Can I just say, growing up on the east coast in schools I always saw the poster of the white Australian Digger in WW1 yelling Coo-Ee and I was never taught that this was an Indigenous custom. I'm pretty disappointed by the lack of education involving Indigenous history when I went through school, but this in particular has saddened me because that poster of a strong soldier yelling coo-ee was inspirational to me, but now I know for fact that it may have been an appropriation. I know it sounds silly an naive but I hope this awesome practice was shown to all our boys by our Indigenous soldiers and made uniquely Aussie. I hope it wasn't stolen and rather a beautiful integration of culture that formed modern Aus.

This is the oldest unbroken human culture living today -20 to 30.000 years. This is one tribe showing traditions they have. 100s more exist. The have paintins as old or older than the pre-hitoric cave painting in France and Aboriginals still know the meanings of the paintings. Bill Bryson said in his book, Australia: Imagine being able to walk through the cave paintings of France and have the people who painted them or the descendents explain them to you, the Aboriginals of Australia can do this with paintings that are just as old or older.

Given his hyperactive, ego driven personality, this was quite respectful for iSS. He is constantly too eager to be the best even when doing things that aren’t about being the best and are more about connection, being accepted and equal. He didn’t seem to understand some things and was trying to guess what he was suposed to do, even when no instruction had been given because he wasn’t mean’t to do anything. He wanted to put his head in the fire to get the smoke then put his foot too far into the bucket to get the most smoke. It’s good that he was trying and wanted to do it right but he would have done “better” if he could have just relaxed. He seemed to think that the country the Aborginal guy was referring to was “Dairy” country and I’m guessing someone called out to him later so he tried to clarrify. He thought he had to do improvised dancing when the Digeridoo was playing around him because he couldn’t just stand there and wait to be instructed. He did the Roo dance fairly well given he had just been shown once but he didn’t seem to understand what animal the emu dance was for but he still thought he nailed it…. You know your ego is overblown when you can mess something up that isn’t meant to be a competition and yet you boost your own ego but claiming you did it well. That said, he did try and to some extent he both cant help his personality and it seems to be working fairly well for him so far.

I really resent how badly our country has done celebrating aboriginal culture.. these kind of ceremonial experiences should have been a part of my education in the same way that the haka is learned in nz but all we got was a couple of dreamtime childrens books and a lesson on dot painting.

Aaand thats enough. Grown up in Australia my whole life and while its nice to learn about the culture majority of my class and I were not interested in doing it more than occasionally. Maybe should be an optional thing for kids/teens who want to do it.
