A family member was in "the game" back in the 90's. He just flipped 5 birds. He said he wanted to get into hip hop. I took him to a music store and told him he needed a SP12. He made some notes and told the salesman that he will be back. He shows up to my front porch a month later and says "yo, they they didn't have anymore SP12s so they sold me an SP1200". I sold my SP-1200 for $6,000 on EBay several years ago mind you I bought it in 1994 for $2,000 it's a rare gem with many limitations.... If you weren't following the artists of the time and learning their secrets like speeding up a vinyl record to attain more sampling time and a grittier sound then you would be lost today. The tuning capabilities still have yet to be touched by MPCs it's a real shame they don't have slide tuning more readily available like the SP.. it's a true boom bap machine because it made your snares snap and your kicks thump.

@@DyReckProductions was definitely a dope bonus when some of the team formally at e-mu went over to akai and added that slider to the 2000 which was actually to supposed e-mu’s SP1600 but they killed the idea .
@flyingjunkies2 жыл бұрын
@@philtyrich1 @Dyreck yup right exactly ... we ended up with that "benign" slider in the 2000 that barely functioned it was almost impossible to get it into tune mode 😹 ... mind you I loved my 200XL to death, I had it midi connected to my SP1200 and it was a killa combo. File management was a nightmare by today's standards. You had an SP1200 Floppy loaded up and over MIDI and you could trigger the MPC to play a beat which synched up perfectly 😎 and remember this was usually saved to an Iomega Zip disk 😁 ahh the good ole dayz.

I now have my OG EMU SP1200, an ISLA S2400 and a Rossum SP1200 re-issue. The Rossum is definitely an improvement on the original design and offers a lot in the way of upgrades while keeping the same sound and work flow. I like the S2400 also. It's similar in work flow but has many newer features not available on the SP1200 at less than half the price. The only complaint I have is I wish they all considered releasing these 10 to 15 years earlier.
@stansteez2 жыл бұрын
Do you use these machines for fun or serious work? Because it's kinda hard to imagine how to track the joints produced on there into the DAW without a lot of additional gear. Or can you do it via USB with the ISLA S2400?
@TapeWormOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@stansteez Both, serious work and fun. I use channel jacks and midi cable. I grew up using this tech and know the ins and out including it's relationship to newer hard and softwares. I acknowledge that newer tech can do much more and increase your output but I appreciate the sound and feel of the SP1200. Companies have tried to copy the vibe in newer machines and always seem to fall short. Ultimately, it ain't for everybody just those who appreciate it. What really matters is people making only GOOD MUSIC no matter what you use. ✊🏾

For those that didn't know I just realized that E-MU stands for "Electro-Music" hense Rossum Electro-Music. I always wonder what E-MU meant all these years. Dave actually tried to by his brand back from Creative Labs but they said nope as they are stll using it to make headphones which is kinda lame for such a well known brand in the Synthesizer and Sampler community. This reissue is probably more for people already owning a sp and want to back up. Or nostalgic people that sold their sp's. I guess you can only want to spend so much money if you already spent many hours on this machine, and have the sp1200 state of mind. It's a one of a kind piece of gear and having the chance to buy it brand new is meaningful for a lot of people.

@@TheAdfk That makes sense to me. I've not really got any interest in buying a Rossum or an E-Mu SP1200 as I never saw a musician use one in an actual studio back in the days. I saw Oberheim DX, DMX, in the eighties and Akai MPC60, 60 II, 3000, in the nineties, being used before I bought the 2000, and that's because every beat making musician of note in Reggae was using a MPC back then. It makes sense that if someone is coming from a Hip Hop background and they saw the SP being used a lot back in the days then of course a brand new SP from Rossum is number one on the wish list

I laugh thinking about these "reissues". It's reissued alright... it released with the same issues as before... it's expensive ASF! This thing went around the moon and people still can't afford it....and just like before this is why people flocked to the MPC. The MPC is what killed the SP 1200 in the first place. BUT It's dope that Mr. EMU came out the wood works to release his legend. This time though the people buying it are doing so because they respect the legacy and the machine. It's not about a consumer product to sit on a shelf in a store but a product you've always wanted to own and finally now got a chance to add it to your collection.

Why don’t they just make a smaller affordable version for the masses. 1200-1500. I know isla has its own version but why not a smaller one for the masses?
