I 100% relate to him not being wealthy when he went to New Zealand. I was born in Africa, mom a nurse and dad was a doctor. My dad had a high paying job, we too had a maid at one point. We left Africa due to political unrest. When we got here my mom was able to work but the government were being stubborn about my dad’s medical license. They essentially were asking him to do another 8 years of medical training. It caused strain on my parents relationship, dad ended up moving back as he didn’t want to start over. Mom was earning 3.86 an hour so we lived out of one room in a shared house. I would be upset if someone in a more privileged position told me I was the privileged one because at one point I had a maid in Africa. You can’t discredit someone’s hardships because they were relatively well off at one point in their life.
