A couple of days ago the Bene Israeli community aka the Marathi Jews celebrated our lovely Indian culture through a show organized by Noah Nagavkar. The event was sold out! We had members of the community give us a wonderful stage performance. It was like we were in INDIA ❣️

Very happy to see most of them still seemed connected to Marathi language. Being Indian doesn't always mean being Marathi just like being Indian doesn't mean being only hindi despite what some may think about it. Similarly, Indian Jews aren't all Marathi, there are Malayali & Telugu Jews also. Therefore I would've loved to know what they thought & felt about Maharashtra since they're Marathi Jews living outside Maharashtra in Israel for decades now & some younger generations probably have never even visited Maharashtra. I hope Marathi Jews maintain a connection with Maharashtra & Marathi passing it on to their children also just like Russian speaking & Yiddish speaking jews apparently do. Jay Maharashtra 🙏😊

Revital, adding to my comment , I want to write a very personal anecdote. I must have been in 11th Std. One day we received a call on our landline phone. My Father received it and started talking nicely with someone. Later on, he handed over d receiver to me and asked me to speak. When I took over, der came a soft voice in fluent Marathi of an old lady. We chatted for a long time. Later my Baba told me that she is a Jewish lady staying alone in Malad. Her Sister had migrated to Israel. He was addressing her as Jew Aaji. She was an old acquaintance of my Father. Then in between she used to call us frequently and ask abt me. One year must have passed on since this incident. One day, when my father called Jew Aaji, she did not recognize his voice completely, so he gave the receiver to me and I started speaking to her. To my utter shock, she didn't even recognize my voice. I was repeatedly telling her...Aaji I m Salony, we used to speak regularly. But she was hesitant to talk to me and disconnected call. Now, after so many years, last year, during this time, when I watched ur videos and u speaking abt Marathi Jews, I instantly remembered my Jew Aaji. I still don't know her whereabouts, she never contacted us since then...but ur videos always brings back nostalgia. I stay in Thane and am origially from Pen. I feel so connected watching all ur videos. Hats off to your work and dedication.
