The bonuses you get from non-aligned Netherlands are extremely helpful to surviving the initial German onslaught, and after that point the rest really is not too hard

Mexico and the Netherlands are the gold standard for minor nations. They are dynamic, flexible, have a whole bunch of interesting shit for you to do but also give you enough of an industry to make it happen.

@@154Kilroy It's good, but not as good as those 2. Mexico and the Netherlands will give you ways to have fun and challenge yourself no matter what you do, and plenty of strong options. Where as if you don't reform the Kingdom as Portugal you're missing out. Industrially the Baltics are also pretty decent, especially Lithuania who can literally get 0% consumer goods (0% with 100% stability on Partial Mob. or 0% without depending on stability on War Economy) but politically only Lithuania's PLC is actually strong. Bulgaria is also pretty strong and varied at the end of its focus tree but it starts so disgustingly weak that it balances out.

@@alpinecross4370 you can also form Iberia as Portugal. Not as good as merging with Brazil, but still pretty good. And the extra compliance you get from having Macau can allow you to fight China and get alot of manpower that way. Definitely agree with Lithuania though. Not forming Poland-Lithuania means you're kind of missing out though. Bulgaria is ok, I actually prefer Greece, but I know alot of people don't. The Netherlands is one of my favorite countries to play, so no arguments there. I have bad luck with Mexico though, I think I've only had one successful game. Things just never go to plan. I understand the mechanics and everything, its not that. There's a few countries like that for me, Turkey is another. Brazil, Siam, Peru, and Sweden will all be a lot of fun when they get trees I suspect. Iran too.

Just had a thought: There's a secret path in the new Italian focus tree (By Blood Alone) to become the Papal State with the pope as your leader, create the Catholic Dominion faction, and declare wars upon the major non-Catholic nations (USSR = E.Orthodox + state atheism; Sweden = Lutheran; etc.)... There's a not-secret path in the Mexican focus tree (Man the Guns) to become a Catholic Democratic or Catholic Nationalist state. The pope branch of Italy and the Catholic branch(es) of Mexico should have some interaction, so Catholic Mexico can join the Catholic Dominion, and the faction can declare war on the Protestant Powers of the North (primarily Protestant states inc. USA, UK, Sweden, non-NSDAP Germany, etc.), or the state atheists (NSDAP Germany, USSR, PR China, etc.), and possibly any Oriental Orthodox Bloc (non-Communist Russia, independent Armenia and/or Georgia, western Ethiopia, etc). The should make an fun multiplayer game, or non-Ironman single-player campaign.
