While I think Open Arms is the better choice (as it moves the plot along), Ismarus/Your Light makes Polites seem more like a character rather than just a plot device. In Ismarus/Your Light, he seems more like a warrior who has more a positive outlook on life and still fought a 10 year long war. While he doesn’t want a raid, he still understands why it needs to happen, but still wants a more pacifist approach. Open Arms Polites seems more naive as he wants to avoid a raid altogether and is too trusting, and doesn’t really seem like a grizzled war veteran.

@@leonglitch I agree. The previous version of Polites was part of the first draft which likely would have delved into different themes than the ones we have now. I suppose I was just pointing out that the first version of Polites felt slightly more fleshed out personality wise to me personally.

It fits with the line from Ruthlessness "The line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible" so I think Open Arms is better for the story because it makes that line make more sense.

Eeeyep. Not to mention how often Telemachus references wanting to bring/spread light, or how Athena refers to the events leading to her split for Ody as "his light went dark" - she broke from him immediately after Polites' death. I actually have a theory, based on the fact that "never once has he cheated on his wife" but also the fact that he and Polites seem to be more than just friends (and, yk, ancient Greece) that there was a polaymory situation going on there. Penelope said goodbye to her husband knowing full well that he would potentially be at war for years and knowing that he would need someone to help get him through it and back to her, and gave her wholehearted blessing to him and Polites. I even have this mental clip of her calling Polites Ody's light, and bidding him guide her husband through war with light and love, and then to guide him home. Polites being important to Penelope would also explain why Telemachus grows up with a lot of his attitudes and themes, too, because Polites is a part of them. A friend of mine takes it a step further and theorises that if they were a throuple, Telemachus might actually be biologically Polites son, hence the similarities. I'm not sure I'm into that one, but it's a fun theory none the less.

What i really like about this is the "i keep thinking of the infant from that night" and how here polites is here to reassure odysseyus, while in the underworld saga we have a similar moment but instead of reassurance its the haunting memory of polites, and how much odysseyus' guilt weighs on him

Actually, it doesn’t have to be a prequel to open arms. In fact, I think it can take place directly after warrior of the mind since after Odysseus is been reminded that he’s supposed to be this warrior by Aida. I think he gets serious and Polites noticed and then Your Light starts playing
