It's been 365 days since I last left the Isle of Man, my tiny home island in the middle of the Irish Sea. In this video I explore the impact of the last virus filled turd of a year on my lanscape photography and shine a spot light on why this turbulent period has allowed me to really come to adore my home island so much. I additionally reveal details about the conclusion of the biggest photography project I've ever undertaken and probably ever will! 10 months of hard work finished...Watch to find out more. Thanks very much for watching and thanks in advance for your support :-)

James, wonderful images. I sometimes think people think shots are wonderful or great because they are shot in some “wonderful, far away place” rather than just forgetting the “where” and let the image stand alone on its own merits....

Great video and great thoughts on these popular destinations. I HAVE to go to Iceland, and maybe Patagonia, but you bring some pause for my long wish list. I think you live in a fantastic location, I wish there were some coastlines closer to me. Glad to see you’re not taking it for granted and I will definitely keep your book in mind for a trip to the Isle. One of these years I’ve been wanting to do a Uk-Scotland-Ireland trip, might as well include this too!!

Well done James, congratulations in writing your first book, it should sell well since there is nothing out there. From your videos and images over the years you have captured your part of the world very nicely by producing quality videos, tips and reviews and capturing - showcasing the Isle of Man at its best. Many thanks James for sharing your part of this unique world we all live in.

Thanks for the book James. It is going to be so useful. I often see your images and am too shy to ask where they are taken. I hope you can get it printed as a hard copy one day. I agree that our Island is so beautiful and what I like most is the variety we have in such a small place. No long drives or hiking for hours and hardly a soul about. We are so lucky. 👍👍👍

James, I much appreciated what you had to say in this video and no doubt being restricted to the island for a whole year will have helped you develop as a photographer. There are much worse places to be stuck and having spent several spells myself on the Isle Of Man myself several decades ago I can understand your mixed feelings about your confinement there. As with so many of life’s pursuits, we can make a little or a lot of what we have and it’s good that you have been positive and proactive about your experience. I have bought your book, thank you. Not only would I like to again see the island, and through the lens of an expert photographer, but I was moved by what you had to say. Good luck and best wishes.

Good luck with the book James. I've some of the Fotovue books and find them very useful. Until I started watching your videos after seeing you on Photography Online I'd never thought about the IoM as a photography destination. Don't know if I'll make it over but you certainly deserve an award for promoting it. maybe because I've only been a serious hobbyist for 2.5yrs I have no worries about shooting something that's commonly shot. I'm looking at photos for my personal enjoyment. Sure I look for other compositions but I'm not worried if it's not unique and then again sometimes you go to a commonly shot location and get some unique weather that sets your shot apart. lets hope we all can get to travel safely again soon - if we wish to anyway.

just got back a few days ago from IOM. Spent 6 days there but only had 3 days where I could take some pics on a whistle-stop tour around the island with my family in tow, so no real time to think about what to shoot before moving on to another location. Found some stunning locations (Niarbyl with low clouds and mist on the surrounding hills) and would love to go back and wait for the "right" conditions - no views from Snaefell, too misty until about 5mins before we had to leave on the next tram. You are lucky to have such a varied land and seascape right on your doorstep. I look forward to another visit one day.

Yes you've hit the nail on the head, look around your local area, open your eyes to what is on your doorstep. This last year has had a big impact on my photography, I now take more time and plan where and what to visit within a few miles of home. I have also traveled to all those far flung places for all the same reasons but realise that most satisfaction has come from photographing my local surroundings well. The Isle of Man could soon become one of those iconic locations judging by your sample images. Good luck with the book.

Great vid James. Our island is rather larger than the Isle of Man but even we feel a bit trapped sometimes. Sterling post, images, and photo shoot local message, James! Welcome back. Good photos are everywhere (as are bad photos) - it takes a skilled photographer to spot the good ones and create excellent compositions. Knowing your own backyard is an asset. I’ve seen quite a few London based YT photo hosts bemoan the lockdown and yearn to travel - when there’s so much to cover locally. Best of luck w/the book. Noted cat astir in background - couldn’t tell if it was Misty. (Nice haircut, BTW😁). Cheers!

Thank you James for being such an inspiration. Im no professional and by far not even close to being a usable "photographer" - but i always felt its cheap to go to well documented locations to take pictures. I can learn from those pictures others take in terms of compositional ideas but setting my camera up at the same spot will teach me nothing, because im just copying someones work. Add to that, it felt much more "fun" to just walk trough an area and "see what ill find". Are most my pictures crap or only worth something for me? Yes! But the feeling when you get a shot you are really happy with is something i wouldnt change. Ok and its much cheaper to just travel to the mountains or even just walk outside (Switzerland) and see what goes :D And its the first time i hear such a statement from a professional photographer.

@@JamesBrewphoto I have a question regarding your e-book Isle of Man, I noticed you used many different camera bodies and I was wondering why. With me, I will use a crop sensor body to get my distance on a telephoto lens but I can not understand any other reason. I am a Canon shooter and own a Canon 5D III, 5D IV and a EOS R (bought this to see if I could ever like a mirrorless camera). You are a Nikon shooter but you have a lot of bodies. You might not have all those bodies any longer but is there other reasons to use a crop sensor other than what I listed? By the way, nice e-book and loved all the info. you presented and it is a lovely little island.

@@gregs2466 The pictures in the book have been taken over a period of many years in which time I have used many different Nikon cameras. However at any one time I only have one camera that I use for my landscape shooting. Main benefit of crop sensor is: cheaper, more focal reach and increased landscape depth of field. Thanks very much for getting the book - I massively appreciate it :-)

James I have wondered where you were. I totally understand the frustration as well as your introspection regarding thinking locally. Fortunately for me being in Texas (our governor just opened us up totally much to the chagrin of the federal government) we've always been reasonably lax in how stringent any "rules" have been (common sense) so getting out and about with my camera hasn't been an issue and since I can drive for a day and not leave Texas there's not any "cabin fever." Just think of it like your time in school when money was tight and you had to study instead of play. The thing that has always attracted me to your photography is that you're a landscape photographer limited to a small area who doesn't take the "same" photograph over and over again. I got my copy. jro

I guess it is so easy to be blind at what you have on your own doorstep. I've traveled around in GB and I have seen photographics objects wherever I looked. E.g. I was photographing one of all characteristic stone walls you have all over GB and someone asked me why photographing them. They are all over the place he told me but for me it is much more than just a stone wall. The form, the patina of the old stones. I am also thinking of man hours and bent backs and years it took to build them. In GB you have also if I´m not mentioning the obvious vistas, your old stone houses. Oozing of character. In Sweden the most old houses are build with wood.

Absolutely agree - the old stone house ruins we have here are amazing! I never tire of shooting them!

How beautiful ! I plan to come to "The Rock", when international travel is allowed. After my business is done, I want to explore your gorgeous island. I would like to buy your book. May I ask where to purchase it? Thank you for a most pleasant journey through your video. Sincerely and Respectfully Jo (USA)

That has made my day, if not my year. So positive. I knew something was missing from my life and it's your videos! I don't know if I'll be able to visit the island, but it's going on the list! I live in the Peak District and it's nigh on impossible to take a photo that hasn't been taken before. I'm going to keep on trying though!

I’ve been thinking the same James, the past joy of travelling to far flung places for photography has been losing its appeal more and more over the last 12 months. In Ireland we are restricted to 5km of our home, so at this stage I’d be happy with 10km 🤣🤣. Well done on the book, I’ll definitely be looking into this and hopefully take the short trip to visit the IOM. Your photos definitely make it a tempting place to visit, they are beautiful. It’s funny how UK and Irish residents often fly or sail between the two but ignore what’s in the middle.
@JamesBrewphoto
@JamesBrewphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Claire! Very good point on ignoring whats in the middle. In many ways I think the fact it is overlooked is its strength. It's most definately a nice little island that has a lot to offer and would certainly give you photo opportunities a bit different to the norm 🙂

Brilliant vid.. Question - Are you going to try to get the book as a hard cover or paperback?
@JamesBrewphoto

Thanks - I would love to do a hard copy but the cost is a big barrier. I'd probably need some level of financial assistance from the government here to make it happen. Maybe worth a tree though - it is something I am considering 👍

Hi James: Congratulations on accomplishing the completion of this book. I hope that you have great success with this endeavour. You are very fortunate to have such a lovely location albeit relatively small in size. I live in central Canada and while large in nature we haven't been able to travel around too much due to Covid-19. We are coming to Skye in the fall, but we won't have an opportunity to come to Mull this time around but I am sure we will be back. We are working Skye Photo and specifically Harry when we come over in the fall. Your images are amazing and you are doing a great thing in promoting tourism to the Isle of Man. Just curious, what is your F/T occupation? Cheers, Keith (Canada)

Thanks very much Keith - You will have a great time on Skye. That island is seriously amazing and you will be guided by some excellent photographers up there too. My full time job is in marketing for a local charity

Hi James: We are really looking forward to seeing Skye. We have three sessions booked with Harry Martin so it should be incredible. My daughter-in-law is the head of HR for Deaf & Blind Ontario so we know what type of special person it takes to be involved in these worthwhile organization. You are a special person for this work. Fantastic luck with the book. If I have plans to come to 'the Rock' I'll definitely get a copy. Its not a bad place to get 'stuck'. I think you got lucky being able to effectively close your borders. Its been a whole year since I've seen the sea. Hopefully a trip to the coast this summer, its less than an hour away, but crosses county lines, I'll just have to put up with the rivers, lochs and mountains just now. Your most important point is absolutely valid. I'm not really interested in another photographer's camera settings, they're only relevant to that moment in time. I'm more interested in how many air miles are in the photo. Your world travel vlogs were never as good as your local ones, sorry, they felt like you just ticking a box off on the tourist trail. Patagonia can wait, I've got too many hidden gems to shoot here first and still be home for tea, and feed the cat :-)

Recently discovered the channel and I really like your content. I also bought the book. I wouldn't mind buying photography stuff at a store that gives you a commission, but does it have to be Amazon? Out of principle I don't buy there; after a few years there will be only Amazon to buy from.

You missed out the best part of the island sadly departed Norman Wisdom. In NYC I have seen people queuing up to take "that" Instagram photo.just madness in my mind I want something different to show for my effort. All the very best with the book it sounds more a work from the heart than for the profit.
