In May of 2011, just weeks after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that triggered the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant,
The World’s Marco Werman reported from the port city of Ishinomaki, where more than 3,000 people had lost their lives.
He took listeners along the ruined fishing port, past shipwrecks washed ashore and by homes turned into rubble and cars smashed like tin cans. He spoke with Aya Saeki, who was 37 years old and living in a house just a block from the ocean when the sea flattened her neighborhood. Even as the rubble was still being cleared, she wanted to return to her home. So did her mother, who felt closely tied to the city where her own parents had grown up.

Thank you to Marco and his camera crew for the video. I'm so accustomed to hearing your voice from my radio it was a little jarring tho. My favorite segment on NPR. I hope the family reclaimed their house and their community. ☮️
