Before Irans attack on Saturday, Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Syria and killed an Iranian general and his staff. That's why Iran sent the 300 missiles which were almost entirely intercepted by the iron dome. You could argue that Iran sending the 300 missiles and telling the US that's what they were doing was largely a face-saving maneuver in the recent series of events which was started by Israel bombing the general in Syria which was a violation of international laws.
