Isn't FLOSSING just SNAGGING??

How do you catch a fish that doesn't bite? You put the hook in its mouth...duh. "Flossing" is a technique of targeting the mouth of running salmon so that they can be fairly caught and ethically released if desired. Some people simplify it to "snagging" but it is not.

Thousands of people in Washington state. It’s sad. The odd year pink run this year had a thousand or more people lined up at Pyuallup River flossing salmon accept their method gets foul hooks a lot of the time. But there are people that go and catch and release 30-60 fish a day there. You can’t even do any type of legitimate fishing without getting bitched at by the flossers.

It's fun to catch fish. You want to keep and clean every fish you catch? What difference does it make if they actually bite to eat or you floss? I think it's pretty well established they don't bite to eat when they come up river to spawn. They my strike because they are annoyed but like I said what does it really matter? Why don't you keep every bass you catch? The method of catching the fish doesn't really matter as long as it's in the mouth.

Here in Alaska, flossing and snagging are legally differentiated. Flossing/snagging is contradictory nonsense in a legal sense here.

Salmon on the kenai river don’t feed or bite. The swim upstream to return to their spawning grounds. It’s not about “can’t catch fish”. You need to be more knowledgeable on fishing before being a keyboard warrior.

These salmon don’t actually “bite” as they start to travel up the rivers and streams so the only way to actually catch them is to snag them but once they get in the rivers the idea is to snag them in the mouth as the swim up with there mouths open

Sure thing, Donna. The Flossing technique is a staple of salmon fishing in Alaska. Especially for Sockeye, since they don't feed in the fresh water. Snagging is only legal in very specific situation in Alaska, like this one. Never caught a paddlefish. That is cool!

People will say I’m flossing with corky and yarn, sometimes.. on accident. But 75% of my fish they swallowed the corky and hook. Occasionally get them on the outside of the mouth. Shorter leader=less flossed fish and more real bites

The rules here at the Salmon River in New York State say that any foul hooked fish, which is anywhere outside the mouth or lips, has to be released immediately after being landed. The problem, though is most of the salmon that are spawning are no longer feeding, but rather merely swimming up river with their mouth open. So how else can you catch them other than trying to get your lure hook to his mouth?

A real fisherman is aiming to entice an instinctual bite from the returning salmon. I.e they will eat other salmon’s eggs to give their own offspring a better chance at survival. They will strike at spoons and spinners to defend their spawning area. They will strike at twitching jigs out of memory of what their main diet is in the ocean - shrimp and squid. A real fisherman does more work to understand the fish they are targeting than simply throw a hook in its path.

@@Lucas-su7um No it's not flossing is flossing the line through a Salmons mouth leading to a hook set result no different than using a lure. Snagging is when you yank your hook through a school of salmon until you snag one anywhere on the body. You're more likely to foul hook a salmon using a twitching jig in shallow water.

@@robbarber7253 flossing is yanking a hook into there mouth it’s pretty much the same as snagging but instead it’s yanking it on their bodies and no using lures isn’t the same I fish with spinners and spoons and twitching jigs on many different rivers some are crystal clear so the fish rarely bite but when they do bite they chase my lure and absolutely destroy it in front of my eyes so you can’t tell me that salmon won’t bite in the rivers they bite out of aggression so educate your self and stop making bad excuses to say it’s ok to floss when you end up snagging a lot of fish by accident

always check local regs before you try something you see online basically. in 3rd world countries they have no regulations. in america each area has regulations of their own. the penalties for not sticking to regulations are steep also in america. so just because you can do something in alaska doesnt mean you can do it in every state.

Washington State here. There are several rivers in my state where the flossing technique is used and legal as long as fish is hooked in the mouth. Sometimes they will not be hooked in the mouth. These are considered snagged fish and are released by reputable fishermen. Usually there are plenty of other fishermen watching. The use of this flossing technique is perfectly legal in multiple states. Flossing is used in specific areas and times of year because the Salmon are not feeding nor are they aggressive enough to bite because they will not get agroed. If you don't live in an area where this type of fishing is practiced do not assume it is wrong. Flossing is definitely not the same as snagging.

On any day but today I would agree with you, as I just saw a video earlier about a guy that catches sockeye with a bobber and bait.
