ISMAT CHUGTAI || Old Rare Interview || Anmol Ratan Tv Serial (1990)

Ismat Chughtai (August 1915 - 24 October 1991) was an eminent Indian writer in Urdu, known for her indomitable spirit and a fierce feminist ideology.
Considered the grand dame of Urdu fiction, Chughtai was one of the Muslim writers who stayed in India after the subcontinent was partitioned. Along with Rashid Jahan, Wajeda Tabassum and Qurratulain Hyder, Ismat's work stands for the birth of a revolutionary feminist politics and aesthetics in twentieth century Urdu literature. She explored feminine sexuality, middle-class gentility, and other evolving conflicts in modern India.
Her outspoken and controversial style of writing made her the passionate voice for the unheard, and she has become an inspiration for the younger generation of writers, readers and intellectuals.

I had expected to see an interview here of the great Ismat Chughtai. What I got in the bargain instead was the usual immature bollywood dramatization of her life. I knew Ismat in the 1960s and 70s , almost as a family member. I have a 50 page essay in Urdu (soon to be published) on my recollections of her from those times. It is a shame that there is no proper video interview of her from the 50s and 60s when she was at the peak of her powers. She had a mesmerizing presence and spoke with the same power and eloquence which she employed when writing her short stories and novels. Maybe I should translate my essay on her into English so that those who no longer know how to read and write Urdu can have a glimpse of the Ismat I knew.

The movie is so inaccurate, especially how they portrayed her sick brother! He was the opposite, he didn't break nor was he pitiful. He was described as hell bound because of his personality. He suffered a lot but he never shed a tear, instead he smiled in the face of all diseases! While ismat mam did pity him as human but not as a sister! She hated him like his whole family did.

The Last Prophet (P.b.u.h) was going to tell the relaity of this world vs thecreality aftercdeath and he said that All the people in this world are sleeping.. Upon this statement, many people asked him (p.b.u.h) that how are we all sleeping. He said that when they all die, they will awake in the Ultimate reality. He gave example of how people think that the dream or nightmare is the only reality when they are asleep. But when the nightmare or dream ends and they wake up, they realize that it was just a dream or nightmare. Similarly he told that when people die and are out of their bodies, and in their exclusively spiritual form, then they will realize that the life on the earth, inside the body, was just a dream where they had choices based on limited consciousness, sub-consciousness and unconsciousness.
