To answer this, we need to go back to the beginning of the colonies. We all know that some of the early Americans fled England to escape religious persecution. This is true enough, but England did have an officially endorsed religion: Anglicanism, or the Church of England. Most estimates say at least 80% of England at least pretended to be Anglican and Anglicans quickly became a large presence in colonial society. The English Civil War broke out in the 1640s and '50s. This had two effects. First, many Anglican gentlemen and nobles fled to the colonies, especially the slaveholding colonies where they could buy slaves and estates. These estates, along with the relative power of the Anglican Church there, allowed them to live as they had despite a Puritan England. Secondly, after Puritanism fell in the Restoration, most of the colonies passed acts for religious toleration. However, nowhere had universal religious toleration until Pennsylvania was formed. There was only one group that was tolerated everywhere: Anglicans. Catholics were allowed in Maryland but not in Massachusetts, for example. Likewise, most royal officials would be Anglican and the English government, from time to time, supported Anglicanism in the colonies. This was sometimes resisted, most notably under the reign of King James II (who was a Catholic and unpopular and, fun fact, the namesake of New York). Nevertheless, on the eve of the Revolution Anglicanism was a robust force in the colonies. It was the richest church, probably the most populous, and had the most state support, both from several local state governments in the south and from England. But the Anglican Church in the US was loosely under the Bishop of London and held as one of its tenets that the King was the head of the church. Naturally enough, the Church was overwhelmingly loyalist. Only about 27% of the church structure were patriots, though this was much higher in some parts of the South. The Continental Congress criminalized praying for the King or Parliament in 1776 which resulted in almost every northern Anglican church shutting its door. After the Revolution, the Church was disestablished, much of its land seized, subject to fines, and individual clergy were investigated. Between 70% and 97% of Anglican clergy were expelled or fled, depending on the colony. By some reports, there were only two Anglican priests in the whole of New England after the Revolution. Those who remained radically reformed the church to have more democratic structures and a more American structure. They revised the Book of Common Prayer and attempted to strengthen what churches remained. But their congregation's numbers were devastated by the Revolution, as was their influence. By 1790, no state officially supported Episcopalianism or Anglicanism anymore. But it remained the religion of the elite, especially the Southern elite. The Church had been relatively more patriot in the South, it had definitely been more integrated into local society, and the South was a more elite dominated society. There was also less tradition of religious dissent and a longer tradition of conformism. Likewise, the First Great Awakening had been more a Northern than Southern phenomena, especially in the cities and coasts. Where it did find hold in the South, it was often in more marginal populations, like rural whites (such as those in Appalachia) or slave communities. The same was true of the Second and Third Great Awakenings, though these were more present in the south. Notably, these awakenings often stressed social equality and opposition to slavery, which made them unappealing to slaveholding elites. So while it declined in general, it remained strong in the South, especially along the coasts and in major slaveholding regions. (It was also still an elite religion in the North, but Northern elites were less dominant overall and were mostly not slaveholders.)

I figure in the case of the Founders who became president, its because they had been British and that was the official church. As for the later presidents, that is a good question.

Loving each other and forgiveness is mostly what Jesus and the New Testament were all about. Many so called Christians seem to follow the God of the Old Testament instead- with the anger, fear and punishment. Which sort of negates the whole point of Jesus and the story of his crucifixion. Contrast Carter (whose worse known sin was that he found women attractive even when they were not his wife) to Trump who (while claiming that no one on Earth is a bigger Christian than he) said he has never asked God's forgiveness because he doesn't believe he's ever done anything the slightest bit wrong in his lifetime. @hr zr “weird sects” could be read as a little bit condescending, though I have no reason to believe you meant it that way. Just like in Europe, there is a lot of diversity within American Protestantism, and the American Protestant denominations are deeply interwoven in history with European ones. The Episcopals talked about in this video are basically the Church of England, but post-revolutionary war. The Presbyterians are calvinists that descend from the Church of Scotland. Methodists are intricately linked with the Methodists of Britain. Baptists, Pentecostals, and many others are largely from the first and second great awakenings, movements in the US that reinvigorated religious fervor with new branches of Protestantism that largely appealed to lower classes.

I really enjoyed this video! I have a few comments/concerns: -I think we can conclude from his speeches (including the one you quote, as well as the famous second inaugural address and others) that Lincoln believed in God, and had, at the least, a Christian understanding of God. (The often-cited “a house divided against itself” quote comes, as you probably know, from the Gospel of Mark.) -On the other hand, I’m surprised that Eisenhower had any strong religious belief; he famously said that America needed a strong moral source, and that he didn’t care what it was. (That’s Billy Graham at 21:10) -I would argue that there were a number of politicians who were never President, but whose religion-based activism had a greater effect on American political and social life than many presidents did. Among them are Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr., and William Jennings Bryan.

Worth pointing out that the big concern for separation of church and state in the early years of America and elsewhere was less about protecting the state from the church, and more about protecting the church from the state, with people like Jefferson seeing politics as a corruptive influence on religion as much or more than the other way around. They were particularly thinking of what they saw in Europe as the churches essentially being arms of the government as much as anything else, and they generally favoured putting limits on the power of governments.

Fantastic video. Thanks for putting it together. Interesting facts about the two Quaker presidents, Hoover and Nixon: Herbert Hoover’s wife, the former Miss Lou Henry, was an Episcopalian who decided to become a Quaker when she married Mr. Hoover. Their wedding was performed, however, by Fr. Ramon Mestres, a Roman Catholic priest acting solely in a civil capacity. According to our high school Spanish teacher, who was a Quaker, Richard Nixon was “read out of meeting” (excommunicated) when he joined the U.S. Navy during the Second World War.

I'm not even american, but I really found this video interesting! My POV is that being a religious president is not so important, but respecting every religion and religious people in the country is something extremely important. If a president is religious then bringing his best religious values can make a good difference for the people in general.
@jasonstevenson40673 жыл бұрын
I would say it does matter, and I speak from experience. I will only vote for a president that has policies that i agree with. No Athiest, jehovah's witness, catholic, or Methodist, will hold to all of the policies that I hold to, so i would not vote for them. However there is an exception. A lot of politicians pretend to be religious for the benefit of their viewers. So I can put up with voting for someone who is one of the religions I mentioned, if they do hold to my policies. It's just that I dont see them as following the religion they say they are.

In the US, church attendance isn’t really a good measure for if a person is religious or not. Many people are non-denominational and follow the doctrine that where two or more gather in the lords name, he shall also be there. I consider myself very religious and I haven’t been to church for a few months. Also there would be a lot less denominations if people would actually read the Bible and understand what they’re reading.

@@fordprefect5967 in the right context any religion will look like a cult. They've gone through several reforms over the decades but they are for the most part evangelicals with a side of eschatology. Doctrine inside the organization (they will never refer to themselves as a church) prioritizes ministry and self-actualization in regards to worship. Their interpretation of the Bible is as an absolute though an individual's views on scripture and the extent to which it must be followed to the letter varies considerably. One of the most bizarre and hurtful practices within the group though is disfellowshipping. If a member of a congregation is caught out in some sort of wrongdoing be it of a secular or a religious nature they'll get several sessions with congregation elders and depending on whether they are repentant or not the matter will be either dropped, they will be announced as reproved, or they are announced as disfellowshipped. In short they are totally shunned both in and out of service, disallowed from commenting during Q&A sessions, denied ministry service of all description, and they won't even TALK to you until you show your repentance. Not really the best way to get the lost lambs back on the path.

I grew up Quaker before gravitating towards the Orthodox church. Modern Quaker culture is still very different from what I'd say mainstream Protestant culture is like in a lot of ways in terms of the socioeconomic habits that are followed and the level of mystical, spiritual practices that are genuinely believed in. I've sometimes felt like I've had more in common in terms of how my family system works with the kids of immigrants from Europe than other Americans. Old Quaker families are very clanish, try to force their kids to be academically oriented at all costs, vehemently pacifist, emphasize diligence, and are way less likely to jive with 'suburban' culture. The system in which I was raised was definitely not an average one, but I'm still glad I grew up in a Quaker household, I feel like it has inoculated me against materialism and consumerism pretty effectively.

Please remember that there are three types of Quakers (Friends): Guernyite, Wilberite and Hicksite. (Please pardon any misspellings.) Although those names are rarely used today, the Guernyites are now referred to as "Evangelical Friends" and have actual churches, ministers, et cetera. The Hicksites are now referred to as "Liberal/Progressive Quakers/Friends and practice traditional Quaker 'rituals', such as silent meeting, et cetera, yet are very liberal theologically, many considering themselves "Post-Christian" or even "Non-Christian". They are very socially active, in true Quaker tradition. The Wilberites are few in number and are the "Orthodox", practicing silent meeting and all other traditional Quaker/Friend practices and 'rituals', sometimes including the wearing of 'plain' clothing and even using some archaic words such as "thee" and "thou" in their speech, from what I understand.
