Across the Muslim world, religion plays an increasingly prominent role in politics. Is there something inherent in Islam that lends itself to this politicisation, and what role should the faith play in modernising governments in the Muslim world? A scholar of Islamic law and a leading Middle Eastern media editor come together for what promises to be a fascinating panel discussion
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

No-one discussed the central problem. Most religions are full of heinous ideas, but Christian's, Jews, Buddhists etc view religious texts as written by human prophets who are fallible and that allows us to deviate from the written texts, but Muslims believe the Koran is the absolute word of God and therefore deviation is not allowed.

You may not be aware that our countries Puritan colonists outlawed all Bibles in the New World except their version of the King James Bible. They cut out several books of the Bible that are still not found in versions here but are in the British King James Bible. The Catholic church believes the Bible is God's word alone for a long time. Some sects still take the Bible literally so it is not just some of the Muslims that believe their religious text is God's word that cannot be deviated from.

Mr Brown's challenge to the label of 'progressive' we appoint to the West is redundant. The West is considers itself progressive, not 'progressed'. We do not suppose ourselves to be perfect. The verb 'progressive' is continuous, it expresses an action still in motion, so naturally the West is still riddled with social/political issues, as we're a society still striving to improve ourselves.

This Oxford Union presentation is one of the finest attempts at bringing the simple truth to the viewers. It is thus sad to note the hatred in the comments section. If one were to view this presentation with an open mind and an unprejudiced heart - I say that in that order - one can connect with the truth that is being presented. No one is saying that Muslims are the best, or that Muslims are perfect beings, but to blame a religion ?! Doesn't that say how insecure and prejudiced these people are within themselves ? Yes, there is definitely a lot of dead wood stuck on to the Ship of Islam - but does that deserve such obscene and foul-mouthed language of hatred and abuse ? If you don't like Islam, so be it. At least be courteous to your ownselves by using language that doesn't betray your insecurities and your ignorances, with all due respect. We are what we think. And our words speak for ourselves only.

So very true. The same can be said about Christianity. The Crusades, burning of heretics within Christianity. Let's not forget the Cathars in France when a pope ordered a crusade against other Christian people who worked hard to follow the example of Christ's life and words. But they believed that you could pray to God directly without a priest so they were destroyed for it.
@esratasneem1113

@@blackmancool9983 Apparently, you know Islam just from media education. I do understand that you are neither a scholar on it, nor its follower. You don't need to be both or either to know if you are right, or, if you are just prejudiced. All you need to know is to read. If you can do that, just read it from its original source. And if you can see, just see it for your own self. You may then wonder how you ever thought negative about a Prophet called Muhammed, peace be upon him. A Prophet who believed in Jesus and Virgin Mary, peace be upon them. Don't take my word on it. Just check it out yourself from authentic sources. The genuineness of your source will direct you to the truth.

@@nancykraus5127 Yes, believers over the ages have been oppressed, tortured and killed for just believing that one could pray directly to The Almighty.... The Story of the Sleepers is specially mentioned in the Noble Qur'an. Im from Malaysia as well. Political Islam? Why not? but of course, it has to address some key points such as 1) Minority religion right to practice and propagate including to Muslims 2) Freedom to practise any religion, freedom from religion and leave the religion. 3) LGBT rights including to have a family and career. 4) Minority political rights. If political Islam addresses all the above clearly than secular liberal politics for the above issues, I would say why not. Name no matter, content is.

Wow thats quite condescending. Discussion about "Islam and Politics" off course it has to be Muslims debating it, that was the whole point of the discussion. It would have been much more interesting if proper Muslims Scholars, Shia n Sunnis, were debating it. Although these two gentlemen did a fair job but they also lack knowledge of Shariah. And we have debates like these within our communities where issues are debated by Scholars who might be inclined towards a more extremist view n Scholars who might have a more moderate view, and somewhere in between the two views most of us individuals identify ourselves.

Ali Khan I just meant it would have been interesting to hear a non-Muslim perspective. Obviously there are many different viewpoints within Islam, but there’s still going to be some bias towards Islam from that standpoint. If there was some fault with Islam, which there may or may not be, Muslims would be much less inclined to point it out.

Currently 30 minutes in and wondering where the debate is since the two speakers are coming from an Islamic perspective so where is the debate, the counter, the rebuttal? Not sure I'll spend more time listening to a discussion from a singular perspective since how do I know if they are telling the truth and being accurate. Not the best approach from Oxford Uni to have a platform for Islam. Fine in an Islamic society but not one billed for a wider audience.

But we have been foretold of you, such people, in the Noble Qur'an that "some people have chosen to put a covering on their hearts, vision and hearing. So it is equal to them whether you speak to them or not for they have no perception". And I tell you we Muslims are not tasked to convert. All we have to do is tell the message and leave you to think and, or ponder. Indeed Islam is not for the dumb and/or people so indoctrinated that they could perceive no good other than what they already know. I hope the Allah give such people the strength to at least challenge themselves.

Islam is not ONLY a religion in the connotation of the word. It is a total way of life. You need to know more about Islam to appreciate my statement. For example, Islamic Economics is much better than the so called Western Economics thought. India reached its apex when it was ruled by Muslim Mughal Empire. The sciences and mathematics were enriched by the Muslims while the Christian Europe was burning scientist and free thinkers on stake especially during the inquisition. Sadly, many people restrict their understanding of Islam on the aggressive mis-representation of the West about Islam.

@dreamland Its that simple because Anglo-saxon colonialists imposed their language on us and hampered natural development of Asia and Africa. So we have every right to wish them same, as they did to us but we don't wish same violence, torture and sufferings to them. We just want to snatch from them the right to speak their language so that they realise what they did to people of Asia, Africa and latin America.

@dreamland First, All knowledge and technologies are common heritage of all human beings so there is no question my technology and your technology, western or estern technology. Second, i am not against learning any language per se be it English, French, Arabic or Mandarin but i am against colonial imposition of any language on any other language. What English or French did to people of Asia or Africa is not a benign teaching of French or English instead they imposed French and English by force and attached education, employement, upward mobility and respect in society with English and French and made all colonialized people hate their languages cultures and heritage. Colonialism has not ended yet, in all post colonial societies prestige and employment are still attached to English and French and still natives are being insulted on speaking their mother tongues. Call me a Jihadist, redical or whatever but if you support such kind of terrible colonialism which is hampering natural growth of our societies, you are just another brainwash child of colonialism not a fellow human being to us, who don't understand what is going on with weak nations and who don't stand with all oppressed people regardless of their race colour or religion.

Just imagie they are doing this with 9th largest language of world what would be fate of other little 7000 thousand languages of the world. They want to make a world which blindly imitate English or French Spanish or other two or three dominant languages. Brainwashing through Hollywood/Propoganda electronic and social Media outlets. 1. Colonail Imposed Kings, Colonial trained and colonial imposed Military dictators, Military bureaucracies, English/French civilian bureaucracies, English/French imposed Feudal lords and now Capitalist corporate Mafias. 2.Imposition of English and French languages on common people of all post colonial societies. These colonial trained elite classes are more loyal to their western masters than to their people. They deposit all their looted wealth in western banks and their families are settled in west. 3.Ongiong Western economic colonialim through IMF/WB/Private Banks/State Banks(Economic hitmen) Multinationals. 4. Bombing and destruction of African and Middle eastern countries(libya, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen etc). 5. Constatnt propganda of superirity of white race and westen civilization. This propoganda started during colonial period by imparting racial superiroity and inferiority theeories in English and French education systems and reached to its zenith in our global age through Holloywood/western electronic Media outlets and social media outlets. When you make people hate their own languages, colour, religion, traditions, customs, dress codes and everything native then who will want to stay back in their hated lands????Everyone will love to go to supposed paradise in west constructed by focre of sheer propoganda and constant lies. The list of crimies of colonial powers is much longer but they block you if you expose them.

Consider 12 similarities between God and the United States Government: (1) God is a Spirit - cannot be seen or touched. The U.S. Government is a spirit - cannot be seen or touched. (2) We read about God on papers - the Bible. We read about the U.S. Government on papers - the United States Constitution. (3) God not only create, He also destroys. The U.S. Government not only create, it also destroys. (4) God makes Laws to govern His people. The U.S. Government makes Laws to govern its people. (5) God has the powers to forgive and to restore His enemies. The U.S. Government has the powers to forgive and to restore its enemies. (6) God has the powers to work His wills in and through the lives of people. The U.S. Government has the powers to work its wills in and through the lives of people. (7) God is a “Trinity”, because within the ‘Oneness of God’ there are three different Natures: (1) Father, (2) Word of God, and (3) Spirit of God. The U.S. Government is a “Trinity”, because within the ‘Oneness of the U.S. Government’ there are three different natures: (1) Executive Branch of Government, (2) Legislature Branch of Government, and (3) Judicial Branch of Government. (8) The word “Trinity” is not mentioned in the Bible, but the Bible revealed God as a “trinity” in whose ‘oneness’ the three different Natures of God are co-existing and are co-equal. The word “Trinity” is not mentioned in the United States Constitution, but the United States Constitution revealed the U.S. Government as a “trinity” in whose ‘oneness’ the three different natures of the U.S. Government are co-existing and are co-equal. (9) Each one of the three different Natures of God is God, Himself. Examples: (1) God’s Nature called “Father” is God, Himself; (2) God’s Nature called “Word of God” is God, Himself; and (3) God’s Nature called “Spirit of God” is God, Himself. Each one of the three different natures of the U.S. Government is the U.S. Government, itself. Examples: (1) The U.S. Government’s nature called “Executive Branch of Government” is the U.S. Government, itself; (2) the U.S. Government’s nature called “Legislature Branch of Government” is the U.S. Government, itself; (3) the U.S. Government’s nature called “Judicial Branch of Government” is the U.S. Government, itself. (10) God took one of His three Natures called “Word of God”, clothed or covered Him in human skin (Jesus), and sent Him into the world to save lives. The U.S. Government took one of its three natures called “Executive Branch of Government”, clothed or covered it in human skin (soldiers/militaries/CIA/ambassadors), and sent them into the world (Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan) to save lives. (11) God’s Nature called “Word of God” (operating inside human skin - Jesus) correctly said, “I am in my Father and my Father is in me. I and my Father are one. If you have seen me, you have seen my Father.” The U.S. Government’s nature called “Executive Branch” (operating inside human skin - soldiers/militaries/CIA/ambassadors) may correctly say, “I am in the U.S. Government and the U.S. Government is in me. I and the U.S. Government are one. If you have seen me, you have seen the U.S. Government.” (12) Deuteronomy 6:4 reads, “Hear O Israel, the LORD, our God is one LORD.” But God is a Trinity. Deuteronomy 6:4 could also be read, “Hear O American people, the government, our U.S. Government is one government.” But the U.S. Government is a trinity. Message of the Bible is acceptably simple: God is one. Within His “Oneness”, there are three different Natures: (1) Father, (2) Word of God, and (3) Spirit of God. One day, God in His infinite wisdom and powers, took one of His three Natures called “Word of God” or “Word”, and placed Him inside the Womb of the Virgin Mary. Nine months later, a Child is born. The Child, naturally, is both the “Son of God” and the “Son of Man. The Apostle John, in two verses, explains it this way: John 1:1 reads, “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” and in John 1:14 the Apostle added this: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His Glory, the Glory as the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and full of truth.” In other words, Jesus is one of God’s Natures who is covered in human skin. That is what the Prophet Isaiah meant when he said, “The Child will be the Father of Himself.” Isaiah 6:9 reads, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given…His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” The trinity does not seek to add unto that which already exists; but rather to make distinctions among its different natures. Example: The “Atom” already exists. The trinity makes distinctions among its three different natures: (1) Protons, (2) Neutrons, and (3) Electrons. As a human being, you are made in “the Image and the Likeness of God” - (Genesis 1:26). God is a trinity, so are you; because within your “oneness”, you have three different natures: (1) body, (2) spirit, and (3) soul. Your body is you, your spirit is you, and your soul is you. But your body is not the same as your spirit, and your spirit is not the same as your soul. However, each you (body, spirit, and soul), by itself, is actually you. In fact, on the day you die, people will refer to your body as your “remains” (left-behind or left-over). If your body is your “left-over” or “left-behind”, then where did the rest of you go? This can only make sense if within your “oneness” you are more than one you. And in this case, you are a “three-in-one” - you are a trinity. The Science of Natural Laws support the trinity. It states, “Whatever is ‘one’ is a unity of many different natures or components (things).” Examples: The water molecule is one. It is a unity of two different natures: (1) Hydrogen and (2) Oxygen or (H2O). Time, within its “oneness”, is a unity of three different natures: (1) Past, (2) Present, and (3) Future. Space is one in three natures, or dimensions, or (3Ds): (1) height, (2) width, and (3) depth. The universe is a unity of three different natures: (1) Time, (2) Space, and (3) Phenomenon - everything we can see, hear, feel, smell, and taste.” This is full display in the very first verse of the Holy Bible - Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning (Time), God created the heavens (Space), and the earth (Matter / Phenomenon).”

I think the first guy to speak was the only who had a point. The west has exacerbated the problem by not respecting the sovereignty of other nations well enough. However it's disingenuous to suggest that the problems in the middle east have NOTHING to do with Islam. If most of the people in a region support a certain kind of theocracy then it's preposterous to claim that it has nothing to do with that religion. If the society then experiences high levels of corruption and oppression as a direct result of specific unfair laws of the theocracy in question (like in current day Iran for example), then that also has something to do with the religion, especially if the law is concretely written down in religious text and can't be changed easily. If someone from that country ever suggests to change the law, then opponents will use the RELIGION to refuse doing so. To claim that this kind of situation is JUST about geopolitics and power is very disingenuous. Specific laws have specific effects in society. If you've set up a system of government that clashes with human nature and leads to horrific oppression in 90% of cases, then it's not a surprise when again the same thing happens. What this man is doing is similar to someone blaming western colonization for the fact that communism doesn't work and usually leads to human rights abuses. Sharia, in any form seen so far, IS oppressive. Obviously Sharia has something to do with Islam. Yes, the west has a lot to do with fucking up the middle east. HOWEVER, for a society to be successful, they also must choose a system of government that actually works. You can't just blame colonialism and US intervention for being in a bad situation when you're also making terrible decisions backed up by a holy book from 1000 years ago rather than evidence of what actually works.
