I mean Mushoku Tenseis web novel is complete. The LN in Japan is like a volume or 2 away from being finished as far as I know. The English translation is like 10 volumes behind now that 15 is out digitally. The nice part of Mushoku Tensei is that the LN and WN are pretty much the same but the LN expands on stuff more. So if you read all of the LN thats translated you can switch over to the web novel from where you left off and continue reading (albeit with a fan translation). Though the author has said before that Mushoku Tensei was a prequel setting up the story he really wanted to tell if you can believe that. As far as the web novel is concerned Rudys story is finished though and what a story it is.

Depending how each show got adapted, Rezero's webnovel isn't even finished yet, still on Arc 7, in which season 2 is in Arc 4, the upcoming season for Rezero will be one of the most important part of the show. Mushoku Tensei will also have its best moment in the next few season if they follow the source as accurately as possible. I can't wait for both of these show to get adapted and animated. The only problem with Mushoku Tensei, from what I understand, is the ending is more of a personal and isolated ending. The actual world still has a lot of story threads left open, so it's getting a sequel series. It kind of reminds me of the current state of a Song of Ice and Fire. There are too many loose threads for it to be finished even remotely soon. However, it has done a good job setting up a potential for multiple series set in it's world. It's just doubtful that we'll ever see it all animated.

So yeah it is not a surprise there are a lot of threads that feel open as they are still needed to be explored. Hence he is writing the sequal series.

I’ve never noticed how a lot of them don’t actually end. That honestly makes all the “isekai is all the same” talking points have a lot more weight to it. It’s not just that they tend to be all the same, they rarely are. It’s just that it feels like we’re watching the same show because we only get to see the start of the story, every season, for every new show. The exceptions are the most popular shows, but that leaves THE REST to just be the same story of “guy/gal gets reincarnated and they end up on a fantasy land” and that’s where it ends. The fact most of them don’t actually finish the journey really does make it seem like they’re all the same: because most of them are just the start of the journey and ONLY the start. This reminds me a lot of why I stopped reading superhero comic books for a few years; they rely WAY too much on constantly rebooting or renumbering stuff, but it was all the same. Always a new start, but never an actual satisfying ending. Just restart over and over again. I hope this trend ends. I’d like to see more shows that actually end.

Well, they're made for selling the novels where the story do continue... But yeah, some good stories were trashed just because it took time for it to start moving apart from the common origin (for the sake of its character development)

I mean, I think this is a result of what's isekai inspired from - MMORPGs , and just like isekai's, the vast majority of them come & go, and heck, that's actually an optimal way to play since the pattern is always good start, and then it goes downhill, becomes p2w so time to move on to the next. Now, that's a very BIG issue rooted in the very nature of MMOs BUT it needn't be one in isekai anime since it can just craft the ending of the hero's journey as you would to a fantasy so hopefully it can try to break those chains. Perhaps the extreme focus on the journey of isekai, which is similar to MMOs at the end of the day which u play for the journey, and not much on the destination is also a reason to this issue. Like, a shounen, a romance, a seinen, etc. while it goes w/o saying that the journey is important, they always have a destination building up towards as well. You know Eren wants to kill all titans, you know Lelouch plans to confront his father even, you know Yagamai Light wants to rule the world as Kira, you know Naruto wants to become Hokage, you know a couple has to get together or if they're already in a relationship, you hope to see them married or happy together or maybe decide to separate even if it ends up being better , you know Mikey wants to bring back oldschool honorable deliquents in Tokyo Revengers, you know Josuke and crew have to find & face Dio, etc. Now, obviously the end goals may be prone to be changed, or somewhat altered depending on new realizations our protags come to, but it doesn't change the fact that there's always a very important end goal in mind, not just the journey.
@diegoperezreyes83882 жыл бұрын
@@ManlyTear I once read that isekai, as a genre, was born a way of escaping reality by exploiting the fundamental feeling of trying to percieve ourserlves as the protagonist. That way, as you cleverly said, the journey is everything as you most likely won't have any clue on what the destiny should be. The most common solution I can find already in isekai is the lazy writing of defeating a demon lord as the ultimate destiny. The problem with that is the fact that it being so overused brings rejection from spectators. Even if the journeys are different, many of them have not even began by the end of the show's only cour, ending in the misunderstanding of the genre.
@fearedjames2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem is that a lot of them DO end, the anime adaptions just don't. Generally light novel series either take 15-20 books or take less than 3. Lots of big isekai are in that 10-15 book range, so a lot of them havn't ended. Konosuba for example finished like a year or two ago. SO WHERE'S KONOSUBA SEASON 3???!!
@NeinKyori2 жыл бұрын
Isekai is basically just fantasy + mc from another world. It has endless potential of unique plot and setting, like says One Piece, Naruto and Toriko are all fantasy setting and they are all very different from each other, and yet isekai chooses to be the same RPG-mechanic world, same medieval age with adventurer guild, same Tolkien-esque monster race every times. Even the MCs can be different, and I don't mean just changing gender or turning them edgy. Say, why not take the Mondaiji route and take people already with powers to be summoned, instead of wasting time granting power to powerless ones? What if the og setting were an urban fantasy where MC has power/is not human but has to hide it to blend in with the crowd, how would they react to the new world where people flinging fireballs like it's just tuesday? Would their power work properly, or even stronger somehow? (Wrong context magic is a very funny trope imho)

I actually think that odd decision might have been the best decision. The clearly did their homework. They had a light novel and a rework of it into Manga. The lightnovel has an ending, there is enough fan arts and official arts , enough time to plan out and even make a fking studio. And the manga Just gave a basic idea of how you can frame and how you shouldn't frame some of these scenes.... Mushoku Tensei, unlike many others, has done majority of the work before actually even announcing it, the majority work being actual planning and designing which a lot of Isekai studios just skip over

My favorite isekai is "So I'm a Spider, So What" (especially the light novels). The one thing it does the best above most other isekai is have an explanation for almost everything that happens in the story. For example, the one thing that always bugs me is the main character's purpose for reincarnation. Often, it just happens for the sake of it, but in Spider, its a mystery that the story reveals the answer to over time. Another nice thing is the hard magic system. In Spider, you are introduced to almost every single magic spell and know exactly what each of them do. The combat with this system is written superbly and emphasizes strategy, and I find this so much more gratifying than some Deus Ex Machina ability or something that a lot more generic isekai resort to.

The concept of Isekai is wonderful, contrasting a character's real life experience and personality with the ideology of an unfamiliar world, but to me, it's annoying when it feels like there's only one specific template a lot of them follow with half-hearted settings, ignorance of the real world, and the variation mostly being a gimmick. While they aren't anime, Amphibia and The Owl House are really great shows and worth seeing if you like the idea and potential of ending up in another world, but dislike what most anime have done with it.

@The Otaku Dragon Slayer It wasn't cancelled; it was *cut short*. The last season will just be cut down by 13-ish episodes, but they got the notice enough in advance to create the rest of the episodes in Season 2 and 3 around that limitation to give it a proper ending. So, the show will still get an ending, just with less time to do it than the creator would've hoped. It's actually like what happened to The Vision of Escaflowne way back, where it was supposed to be 39 episodes but got cut down to 26, yet it still had an ending.

Completely agree with the part that Isekais should focus more on having an ending ... that is what I love about Mushoko Tensei and similar animes ... they portray the story of the life of the main character from the beginning to the end, Episode 1 starts with the birth, the last Episode ends with the death. It feels like a journey with all the ups and downs that come with such a journey and you really get invested in them. People see the first Episode of Mushoko Tensei and only see him being an asshole and I agree, but I also see how he changes over all the years and becomes one of my favorite characters at some point. No matter what character you take from Mushoko Tensei, there are no black and white characters and they are deeper than they seem at first glance (hint: some characters may seem fairly bland in the anime so far, but you'll see all of them again at some point, it's a long story). Anime producer should focus more on the journey and make me care about the characters instead of harem shit where the only quality of most of the characters is to have tits and cheer for the MC.

honestly, at first I liked it. I've not watch the anime but I'm caught up with the english scanlated manga. I have to say, after thinking about it as a whole, I started to not like it as much as I did before. I think that back then I turned a blind eye towards rudeus' problematic behaviors and his father's bullshitery, and just enjoy the story and the world they live in. One thing I came to realise is that, what the father did to the mother and what rudeus did to the girls when he was younger, really put me off. Not because of the action being committed but because there weren't any negative consequences or repercussion of their actions. Even the girls were in on rudeus being a pervert. It just doesn't feel right to me. Also, the story sorta dwells a little to long on certain interaction/event, eg. multiple chapters just sylphy mentally battling with herself on whether to tell rudeus she is sylphy and rudeus being so dense that the time he realised it was her was when she was stripped down to her undies. I can see where the author was going with this but it just felt like it was dragged on longer than it's supposed to. Sylphy's character development being the main focus is fine but I would've liked to at least have some minor story progression and/or other minor character development instead of entirely focusing on sylphy's predicament. There was nothing for me to look forward to because the story is stagnant and anyone would have been able to predict what's gonna happen to sylphy and rudeus a few chapters ahead but having to sit through multiple chapters and copious amount of dialogue regarding that matter and nothing else just made it hard for me to concentrate and be invested in it. The story leading up to when they joined the academy was interesting and fun to read, the enjoyment just sorta disappear after that.

Not every story covers a character's whole life and beyond, plenty of these stories that are taking forever to finish altogether cover less than the span of a year or something. Waiting on a long story like Naruto's is kinda worth it when u get character & relationship growth for dozens of characters over many years of their lives, versus a season where 1 or 2 significant things happen followed by a year of waiting. I.e. other mediums like literature or manga can afford filler and stretching out arcs, meanwhile anime which is now mostly adaptations (which tries to be true to source material) can no longer easily afford hundred episode shows and are instead riding out any lucrative products while they can in order to stay in business long enough to make that one really good show. There's a reason most adaptations in general heavily change the original material, and hopefully that anime originals are making a comeback

I think ultimately I just want more isekai writers to actually ask themselves "does anything about this story actually change by being an isekai" because so many of them suddenly lose their "isekai" identity so damn quickly once it's been established that the character is used to the world they're in (often done in the first 2 episodes). There's so many shows I wish I could just enjoy as simply fantasy because it turns out their "isekai" element has no ultimate change on the outcome at all.

Thats 1 of my 2 part litmus test for isekais. Part 1) if the character dies and is transported to another world there are no stakes and therefore the whole thing is ruined. Its already bad from the jump and therefore should not exist as a concept. Part 2) If the story could be adequately told without this being an isekai why is it an isekai and not just a straight up fantasy. What utility is gained by being transported from another world? There are examples that contradict one or both of those tenents but i'm willing to say that 95% of all isekai's i've watched can be adequately judged using those two things alone.

Agreed, it'd help these stories a lot if more authors bothered using the isekai genre as anything more than an initial hook, or as a cheap justification for the protagonist's behavior and/or "superiority" over the typically medieval world. It's way more interesting when an isekai actually addresses the flaws the protagonist would still have, any attachments to their previous life/world, or uses the whole framework in the overarching plot line. Otherwise, yeah a lot of shows should just be a "normal" fantasy.

yeah I've been working on a story where someone's isekai'd, goes back home for a few years with serious trauma and grief no one around her can understand, and consequently gets lured back into the other world in part out of a dim hope that the people she lost aren't really dead, but also a feeling like she doesn't know how to live a normal life anymore. And on her return, a friend goes with them who is deeply unenthusiastic about the idea of going to another world, and she thinks it would be better for her to move on. Because the fact is, in a real situation like this, most people would probably get some kind of trauma from the violence, and moreso if one or more of their close companions die. Plus, going back to the mundane world from a magical world, without the power that made you feel safe and strong, feeling vulnerable and powerless again, that would really do a number on someone. The understanding of fantastical violence as traumatic is one of the things I really appreciate about Re:Zero. Subaru is a normal person, and normal people are not mentally equipped to handle the sort of shit he goes through without serious psychological damage. I guess I want to see more stories about people who aren't psychologically equipped for being in another world, people way out of their depth having to earn every little bit of progress they get.

Not just Isekai, I think all story’s need to be thought with an ending in mind, and it’s a problem with a number of anime. The author might change what the ending will be like down the line, or change how they intended to get to it, but they should just have an ending in mind when they start. Otherwise you run the problem of the story just seemingly going on, and on, and on, and you’re not really sure where to stop, or how to stop, until one day you decide “ok, time to wrap this up now”. If story’s have an ending already thought up, at least you know that is what you’re working towards. Then you can just do anything in-between.

Admittedly I've seen a couple anime that were like that... just seemed like they were drawing it out way past what should have been a conclusion seasons ago... (but then again if it's anime, they want to get as much as they can out of it... even if it's to a fault... after all, more seasons means more $), however when I'm writing, I try to gauge where to conclude the storyline at the right time, (and usually I find the right spot to close it up, then again there are those odd occasions where the book/series can get away from you...) *Ahem*, yes... I shall admit one of my series got away from me lol! It was ten books with a seperate stand alone (A Chance At Glory!)... that illustrates having too many characters, (isn't always a good thing!) However I look at it as a learning experience, one that I deem not to repeat... after all, a writer is always learning what to do & most importantly... what not to do! :-)
@SapioiT2 жыл бұрын
At the very least make the story so it can safely end at any time, like how Akame Ga Kill disposed of it's characters, but making it a more common occurrence to have characters end. They could still be brought back in the form of flashbacks, or even as part of setting up new characters (i.e. the ended character trained a character which gets introduced a while later), and the ending of the manga/anime would simply not introduce any new characters, but only have them end to more powerful enemies, or to tragedies, or to backstabbing, and so on. Heck, I will probably make a light novel about an immortal who gets reincarnated when his lifetime ends, and he retains or regains his memories from previous lives. Because such a manga would require those lives to end, and it would mean the story can change in time (including changing genres), and it would prevent the existing characters from being the same. At most, I would make other reborners, most of whom only get reborned once or twice, and only few of them getting reborn unlimited or seemingly-unlimited times. This way, the story can progress in different worlds, without being bound to the limits of a single world for too long, which reduces the need for excessive plot armor and plot holes. Because once the limits of one world are met, the main character can move to the next world, in a different body, sometimes not even humanoid, exploring different types of world, societies, and cultures.

Never thought about it that way before, but I couldn't agree more with the fact that Isekai shows need to start having proper endings. I find myself watching less and less anime, because everytime I start an isekai, it ends up feeling like I'm adding a new show to my list of series which I'll never see the end of. I've lost interest, because the payoff never comes. It often feels like the real progression stops mid-series, never to resume. As much as I love watching good anime, I also enjoy watching good anime wrap-ups, good endings. It gives the shows a sense of purpose, instead of just telling a meaningless story.

The problem with most isekai (and manga in general) is that they are glorified ads for the light novel. The light novels are not finished by the time the anime is aired and by the time the light novel does end (either natural or by cancellation) the audience has moved on to a newer anime. So there is no money in producing an anime which finishes the story but has abysmal ratings.

My #1 is clearly Ascendance of a bookworm. I highly recommend to check out the LN to anyone who wants to see a really detailed and interesting world that makes sense and doesn't just revolve around the protagonist. What I like the most is how nobles are portrayed in this one. Here you can see and feel just how intense the life of a noble truly is; why some noble families survive while others fall apart. Their every day is filled with intrigues, every word is an attempt to gather information or establish a connection for the sake of the family. Every action and gesture has some sort of hidden meaning. There is a reason for a family to be considered "noble", and it doesn't have to do anything with money. Really, with how interesting the interactions between nobles can be, it pains me to see how other isekais (even good ones, like Mushoku tensei) treat nobles as if they're just a bunch of rich dudes, who can do whatever they want without a care in the world. There is sooooo much more to them. The potential is incredible but often discarded.

Gigguk rebranding to the Isekaiman, to go alongside joey and the Animeman, all we need now to complete the trifecta is the CdawVA rebranding into the Monkeman, and the collection is complete.

That's wild, I hadn't even realized almost no isekai have ended, though I remembered Overly Cautious Hero did have an ending (or at least it felt like a conclusion)
@marshallseldon42002 жыл бұрын
"We need an isekai to have an ending" can also apply to any anime that has 1 season and never continue while the source material has much more story to tell.

Those shows are called "advertising" and were never intended to continue, just make you seek out the source material. It's part of the continually blinkered media landscape in Japan, which just doesn't internally recognize that a: there's an international audience that wants their stuff, and so b: doesn't translate the source material of 75% of advertising shows into any other language, or does so on a timescale that's prohibitive to any kind of fanbase. It's amazing how much money they leave on the table because the only audience they're geared to consider is statuette buying weebs in Japan.

@@westrim Exactly. Lots of isekai have endings, Konosuba & Mushoku Tensei included, you just probably won't see them animated. Fingers crossed though.

Isekai is older then a decade. Digimon is an isekai and that came out in the 90s
@CABRALFAN272 жыл бұрын
The thing about Isekai is that, not only is the base concept interesting enough that a relatively bog-standard take on it can still be interesting if executed well, but there's also so many interesting ways to play with that concept. Re:Zero, KonoSuba, that fucking Medieval Cold War one you mentioned that sounds fantastic, the list goes on. That's the reason that the Isekai genre is so popular and pervasive IMO; For as rough as it can be, there's a lot of potential for diamonds there.

Nice video overall! Summarises everything pretty well. I do wanna make one comment about your point at 10:31, which is that some series do have a proper ending, but are very long. One example of this is Ascendance of a Bookworm (my personal favorite light novel series of all time). The LN has 31 volumes. 3 seasons of the anime have gone through 7 of them. For AoB specifically, the web novel was close to done by the time the LN started, and the LN was pretty far in by the time the anime rolled around. Other series, however, might purposefully drag on just to make more money, but it's possible they have something similar; just wanted to mention it.
