Isle of Man Ep 13 Premier Inn, Douglas then Castletown

After our second peaceful night in Peel we decide to pamper ourselves and ease the pain from Carol’s injury with a night at Premier Inn in Douglas.
Due to no food delivery at the hotel we eat out at a pizza and pasta restaurant.
The next morning we start the day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel before exploring Douglas town centre.
Then it’s time to explore the south of the island so we head to Castletown and first of all park by the beach to relax with a cup of tea.
On driving into the town we discover the castle is closed so we continue looking for somewhere to spend the night, leading to a hair-raising drive along a narrow track!

The oversized lamp posts are actually vents for sewage tanks. They are used in several parts of the Island. (you can see a vent at the top).

I took up watching u tube videos when I returned from Australia (visa ran out in March!) and stepped into lockdown. As an avid traveller I subscribed to loads of van life videos and watched their travels but as time has gone on I have un-subscribed to all but yours. Others seem to be dashcam dashcam with no variety , just the males of the partnerships doing all the driving (therefore boring dashcam video because they do all the filming as well) and ill informed commentary of where they actually are unless it a certified campsite then of course you have to have the tour to see toilet blocks etc etc. Your videos are great! You tell a story of your travels and you take us all along with you. You share the videoing, the commentary , great information about the areas you travel to and o! course your food! Your views are going up and I think this a reflection of the effort you both put into your videos to include us in your journeys. Please keeps up the great work, it is appreciated. You are on a winning formula

Our van would be no good for your hubby at 6’4. I am 5’10 and my feet hang over the end of the bed when sleeping. Next size up is what you would need. 👍. Good idea to hire first

OMG- when you went down the track to the Visitors' Center , I was screaming, "No!" I have never seen that Center open either so don't feel too bad. Yes, that is an area of quarries and is still in use. Btw, close to where the cottages were being done up a murder took place a few years ago ( a crime of passion!).... not that common on the Island so made all the papers. In pre- Covid times they did a scary evening Ghost tour of Castletown. The Castle, itself, is quite amazing and well worth a visit but not if you have mobility issues as there are lots of narrow steps. Another thoroughly enjoyable video, Ken and Carol.

Hi Ken and Carol the large lamp post's are not just lamp post they are in fact breather pipes for the sewage holding tanks in the sewage infastructure, all of which is pumped to a treatment plants around the island... you might have seen them in Douglas and all the towns around the island. Great videos of the island, you stayed at the Premier inn which is right in front of the site of the first home of Sir William Hillary (now the site of Hillary House and South Douglas Old Friends is in what was his front garden back in the first part of the 1800's. Another super video! Catching up on our favorite English couple after a long 5000 mile journey partly inspired by your travels! We travel in a 1999 Pleasure Way, so we have a bit more room than you...but we do enjoy traveling just like the both of you. Hope carol is feeling better my beloved Castletown if you passed the estate coming in to Castletown from the airport was were we lived Janet's corner and were you were driving to the promenade the lil shops on the right used to be a Minnie supermarket used to call in on our way home from school Victoria road I used to love the smell of the brewery when it was there could smell it all over depending on the wind direction there was a boating lake by the school or not far from it spent most of our time on it loved it and we spent our summers on the beach as we weren't far from it we used to play by the small Ruins by kings William's that lil building on the left corner of the castle was a police station I remember the square very well thank you so much been watting to see Castletown nothing changed much since we left 78 79 take me back thank you for the wonderful childhood memory's it's like I never left lol xx🌹💜🌹💜🌹💜🌹xx

Yes we have a shortage of HGV drivers. Partly due to businesses exploiting Polish workers with low wages which priced out our own people, also disgusting employment conditions for drivers making the job stressful and finally our driver licensing office having a backlog of 54,000 applications from our own people they have failed to process. Wages are soaring over here now for all service jobs.

I honestly don't know where you put all that food. Pizzas and pasta in the evening and a fry up the following morning. It did look delicious though. Have never been to the IoM and probably never will, but it looks an interesting place.

Love Carols reaction to seeing the bath ! I can relate to that ! Another query, I heard you mention your van holds 37 litres ? I’m sure when I filled mine up recent,y with petrol it took about 50 litres ? Are the diesel tanks smaller ? I got a shock when had to pay tho , over £70 ! :(

I think the diesel tank capacity is 55l. I probably meant we had put 37 litres in to fill it up ☺️

@@VanVenturesUK Yes I tried that but it just takes too much space. I recommend rendering and uploading in 4K though as the quality on youtube is so much better. There are lots of people filming in 1080 but uploading a 4K file. 👍

Hi there very restful video. Hays travel took over the Thomas Cook ‘shops’ when it went into liquidation in 2019. That tiny unmade road reminded me of a holiday to Gozo when my husband drove our hire car along a road which although wider than yours didn’t appear to go anywhere but the map indicated it was a short cut so along it we went. Our girls in the back weren’t happy but it did take us where we wanted to go, just a bit ‘hairy’. 🧶🌈🍓
