Nearly 50 years ago, during my 1st extended visit to Israel (as a teenager) I asked my Israeli relatives whether they teach Arabic in the schools. They said, Not much. Coming from a Canadian province with 2 languages, I understand the importance of learning the “other” language. It bridges cultural gaps, makes “the other” less of a stranger, lets us navigate in all neighborhoods, etc. So I was shocked by my cousin’s response. Back then, as a young person who knew the security challenges in Israel, I figured it was at least useful to know good Arabic, if only to possibly overhear conversations plotting a terror attack. But as a more mature person now, I know that learning the language of others in your country shows respect and can only lead to good things.

Lol, a lot of the Gazan and WB Arabic is a patchwork version of Arabic and Hebrew. Over 20% of Israelis speak Arabic, that's a large number considering that only 12.5% of Americans speak Spanish, and 22.8% of Canadians speak French.

@@brianhalps Over 20% of Israelis speak Arabic? Maybe if you include the 20% arab citizens of Israel...Jewish Israelis rarely know basic Arabic unfortunately. It would have made a huge difference if we knew Arabic and respected the culture behind it.

I lived there for a while. They do speak Arabic in Jerusalem and Haifa. Not as much in Tel Aviv. Sort the same as how they speak more French in Montreal than in Vancouver. Best of luck with your bs campaign

Todah rabah! Weren't there Yemenite Jews who returned to Zion in 1882? The difference between them and the Zionists who came from Eastern Europe in the 1890s was that most of the early East European Jews were secular and almost all the Yemenite Jews who walked back to Zion in 1882 were religious and traditional. I also know that Yemenite Jewish men were known for their great literacy in traditional 1st century Tiberian Hebrew. Thank you for this interview with Eliran!

Don't agree with everything he's saying. Family are allowed not agree on everything. But as he (and I) believe in the inherent part of zionism in our culture and lives. Anti semitism is anti semitism. My family too are originals through my Mother and Baghdad through Father. I too have arabic. I am united with everyone I'm united with.

All I want to know is why don’t Palestinians deserve to be free? Also, for the American supporters of Israel, why is it that Jews deserved reparations in the form of the land that Palestinians were living on yet native Americans, African Americans and even the Mexicans who were here first do not? Final question, a while back when we said that Black Lives Matter. When questioned we explained that we know that all lives matter but right now it seems like black lives don’t matter to many people. Many of you stressed that all lives matter in response. Over and over. Do you believe that all lives matter and does that include Palestinians lives?
