I love my Deepmind 12. No the oscillators aren’t as “strong” as a Jupiter but they do sound great. I think in a blind a/b comparison, many would struggle to pick the right one with many sounds - and if you didn’t have the Jupiter there to compare it to it would sound great on it’s own. If I was going to be stranded on a desert island and had to pick one of them it would be the Deepmind 12. It’s more versatile and will do things that many other synths just can’t do. It’s mod matrix and onboard effects really make it a pleasure to design patches on.

Fantastic demo. DM12 is a great synthesizer and it's totally underrated just watch how close it can be to the JP8. People are just getting crazy about owning a JP8 thinking that they can produce great tunes, those great tunes were created by talented artists and their skills.

I understand everyone's love for the Jupiter and Juno (my personal favorite), they are classics for a reason - fantastic synths. But I have to say, the DM12 is just a very special synth and has a very good sound to it. It's easy to dismiss the DM12 as just some 'cheaper imitation', but it's really its own sound that is extremely lush and beautiful. It is worth auditioning. You may actually fall in love with it.

Now do the opposite.. Run through the DM12 patches and make the JP8 sound like them... Not that easy is it ;-). Every synth have their strengths and weaknesses. New synths are always matched up against old (great) synths and people are always like "naaaah, not quite there", but the truth is that the new synths (usually) can do patches that old synths never would be able to.

What is "negative keytrack volume"?
@aandarcom
@aandarcom 7 жыл бұрын
Open the matrix. Source = Note Number. Destination = try VCA All, or VCA Active, or VCA Envelope Depth. Amount = less than 0. :) Probably "VCA Envelope Depth" will work best. This trick works better than just a simple EQ boost to low frequencies of all notes, because it gives a boost to the whole frequency range of the low notes. Some of the old analog synths have "fatter low end", simply because the frequency compensation on them is different, or even in some cases non existent. Higher frequencies on an analog oscillator are naturally quieter, most synths compensate for that effect.

The Jupiter 8 is getting to a point where people don’t even want to play them for fear of them breaking. The price for them is truly because they’re collectible and collectors will pay big money for them. I honestly think that the Jupiter 8 was used in so many ‘80s hit songs that is the real reason everyone wants them. Same with the Prophet 5 Rev.3 and Oberheim OB-Xa.

Videos like this are transforming my opinion of the DM. Too many of the other videos are just people playing demo patches or commercial patches and I have no need for other people's patches; if I wanted to spend my life scrolling through patches I'd buy a keyboard workstation! Even on the DX series synths I create my own patches and avoid the presets. I'm seriously considering selling my uninspiring Boutique JP-08 now. I don't mind the tiny faders, it's just that everything has the same sound to it regardless of the patch. It's like it's running through a "Jupiter" filter.

Agree, in terms of looks, the JP-8 is the best looking analog ever imo.. The Memorymoog is probably next followed by the OBX-A or Prophet 5. Wouldn't kick a JP-6 off the 'A'-frame either, come to think of it! Great to see Moog re-issue the Minimoog, adding modern interface connections to make it easily connectable to a DAW etc. Roland have done a pretty good job with the Jupiter X but I'd still like to see a re-issue the JP-8, maybe at a comparable price point to something like the Moog One. Regarding the DM 6/12 they sound fantastic for the money and are hard to beat for sheer value and list of features.
@bengsynthmusic

@@shane864 Sorry but it just doesn't sound...interesting. It's just...basic strings or plucks that sound huge but don't sound unique. OB-X has an amazing more analog sound. CS-80 amazing expressiveness and pad. Moog has an iconic filter. JP-8 is mostly for its looks let's be real.
@shane864
@shane864 3 ай бұрын
@@bengsynthmusic I own all of the big vintage polys aside from the 80 because software with a polyAT controller nails that sound and I have no love for the hardware, and the JP8 is the last one I'd sell out of all of them. Memorymoog is the crazyass bass king, P5 is for sync and more aggro bass, OB the big brasses and round pads obviously, Trident does epic space pads, and the JP8 is the king of pretty and attacky bonk. Ethereal strings, the snappiest arpeggios on the planet, and the best resonant filter in any synth, ever in the IR3109 implementation it has. Putting it in split mode on two slightly different versions of the same patch with the LFO's seperated and out of sync then panning each side a bit left and a bit right is just audio sex... and that's all before getting into how it's the most perfectly designed performance/programmer's synth ever built, which I suppose is what you are stripping down to simply just being superficially pretty. Frankly I don't think you understand what the synth is or does, and that is a shame for you.

I have owned a Behringer Model D, Prophet Rev2, Prophet 6, Ob6, Juno 106, Juno 6, Nord Lead 2X, and Deepmind 12. The Model D is fantastic. Solid build quality, outstanding sound, zero problems. I was so excited to get a Deepmind 12. But I found its sound very harsh and the model I got had unforgiveable noise glitch issues where you would switch patches and a key would trigger and be held down (and it was a different key for each patch). The only way to solve it would be to hit another key, at which point the first key would stop firing. This meant it could never be used in a live setting. I've listened to hundreds of these synth comparison videos, but there really is no substitute for sitting down with an instrument and playing it. I know on paper and in these youtube videos the Deepmind 12 can sound similar, and have way more effects, than the classic Junos, prophets, etc. But having sat with, recorded, and played with all of these, the two synths I still have are the Juno 106 and the Ob6. I wish the ob6 had 61 keys, another LFO, a different filter/filter mode. But their sound is amazing. When it comes to sitting in a mix, etc. one could probably never tell the difference, and for that matter there's many vst's that you can get away with, especially when it's a background patch/pad, etc. Price wise this can be a great deal, but the sound was a no go for me. I hope they take a shot at a Jupiter, OB, or CS clone. But I wasn't impressed by the Deepmind 12. There's a value argument to be sure. But for pure sound quality, I think there are much better options, especially used, that don't crush the wallet that much more.
@vintagesynths
@vintagesynths 4 жыл бұрын
Sam Strohbehn yes you are right. Great used and vintage options are Alpha Juno, Jx8p or 3p. Modern synths which are nice are the summit for example. Even the JV-880 I like more than the deepmind soundwise.

Also the DM12 would benefit from a little bit of S&G LFO to all oscillators pitch. The poly detune function is too static for emulating old VCOs - it just picks one random number at the start and keeps VERY close to it as long as you are holding the key, which results in almost no movement between the 2 saws. And finally i would experiment with the Rack Amplifier effect to make it break up like JP8. You did a good job with that sound, but IMO it is possible to get it even closer. :)

Gut gemacht und sehr interessant. As you demoed you can get plenty of interesting and usable sounds out the DM12, but it does have limitations (like the digital behavior of the envelopes for one thing), that I'm not so crazy about. And lacking that second saw wave oscillator, most of the patches with 2 oscillators have just that touch of square-ish/metallic sheen to them.

I'm not sure this is really a complete review, because for the most part, the comparison was between thick string pad type sounds, which pretty much any multi oscillator per voice analog synth can do quite well. Even Roland's boutique line can do this. Where the Jupiter 8 shines is in it's identity when using it's ADSR's with the filter in both the 12 and 24db modes, VCA, cross modulation, and sync. The Behringer looks and sounds really nice but what really surprised me was their design decision not to use individual VCF and VCA ADSR levers, instead making them shared / switchable. I know some may think it's nit picking, but this would drive me a bit nuts. Having a knob, switch, or button for every feature is sound design bliss, which is why the old analog synths like the Jupiter, OBXa, Yamaha CS synths are in such high demand.

The nonlinear behavior and differences between the oscillators of old analog synths makes the sound organic. Synths like Jupiter 8 have that quality. Another important feature of the Jup is it's slew rate, the speed at which the sound rises to full power. The DM12 is a great synth but hopefully Behringer will put more of those classic qualities into their next products!

I don't own a Deepmind 12, but from you video I get the impression that the envelopes 'snap back' to their attack value when they re-trigger instead of picking up from the release value on that moment. With a long release time, on the Jupiter, when you exceed the 8 note polyphony, the envelopes re-trigger from the point where the release value was. This makes the transition in notes sound smooth when playing notes after each other before the release time ended. On the Deepmind the envelopes sound like they are 'cutting off' and snapping back to their attack value, rather than picking up from the last release value. (sorry if this was a bit cryptic sounding ;)

MacXpert74 you are right, that's also my experience. When you program it, it's really disturbing. It doesn't sound organic. The envelopes just stop immediately without release, even release in envelope is long. You see at this example that it's a digital controlled synth, whereas the JP is completely analog circuits.
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, right. That's something I don't like about digital synths or analog synths with "digital envelopes". I own a JP-6 and Juno-60 they both just like the JP-8 have envelopes that pick up from the release value. With the limited polyphony this sounds much nicer on string patches than a synth that re-triggers it's envelopes from the 0 point. You'll then need many more notes of polyphony to have it sound smooth with envelopes that behave like that. It's a shame!
@aandarcom
@aandarcom 7 жыл бұрын
It is not a feature of digital envelopes, but a feature of badly programmed digital envelopes. It works exactly the way you want on most of the VSTi synths i am using. If it indeed resets like that on DM12, all you need to do is write a feature request for the firmware team.
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 7 жыл бұрын
+aandarcom Ah, I see, that makes sense. I haven't played the Deepmind yet, so I'm not sure of how it behaves, or if it's maybe a setting somewhere. I was just going by what I'm hearing in the video. Most sample based synths that I've played do behave the way I described above, with the envelopes resetting. But that's usually not a big deal if you have 128-256 note polyphony. But on my analog synths the envelopes don't reset like that.

It is definitely so, that the DM lacks from the warmth like a vintage synth, but there are possibilities to camouflage these things with some programming. In the pad patch I used also lfo to get the oscillators a bit lively.

To my ears, the Jupiter 8 sounds way better here, more alive. But not sure how much of that is down to the extra lower octaves. Deepmind sounds like it needs a tune-up some of the time too. Still, looking forward to getting the module version of the Deepmind 12 soon.

Great comparison! And people who buy vintage synths for their sound don‘t know what they get themselves into! I own more than 20 of those relicts and at least one of them needs repairs or calibration at any one time. The Jupiter 8 is a beast and nightmare to repair. I think the only worse one was the Polymoog I once owned back in the day 😂

The Deepmind is a beautiful synth and I like it very much. However, I discovered that when changing patches there is a gap of silence. While this is ok in the studio, in a live situation may not be too good. If Behringer fixes this minor thing, the Deepmind will complete its awesomeness. I do own a 14-bit JP-8, and yes it sounds massive.

That delay is caused by being an analog synth with a built in digital routing bay and excellent effects rack. But i agree that is something that sticks out.

the king korg hands down, I can do a perfect jp8 on a king korg, and also an obx. it has many filters, is bi timberal and has a real 12ax7 tube over drive. I own a lot of synths, and its the best virtual analogue i have used so far. I had s studio sledge 2.0, sold it and bought a used roland jp 80. I can also tell you that the deepmind 12, which i own is about 87 percent of the jp8 in sound, but has more features. I have had a jp8 in the past. Sold it for a yamaha cs 80 twenty years ago. Now i just sample all the old synths and put them into a yamaha xf7 to play back.
