I wish every single bug I have ever seen to have been of equivalent or greater size to myself so I could give them all a big hug. 🧡 But if you don't like bugs generally, that enjoyment of isopods might be because they're actually not what many of us often think of as bugs! They're a type of terrestrial crustacean, and they even bear gills on their pleopods- so a more apt comparison might be to a shrimp or a lobster than a cricket or beetle. => _(U can still call them bugs if u want tho, it's a pretty informal term. =v)_

I can't be the only person who watches isopod tours and spends the whole video saying "ooh look, my favourite species/morph!.... er no this one's my fave... oh hang on this one... " and ends up wanting ALL the pods ;-)

@@themadaquarist I'm just starting out and already have some of my faves - Magic Potion, Montenegro... But the one I have a special soft spot for is an individual P. scaber plain grey sow I caught on my balcony late last year. She's just had her 3rd brood :-)

I’ve tried them in other tubs and agree 100%... I believe my issue is they prefer it a bit warmer than where most of my tubs are placed currently. Thank. You kindly for your comments

Thank you so much for your videos. I’m trying to learn as much as I can. I want to start my isopod collection, I really want the zebra isopod first. You mentioned the ph levels in the bins, when it gets high it needs to reset. How do you know when it’s time to change the substrate? Do you reset the substrate every 3 or 6 months? Or do you have a meter to test the ph level? Thank you so much fo answering my question.

I’m honoured my new friend welcome. Isopods are true detritivores and their role is to break down product further on the forest floor or cave floor etc… One of the key components of a healthily natural system. However in small containers that he amount of organic waste products can build up and theoretically pollute the environment if not kept in check, mainly the acidification of the substrate. More critical I’m species that naturally inhabit alkaline environments such as limestone caves I.e: Most Cubaris species. For me every culture is different. Weekly monitoring will tell you when it’s times to change. For me is roughly annually. However I am replenishing or adding leaf litter, calcium sources throughout. The isopod playlist should give you absolutes everything you will need for success particularly I recommend the two entitled are we doing it wrong. It loses all the questions we as keepers should be asking. Take care
