One of my friends and a group of fishermen seen a Great White about a mile off Laxey. He was waterskiing and seen some fishermen all looking over one side of the boat. He signalled to his driver to drag him over to take a look at what the fishermen were looking at. As they got closer he seen a Great White chewing on the nets or something on the side of the fishing boat. My friend was so terrified he never returned to the sea again and sold his boat. As for timescale it was about 25 years ago. And his description when I said it may have been a Mako was "it was as big as a basking shark, bigger than his boat"

When I did a degree in Marine Biology in the 1990s my research indicated no reason for there not to be Great White sharks in UK waters. Porbeagle and Makos are both found here and they are relatives of the GW shark and also share the same cold-water physiological adaptations. Not only do GW sharks have the same cold-water physiology as Makos and Porbeagles but they are far bigger animals. This in itself is an adaptation to the cold; it's called gigantothermy. It's the reason why mammoths were bigger than modern elephants. All other things being equal, a big animal copes with the cold better than a small one. I'd agree that if GW sharks are in UK waters then they'd be migratory, just seasonal visitors. I always argued the presence of GW sharks in UK waters with my lecturers, and, to be fair to most of them, they admitted there was no real scientific reason for them not to be here, as the resources are adequate and the water temperature is well within their tolerance.

There was a great white shark seen around Arisaig, many years ago. We have 40 sharks in British waters. On KZbin there was a group of kayakers who were down at Arisaig. And saw a great white shark around the island's. And they saw half a seal lying on the sand. There's Orca's is Scottish water's. I saw them while sailing through from Arisaig to Mallaig and saw a pod of female Orca's. Circling the boat I was on, it was an amazing experience

I used to visit Scillies in late 70s, early 80s. Seal colony there. We saw what appeared to be either a bite scar or chain/boat prop damage on a large seal. I talked to the RN diver who discovered the Association wreck and he had seen many sharks around the Scillies, mainly the blue porbeagle thresher trio but also bigger fish, whilst diving which we agreed were most likely basking. Interesting waters around Scillies.

I've been completely fascinated/ obsessed with sharks since I was a kid. I live in hartlepool and spent all my summers swimming in the sea safe in the knowledge we had no sharks cos I was told so. Then I saw a fisherman in his pick up with a porbeagle in the back! I've been convinced we have great whites in our waters since I read an article in the 90's or early 00's in loaded magazine. They spoke to an Aussie shark hunter who they apparently based Quint on in jaws and he replied when asked about them in UK waters that we have the right temp and plenty of their fave food so what makes us think they're not already here. I found the swimming baths to be reasonably priced 😄 good luck with your research, I'd love to do the same,I hope u get over to the North East some time.

If they were moving north to feed on seals during certain periods around the UK,they'd have been sighted,it's really as simple as that,maybe not regularly but there would be confirmed records. Part of the reason there a mystery in the Mediterranean is because the monk seals died out so they feed in deeper waters on tuna,dolphins etc.
@elite_riddimzgaming34272 жыл бұрын
Would there though bare in mind every 'big' shark sighting gets labeled a basking shark almost instantly around the uk...maybe to stop fear maybe it's true.....but who's actually looking to decide👀👀
@rawdog3142 жыл бұрын
@@elite_riddimzgaming3427 every big shark sighting that comes with any kind of evidence in the form of pictures or video is a basking shark though,i disagree about stopping fear,the media and certain individuals love nothing more than scaremongering about sharks because fear mongering sells,every summer there's some bullsh#t story about great whites invading our shores. A big shark that frequents our waters regularly versus a shark that has never been recorded in our waters ever,I think basking sharks are getting correctly identified.

@@rawdog314 yet anywhere else in the world they follow the food and the east of England and west coast of Scotland is where the food is in highest population im not saying they are here but its very possible they are and there is evidence to prove it.....hey took them months to out covid to the public and the evidence of it..... why can't they hide a shark sighting and make out its something else.... the wool is always pulled over most peoples eyes so its a fair assumption to say there is proof....we just don't know it yet 😂
@rawdog3142 жыл бұрын
@@elite_riddimzgaming3427 that's a bit simplistic though isn't it,it's not just a case of them following seal populations or parts of britian would be like the farallon Islands,there's obviously reasons why they don't come to Britain (in any significant numbers) and by all accounts thats what baffles scientists more. Maybe one of the reasons is how rare and endangered the North east population of white sharks are,they are extremely rare and probably the most endangered population of white sharks in the world. I live in Australia and if there's white sharks about they are easily found and documented,some places more common than others for sure but there's always a bit of sound evidence.

OK - io... ARE YOU SAT DOWN ?...Throughout my youth I enjoyed boating & water skiing going out with the Bayliner Bowrider.. and also sea fishing - I had a few small fishing boats in my 20s/30s at Holyhead Anglesey Back in 80's. Occasionally a crowd of us would take trips South and charter a fishing boat for the day. I recall one launch back in '85 that we took in late June out from Newlyn Harbour. It was a really beautiful day... We headed out a few miles to where land was just almost out of view. The open water was very calm... the sun was the only thing you could see in the sky.. and the temp was in the high 70's F... (which is what we measured it in back then ..lol) Ok so we are ready to fish... I was sat facing the helm with my back to the sun - I reached down into the water to feel its temperature and OMFG ! - I saw a huge Great White that was literally the size of the boat we were in just cruise by like a submarine ... I pointed shouting to the guys ..." LOOK ! - A FKN MASSIVE GREAT WHITE !" Well, they all laughed thinking I was joking...The skipper said it was probably a basking shark ?... I said to him..."I know you're an experienced skipper but I know my sharks bud...and that was a fucking huge Great White ! To this day I still see guys from that trip who even now say I was pranking them...Truth is - I wasn't... I know what I saw that day !

I'm down in South West Wales, grew up in Pembrokeshire. The seal colonies around here are pretty big. I'd be surprised if Whites are not in the UK. The amount of scent in the water from the seals would surely drag them in from Cornwall up through the Irish Sea as they do from Mexico, through California and up to B.C. The same on the US East coast, Carolinas to Rhode Island. The temperature, geography and food supply conditions are similar.

I think the only way to successfully confirm would be to corelate all local data and compare to favourable seasons in known world hotspots: water temperature, currents, prey habitat and breeding habits, especially in relation to the Med Whites and their cycle. Great whites have more then likely been in Uk waters for a long time.However three reasons exist for why we have no concrete evidence.First, because the shallow coastal areas are very developed and busy, the sharks stay offshore.Second, because during winter months it’s too cold for them they only come up during summer months, following the movement of fishes and other prey.Third, they avoid the less seal inhabited and more intensively used places.Hence why many of the sightings are from Cornwall, west Scotland etc.Places where the jet stream goes to, where lots of seals and prey is available, and where the sharks following the currents would reach after hugging Europe up from the Mediterranean mouth.

A fin claimed by onlookers to belong to a shark in the sea at Cleveleys on Wednesday, September 7 (Image: Lea Sara Jeffery) Its presence in an area is positive, as it means there are healthy fish populations for it to feed on. If, for some reason, a diver or a snorkeler should be so lucky to see one in the water, the recommendation would be to face it, move slowly, and admire its slender outline moving through the water, before it disappears into the deep. HM Maritime and Coastguard Agency said there were no confirmed sightings of any sharks at Cleveleys on Wednesday, or on August 28 in Blackpool. They said advice for members of the public on what to do if they see one was a matter for the local authorities. Story Lancs Live.

I live in Aberdeen and worked in the oil industry for almost 30 years. Most of my work was in the North Sea. My 3rd or 4rth last trip offshore was on the North Alwyne Platform, which has long bridge between the Gas and the drilling platform. The guys thought they saw a Pod of Dolphins. I could tell even from a long distance they were Orcas. I was proved right when they came right next to the rig. It was a wonderful sight and the first time in all those years i had seen Killer whales. I have been to more exotic places where i have saw incredible Fish and Sharks. West Africa was awesome baracuda and Tuna mainly. East Timor where the whole Platform was surrounded by Bronze Whalers. There was a set of stairs you could go down to the water and practically touch them as they swam by. The conundrum down there was if the platform went on fire, your choice would be burn to death or eaten by Sharks. Bronze whalers are known to be Man eaters.I would say the best thing i have ever saw was South of Cork in Ireland. They have 2 Gas Platforms down there and one Sunny day a Sperm Whale was swimming round the rig. That really was truly a sight to behold. Subbed you man. Love Sharks and other animals.

Orcas seen on the West Side of the Isle of Mull last week, also I've been researching into porbeagle sharks, I've got a few marks that I'm going to try around the Isle of Mull, will let you no if I catch anything.

We have boat loads of great whites off the east coast in Canada in summer and fall

My one concern is people chumming the water. It's better not to attract something like a GWS 😊
@MsJon522 жыл бұрын
as yet I have not heard anyone mention the isles of scilly for great whites?? thirty miles south of cornwall, I would have thought would be a prime place to search, plenty of species of fish visit during some years so why not the great white, just a thought.
@AirbornePirates2 жыл бұрын
Great idea Jon! I’d love to visit the Scilly islands

I dont have any doubts that GW's inhabit British waters seasonally. Food sources are somewhat more limited but the GW's first two food choices - Tuna and seals- ar present. GWs are common in summer in North America as far as BC and Nova Scotia, and in Asia the Northernmost Sea of Japan into Russian waters. I think that, across the board over harveting in the 19th and 20th centuries probably drove them away but as long as the fisheries continue to recover so will the shark pop's

Hey man I visited the Isle of Man recently. Nice place. I was convinced I seen a whale or large marine mammal moving in the water and got some video but could be anything from the footage although happy to send on. Let me know.

I live in Florida panhandle, Gulf of Mexico and already great whites have been spotted, filmed and pinged in our waters. The Gulf of Mexico is too warm for great whites but come here from time to time. I wonder how they tolerate the warm water here. I’ve always been fascinated with great whites and their presence in British waters. I wonder why they are not frequent there.

When working on a fishing boat my first (and only)sighting of a whale was just outside Peel harbour in the I.O.M. Told my Dad about it and he would not believe me. Need to get back there because it’s a brilliant place for a break.
@AirbornePirates2 жыл бұрын
Used to be a fair bit of basking shark activity off Peel, still is occasionally. Could it have been one? It’s the right side of the coast for orca in my opinion too
@ravendark24222 жыл бұрын
@@AirbornePirates Nope, definitely a whale, probably minke due to the small dorsal fin.

Also it is a good spot for Orca as they’ve been caught on camera by fishermen from Portavogie, Northern Ireland.

OK....so...it'sabout two months away from being the 100 year anniversary of the 1922 fatal unprovoked hornseashark attack on a bather . Also freaky enough is that 1922 was the coldest summer on record for the UK. Well its 2022 and this has got to be the coldest summer I've ever felt in the UK. Maybe you should visit Hornsea on the exact date and time in happened exactly 100 years ago. It's the only chance you'll get
@jamesyoung26562 жыл бұрын
Sorry, to be more precise 1922 was the coldest summer of the century on record up till then, so coldest in 22 years to that summer. According to my research on the weather back then. I might be wrong and I'm not claiming to be an expert. Good luck with your boating ventures and the covert underwater filming with the robot seal. Stay safe 🙏 If there are Great Whites in our waters. I 🙏 you are the first person to film it. Peace ✌

I read about that attack. At the time it was attributed to a dogfish. Apparently the victim was bitten twice and his body was recovered at low tide, having bled out. I don't think the body had been eaten but I understand the inquest records etc were sent to the British Library.

EDNA technology should give a definite indication of whether white sharks are present around UK seal colonies - assuming the labs have sequenced samples of DNA from various shark species on their database. All it should take is a water sample and a university willing to run the tests.
