That's what I been saying bro! I got both (og sp1200 and s2400) of them and it is the same or nearly identical. Sp1200 fanatics act like it's blasphemy to say that s2400 or any other shit sounds same or nearly close enough. Sp1200 group.. Just sensitive. That's why I ain't paying due the new Rossum Sp, he should have came out with that decades ago before all the copycats came out and had enough time to hone in the dsp or the sound to be nearly identical if not the same. Great video 👏👏👏

Yo I’m just happy someone at least made the first steps on this, and thank you! Off top, just judging by this, there IS a difference. However, I think I only hear it because I know what they are and see it side by side. If I was blindfolded I could never tell and I doubt anyone, especially after a full mix, could in all honesty really say “Oooh that’s not an SP1200.” And if they do, unless they are Large Professor or Marley Marl, and even that might be a stretch, they are probably lying. The OG will forever hold its own and there is a difference, but it’s subtle. Everyone also seems to misconstrue that the Isla is a “rival”, when in fact it was actually designed as a modern take and a homage to the original. It’s just sad that people have became so elitist they really forgot it’s what you do with it, not what you have.

The ISLA has 10x more ability for modern producing the SP1200 is the same as it was in 1987 with a few upgrades that Forat and Jazzcat had done for years...Its the OG though and holds it place in history.

We are obsessed with the past because we know there's no future. I think everyone who claims they hear a difference or that "the original is better" wouldn't be able to tell a blindfolded test. It's the same thing as the Prophet 6 vs Prophet 5 argument. All those blind tests nearly everyone got them wrong and those that claimed they didn't are lying. Then the argument was "Well the Prophet 5 just has that special something." Yes, it's called nostalgia. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Making a decision based on emotion or feeling an emotional connection with an instrument is perfectly valid but at least be honest about it.
@HarrySteed
@HarrySteed 2 жыл бұрын
I allow me to answer you in an exchange as a good friend. We can indeed say blindfolded there will be no difference but I can tell you that the Sp Og that I also own, in comparison has quite a bit more low frequency at sampling. Is this due to the deterioration of the components over time? I do not know. We are surely talking about the same de la Isla s2400 in a few years...I'm convinced of it because it also destroys everything in its path 💥 despite some software bug reports light from some owners.

The SP1200 is worth getting too as an Investment or collector piece. Dave Rossum is a pioneer and I got this to keep in honor of all the legends in hip hop who rocked them 2.5 seconds of sampling into timeless creations. ISLA honored Rossum by making the S2400 and wanted to create a modern successor because in 2019 Rossum had zero plans to ever make another SP1200. He could have made a modern successor himself but for some reason took his company in another direction until ISLA asked his permission to create their unit. He made them change the name from SP2400 so rhey used the S2400 name for Sampling using two DACs a 24bit which breaks down to 16bit/48khz and a 16bit which discard the least important 4 bits down to 12.

its easy to make a beat on the isla s2400 as it loads a little faster. I prefer the s2400 for samples because theres more time and when your recording a pattern you add samples without it sometimes cutting out other sounds on you like on the og SP 1200. As for drums the sp 1200 all day it sounds a lot better on the low end and more grimey than the more polished s2400. if i had to choose one id prolly pick the isla cause of it features livelooping timestreching lpf hpf bit rate optional 16-1. But the sound is better on the og sp 1200 or the rossum sp 1200 hands down. Solid video! Get both if you have the money they wont be around forever very limited

Man, alot of misinformation on the S2400. I grew up on the 1200's sound, and always wanted to have it as part of the studio. But it's always been crazy expensive, even more so here in Europe. I've seen alot of negative talk on the s2400, but to hear somebody who actually owns both be very clear about it is really good to hear. If it has 'that sound' down, that's all i needed to know, thanks for this.

I cant really comment on what is 'better' (ive only used the s2400) and who cares tbh..........I used to own an MPC60 and what i will say is - i never got that machine soul feeling off the s2400 that i had with the 60.....It did a good job at the aliasing (and certainly looks the part) but samples disappearing, white noise and crashes killed it for me People who want that definitive 100% knock/swing/simplicty/quality - buy the SP1200.......Those on more a budget and want a gazzilion more features and roughly the same aliased ring- get an S2400......I do find it funny how the S2400 lot have changed the narrative from 'yeah simplicity is key - restrictions breed creativity' are now 'well i have all these bells and whistles because its 2022 and its gonna make more better', like bore off.......You can get a similar sound off the Lo Hiss app for a few bucks......Its all about what user experience you want and are willing to pay for.

Any new company will have a few glitches or defects and even old companies. I just received my Rossum and it came with the 0 button on the keypad pushes back and pinched under the metal casing. ISLA has the best customer support and those problematic units were all addressed and repaired or replaced. Alai has never been this good and they are a big company. Rossum is also a small company and addressed my issue where I can fix it myself which I requested to do or they can fix it and ship it back. I love both units and proud to own both but you're right I can do all of this in Logic, Ableton, Reason using various LoFi plug ins like SP950 which is the easiest but its no damn fun. I hate being in the box the whole time. I even got an Akai Force which is an Amazing standalone unit that works like Ableton and cam save in ALS format opening up in Ableton when I want to finish with Vocals.

I probably would've grabbed a Rossum if it was more competitively priced, just for the sound, look & feel. But the S2400 was a no brainer, and since it arrived in December it has had two major updates dealing with issues and features. I couldn't live without the midi control now. Not sure if the Rossum has midi tracks, but that's a massive plus for me with the 2400. These arguments are futile anyway, even if they sound alike people are emotionally attached to their gear 🤣

The Rossum is exactly the same as the EMU SP1200 from 1987 except it has an SD drive that emulates Floppies, 2 Filters installed in the back that can be used on Outputs 1&2, Sample input monitoring, LED screen that changes colors and 20 seconds of sample time. It looks, feels and sounds the same. I'm glad to have both. Gear does create a feeling when making Music that Software doesn't have to me.

The New SP. The S2400. All have the SAME EXACT CHIPS with a different model number because of company copy rights.😑 You got kats going around saying that Emu Sp1200 sounds better than the Rossum Sp1200?!🤔 As if he didn't make both and remembered what he did?!🤔 Once again Stop The BS!!! I can make a top knotch state of the art digital sound like a dusty neglected 78rpm record from 1930. Once again the Drum,Sampler or Daw dont make the Music. You do!!! @tanza I can open up both units and you will discover a mainboard with potentially different tact switches attached, pad set up, etc but they both have the SSI chip. The Rossum is really copying its old mainboard technology which is why the SD card drive runs on HFE format which is Floppy emulation while the S2400 uses high throughput SD allowing me to use 1TB cards loading a song with a 25 minute sample 10x faster than my SP loads a song with 2.5 seconds of sampling on 10 banks or 2 banks for that matter. Its still 1987 technology with a few modifications like input monitoring, filters on channel 1&2 and an increase of sample memory from 10 to 20 seconds, nothing groundbreaking here but the chip used to give it that SP sound is in both ISLA and Rossum's units and thats really all that counts. ISLA takes care of the rest of vintage SP modeling in the software which really just gives you the ability to use Classic 16 or 32 tunings which is all the SP has or I can select Semitones like my MPC uses. I don't need to speed up Records to 45bpm I can change the tuning and it does it for me. I can also load 16 or 24bit WAV files from my Computer via USB and Resample them internally to 12 bit, basically the S2400 is an SP1200 on Steroids with all the other things it does.

When I listened really closely to SAPs OG 1200 vs S2400 I could hear some differences but they were really negligible in a mix. The S2400 actually had slightly fuller mids, the OG was crisper in the highs, didn't notice much difference in the low end.
@luch1112
@luch1112 2 жыл бұрын
Rossum created the OG SP-12 and 1200 so due to its legendary history he can market it as a reissue of the beloved E-mu OG and it actually is the same with a few added features. Its a cult classic now so $4000 is a bargain in comparison to a used OG on eBay from $8000 on up. The S2400 does more with the same sound and that seems to bother so many Old Heads who used the SP since the 90's. I used one since 98' myself but I love new twists on vintage gear if the company doing it is creating it out of love and not a fast buck like Behringer seems to do often. ISLA nailed it

@@777wisdom7 Have you heard it in person? Because it doesn't sound muddy to me at any level. It's just the SP1200 had more clarity in the highs. The S2400 had more presence in the low mids. The S1200 had more in the very bottom which I think has to do with the DACs being 16 vs 12 bit. Ironically the S2400 sounds freaking great through the USB Audio. I know I sound suspect even saying that. I swear I'm not a fan of USB audio vs the TR/S but seriously it's crispier (I almost want to smack myself for saying it but in this case it's the truth). I and another beta tester had the same exact response. The other beta tester is SAP by the way and he had both against each other in a head to head.

Are you referring to after you dumped it into your DAW for final Edit and Mixdown or do you mean straight out the unit?? the 1200 sounds like it has just a touch more of that classic downsampled sound at the lowest pitch imo...but also Rossum gets the win for me just because the guy behind Isla's attitude stinks (his name is Brad). A few years back I was trying to purchase the Kordbot, but it was on back-order. What he didn't tell people was that he was still making the units as he was getting the orders. When it was about 3 weeks past the date that it was supposed to ship, I simply emailed him for an update on my order, and he out of nowhere just sent me a refund and blocked my email. When I went on Isla's FB page to try to get answer as to why he couldn't just tell people what was up with their orders, he blocked me from that too, and had a bunch of people from the page (who I assume were his buddies) bully me & send death threats. So it's fuck Brad & Isla Instruments forever
