In an interview Gaga said Rain is a metaphor for tears and alcohol. It’s about her struggling with always turning to alcohol to cope. The line is “I’d rather be dry, but at least I’m alive,” she’s basically saying “I’d rather be sober but at least I’m not dead.” Or alternatively, “id rather not be in tears, but at least I’m still alive.”

The album has songs that have more so depressing/sad lyrics that are paired with more so happy/fun dance music. To kinda dance through the pain. This song specifically is about both of their pain (Ariana Grande going through her trauma after the bombing at her concert, Mac Miller’s death, etc) & Gaga with her depression and many other troubles. And then basically letting the rain happen and letting it happen because they can handle it all and make it through it.

the whole album is a concept album, which we dont see often in pop music. In fact its very very deep and has a very clear purpose. Rain on me is one of my favs because it talks about pain, tears and addictions by embracing them as part of life. A life that we finally enjoy as we dance through the pain and we become stronger. And the genius about gaga is that like you, the first times you listen to the songs they are nice and catchy pop songs. But real magic starts when you actually notice the lyrics and you start dancing with them. Maybe while crying. Thats why I love gaga and I loved this album.

thank you for what you said about people who love music. I don't think people realize there's a difference between liking what you like a lot and liking music.
