of the upper section. 😊

Is it just me or is the ISE-NIN just a bit gnarlier in the A/B comparison, a tiny bit of (filter?) overdrive? Also possibly a bit more top end in there but not a whole heap. Really nice, though, and the price is the only thing that would hold me back. You wouldn't notice the differences in an actual mix in a million years. The usual high quality presentation and musicality from Mr Ball, of course.

Isn't the Jupiter 8 overrated? I know there are a lot of artists praising the Jupiter 8 but I think the smaller Jupiter 4 is sonically the better choice (although it is expensive too). In 1979 I was lucky to play the "new released" Jupiter 4 in a music shop in Flensburg and it just blew me away. Those days the Jupiter 4 was still an expensive instrument (I guess more than 4k "Deutsche Mark"). But I always remember this 4 voice gem.

Shadow Child to the rescue again on the Jupiter-8? I will say the ISE-NIN sounds a tad more dull. The Jupiter-8 has a bit more sheen on the top end. That's nothing you couldn't fix with a bit of EQ and for the price of full MIDI integration, vs. the non-existent MIDI (unless through a retrofit) and the cost of a Jupiter-8, it's kind of a no-brainer if you're going after that sound. I had a Jupiter-8 in my studio for nearly two years and can't say I miss it a lot. I much rather prefer the Jupiter-6.
@AlexBallMusic

This is another Jupiter-8. I know about 5 owners in the UK and can usually grab one from somewhere. 🙂 Once it's in the studio for a long time it becomes more normal I guess. The 6 is a great machine in a different way.

Having a tv show would be a big step down, both in terms of money and exposure (unless it’s just a re-broadcast of his KZbin show and, therefore, just an easy way to make a little more money?). The worst thing almost any content creator could do is … bring in a traditional tv production operation to split up the money a million ways, and then overlay a bunch of stilted, cheesy, inauthentic structural changes to sterilize the content. And then … said creator will be contractually unable to do the same show for themselves on KZbin after the tv show is inevitably is cancelled … because no one watches tv except people over 60? And, for that matter, a couple hundred thousand people watching a show on traditional cable tv is actually considered successful in 2023? And it’s only going downhill rapidly from here? If you’re reading any of this Alex (or any of your music KZbin content brethren) … please don’t EVER do that! … unless HBO came to give you a bag and says, “here’s a bunch of money. Do whatever you want, we’ll throw it up on Max!” That would be cool (and maybe not too unrealistic? Synth and music tech are more popular than ever. Alex Ball is one of a handful of the biggest names in this space, and also one of the most entertaining).

Hi Alex. That comparison with the Super Jupiter is a perfect example how people often overrate the “but it doesn’t sound exactly like the original” argument. Listened to in perfect isolation the sounds seemed rather different but used in a fuller arrangement / context the differences seem to almost magically disappear. Therefore my opinion has always been: Original or emulation, if the possibilities of the instrument fit to your style the last tiny differences mean very little. Just get on with it! Which also makes mince meat of the old analog versus digital discussion. And let nobody argue that I have probably never been near an original. 😁
@AlexBallMusic

For sure, it should be judged in its own right and any difference will always be judged as "wrong" because it's different. I did the comparison because it was the number one request I had when I announced I would be doing this video. People were intrigued, so I hopefully gave the answer for what it was worth.

Having used the “Deckard’s Dream” (Black Corporations CS-80 clone) I would be very reluctant to spend any money on their products without thorough testing. The original Deckard’s Dream had software generated envelopes and LFOs with audible stepping - it’s just criminal to go to all that effort and end up with such a mediocre product. A friend of mine bought the Deckard’s Dream DIY kit from Black Corporation - intending to assemble it as a family project with her husband. She said the kit came as a set of unpopulated circuit boards and a bag of SMD parts.

Put all of that lovely DSP power into capturing that Jupiter magic and not waste it on some useless pan flute preset, if you catch my drift here. Been waiting for a decent head to head on the Ese-Nin to J-8, especially from someone who knows from Roland gear, like one Mr. Alex Ball. Roland has utterly eschewed the retro gear market, unlike Korg, and it’s certainly cost them in gear purchases on my part; one D-50 Boutique vs. an Arp Odyssey FS, MS-20 FS, Arp 2600M, and a MiniKorg 700 FS. I have given up hope they would have a moment of nostalgia and was definitely keen on knowing if the Black Corporation gizmo would satisfy the niche of a genuine Jupiter-8, and based on this vid, it seems it does. So, many thanks, Alex. I think I can put an order in now without buyer’s remorse afterwards.

To be fair to Roland, when I demoed the Jupiter-X and Juno-X against the originals, they sounded very, very good. black corporation have copied a few classics now. Wonder why they don't get the bad press that behringer gets for doing the same thing
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic Жыл бұрын
The criticism of Behringer relates to things like registering the name of a journalist who gave unfavourable reviews in order to make childish, fake products in his name. Or trying to sue Sequential when an employee was critical on a forum. Or mocking Roland whilst simultaneously relying entirely upon their back catalogue for legendary products to clone. Or registering the Oberheim name and then proceeding to list Oberheim's achievements on their website under the heading "we at Oberheim". Thankfully, they reversed this one. Or letting companies do the R&D and then copying the results - Mackie mixers, Boss pedals, Arturia KeyStep, Make Noise Maths. If they want to bring back discontinued vintage synths like Black Corporation - great. To Behringers credit, they responded to criticism about not following through on charity promises by exceeding them and have posted about where that work is being done, so that should absolutely be noted. I think a lot of people deliberately misunderstand the criticism of Behringer and say things like "the snobs just hate poor people" because it's an easier thing to believe than the reality of it.

The ISE-NIN vs MKS-80 comparison was interesting. MKS-80 was more liquid and plastic sounding, versus the ISE-NIN capturing the Jupiter-8 metallic sparkle. A little harder edged sounding due to the ISE-NIN using SSI oscillator chips (triangle core) versus the original Jupiter-8 discrete oscillators (sawtooth core) - the oscillator chips in both revs of the MKS-80 are also triangle core. Overall, I'm liking the ISE-NIN more and more each time I hear it. I would still rather keep my Jupiter-8, but if I was forced to sell it, I would be more than happy with the ISE-NIN.

I thought there was a law that whenever you've got anything that remotely resembles a Jupiter-8 you are legally bound to play Save a Prayer. You'll have the feds on you!

Nice! I've been trying the magic spells for a few hours now, and all I've got is a Bananarama cassette with no cover, a hedgehog wearing an eye patch, and a bag of expired Waffle mix. Oh well, I'll keep trying!

Should've connected the JP8 on its balanced XLR's, that eliminates the whinning noise @8:40 (mostly produced by the Z80) on my JP8 🙂 I'm especially in love with the 12db filter with the resonance raised.. filters sweeps singing so silky and gently.. absolutely magic!! No n of the VST emulations on the market till now come close.. even an analoge like OBX sounds different. The Deepmind12 also has an 12db filter.. nice but not even close. I was curious for this one.. interesting.. sounds quite similar but not exactly.. need to check this out somewhere in the future.. perfect size for the overcrowded studio.. 😬 Thanks for the comparison!! 🤩

Hey there! I have a quick question for you. Do you think this particular pair would work well with my Roland SYS-8? I'm planning on using it as the master keyboard, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to have more hands-on control over the synth by utilizing the parameters of the system-8. I'm also considering pairing it with either the Prophet 10 or the OB-X8. What do you think?

I have an JP8 and a Roland System 500. The Ise Nin got this precise modern vintage vibe and sounds very much like a polyphonic System 500.

I find it weird that with today's MUCH cheaper electronic parts a 4k synth has to look like it was made by Behringer. That power switch looks so low quality (which doesn't mean it is, I obviously don't know). Still cool that they really pulled this off as amazing as they did!

Usually the modern versions have a brighter high end and cleaner sound due to components, and it seems that way here. I would say the pad sound at 8.56 shows the Jupiter 8 being more lovely but I think it has a bit more detuning and resonance, so its possible that the NIN can be closer...love the jams - especially the last one! Great video and good job to Black Corporation - its a cracking synth for a fraction of what a J8 costs on the used market in a usable package...

I hear a slightly harsh resonance on the NIN vs the original, on a number of sounds.. the top end 'fizz' as someone mentioned, but I don't like the sound of that resonance (the OB-6 sounds better up top than the NIN from what I can hear). JP-8 sounds great of course.

It´s a very good sounding synth but no Jupiter 8 clone. The basic soundcharachter is way too harsh and metallic. Jupiter 8 is more soft and round.

I'm not sure who the market is for this given the cost. The System 8 sounds very noticeably closer to the real thing, it's a dead on match for my JP8a 95% of the time. If I was going for a road Jupiter I'd take that or the Roland cloud version, and if I wanted to pick up a hardware synth in the 4x range when the P5, OBX8, 3rd Wave are out there... this seems a pretty tough sell
